  1. So here we go. I'm not quite sure how to start here. I guess a little background on me. My name is Jeff, and I live in Cleveland, OH with my wife. I have been struggling with getting fit for a while now and never seem to get the motivation to keep going. I will start a new routine, but then my resolve gives out because it is always easier to be lazy or unhealthy. The crazy part is I know the decisions I am making are unhealthy, but I choose them anyway. It doesn't help that I work at a computer software company, which means I don't get a lot of physical activity during the day while I'm at work. I sit in front of a computer all day. My wife and I recently trained for a half marathon, and I use the term "trained" very loosely in my case. I did not do my part, and the day of the race my body quit on me at mile 5 of 13. We walked the rest of the race and ended up almost dead last. I was proud that we made it, but this experience proved to me exactly how out of shape and lazy I am. That race showed me that if I don't hold myself accountable, things are not going to end well. I want to live a long and healthy life with my wife, and eventually with my children when I have them. So I decided to jump into this 6 week challenge to try and prove that I can lose weight and get in shape, but more importantly to prove to myself that I can change. I have done a lot of reading on nerd fitness to get myself started with setting goals, and have decided to start with some easier goals that will still push me. With that said, here are my goals for this challenge. Main Quest -Lose 40 LBS. (I am currently 240) Goals Do 30 minutes of physical activity a day, 5 days a week. This must be outside of the normal walking and working around the house and office I would normally do. -3 Days should be more strenuous (Body weight circuits, Run 30 minutes, etc.) -2 days will be lighter activities (walking/jogging 30 minutes) Give up pop (yes, I am from the midwest)Eat less than 2.110 calories a day (MyFitnessPal) These are my goals. For the days of activity I hope to find a variety of activities to keep me interested. I like running, but at long distance I get bored or I find it hard to motivate my self to do the run the first place (part of the reason I failed at half training). I want to find a variety of weight work outs and combine them with running throughout the week to keep myself interested. I also drink way too much pop, and have tried to limit myself in the past with little success. I find that if I limit myself I find excuses to go around that limit. If I really want to quit, I need to set the focus on quitting and not just limiting myself. Finally, I need to control how much I eat in general by staying under my MyFitnessPal calorie limit. With this limit, I need to not only make sure I keep under my limit, but find ways to fill those calories with better food choices. I like to snack, and usually reach for salty snacks that are bad for me. I know I should eat more fruit or veggies as a snack, but when I am hungry in the evening I want salt. I need to focus on limiting my serving sizes or finding better options when I get cravings. So there it is, the beginning of the journey. I am nervous but excited to start living better. I hope to update this thread as much as possible and show progress. Wish me luck!

  3. Thanks for the reply! I am actually doing this with my wife, and she is on here too. So I definitely have her watching my back too.
  4. It's been a while since I have posted. I briefly started following Nerd Fitness last October and joined a 6 week challenge as a level 1 rebel. Everything started off very well, I lost 4 pounds and was feeling good. Shortly after, my wife and I moved to a new apartment and our lives became pretty hectic for a few weeks. Needless to say, I didn't finish the 6 week challenge. Shortly after moving the holidays came around and everything went downhill from there. I gained back the 4 pounds I lost, plus a few more. All of my clothes are getting tight and it drives me crazy! It's like as soon as I start losing a few pounds I feel like I did well and my mind gives up on my body. It's time for that to stop. My big problem I think is that I never tell anyone about my plans to get healthy. My plan is to start posting to the rebellion each day with my progress to keep me honest and hopefully stick with it. If I need to tell someone how I did each day maybe i will stick with it. If I'm the only one that knows I gave up it's easy to hide it. I want to get back down to 200 lbs. and keep up with the goals I set during the 6 week challenge. I have posted my 2 starting goals for the week below, and my mission is to update this post every day with how I did. Wish me luck! 1. Drink no more than 1 pop every other day 2. Stay under my calorie limit on My Fitness Pal (2050 calories) Next week I plan to add some workouts to my goals to keep the momentum moving forward. Let's Do This!
  5. A quick update after 2 weeks. Week 3 Goal1 - Do 5 workouts (3 Beginner Body Weight Workout, 2 interval training or other cario) For this goal I got 2 of 3 for the body weight workout and 2.5 of 2 for cardio. I say 2.5 because I walked for 40 minutes on Tuesday, did interval training on Thursday, and had college alumni band on Saturday (I was on my feet most of the day). Goal 2 - only drink 1 pop per week Nailed this one. Drank 1 pop and that was it. Stuck mostly to water the rest of the week. Goal - 3 Eat under 2050 calories a day I got 5 of 7 days this week. With Saturday being alumni band I did not count calories. I didn't on Sunday either. I did not go crazy, but I know I ate more that 2050 calories. Week 4 Goal 1 Same as last week for the most part 2 body weight and 2 cardio. Goal 2 I had 1 pop on Monday. That's it! Goal 3 Same as last week 5 of 7. This week I am shooting to hit all my goals. No more messing around!
  6. Thanks for the encouragement honey! Keep up the momentum! Start small, win small. Love you too!
  7. Just a quick post. So far so good after 2 days. I am traveling for work this week so eating healthy has been difficult, but I have managed so far. I went for a 45 minute walk today and did the beginner body weight workout yesterday. Feeling sore but good about what I am doing.
  8. I cannot put destiny down (within reason, gotta work, sleep, and workout). Something about that game has just clicked with me.
  9. So I know it's almost week 3 of this challenge but I am hoping to complete the next 4 weeks anyway. This is my first challenge and my first post with the Rebellion so I'm pretty excited. First, a little background on me. I work full-time at a software company in Ohio where I spend most of my days in an office. I knew when I started this job that I would have to put in extra effort to stay fit as I would not be moving most of the day. I started out running but never consistently kept with it and gained a bunch of weight despite training for a few races with my wife. I can now run 3 miles with no problem at all when that used to seem like a marathon, but I still have not lost any weight. After reading many of the free resources on Nerd Fitness I have decided that my problem is consistency and my diet. So this 6-week challenge is dedicated to trying something different and keeping with it. Main quest - Lose 30 lbs and feel good wearing any piece of clothing I own When I was in college, I was wearing about pants with about a 32" waist. Now I wear a 38, and depending on the cut of the pants they can be a little tight. Back then I wore a men's large shirt size and that was comfortable if not slightly baggy. Now I still wear a large, but depending on the shirt it can look skin tight on me. Now I know I was scrawny in college and it most likely would be unhealthy if I could wear a 32 again, but I still want to drop a few sizes. Plus, my wife got me these really awesome Skyrim t-shirts (because she is an awesome nerd too) that I love wearing, but I don't feel like I look good in them. I want to feel good in my clothes and in my skin, so that is why I'm here. I am tired of buying bigger clothing to fit my body instead of getting my body back to where it should be. Goal 1 - Work out/complete a physical activity 5 times a week, 3 of which must be the Beginner Body Weight Workout or equivalent This goal is about changing up how I work out. In previous attempts to lose weight and get fit I focused only on running as I was trying to train for races. Now I do enjoy running outside and on a nice trail, but treadmills are the worst! I do nothing but focus on how tired and sweaty I am even if I have a TV show to watch while running or music to listen to. That is why I want to focus my workouts on strength training. I need to change things up. I don't have any equipment at home, so that is why I chose the Beginner Body Weight Workout. On the other 2 days a week I want to do some shorter runs or interval training. Goal 2 - Limit myself to 1 pop a week Can you tell I am from the Midwest? Yes, we call it pop and not soda This goal and my next are about taking small steps in the right direction as far as my diet goes. I have always been so resistant to change that I repeatedly fail when trying to overhaul my diet. Cutting down the amount of pop I drink may seem like a small goal, but it's one that will help me prove to myself that I CAN form new, better habits. Goal 3 - Keep under my daily calorie limit of 2050 calories (according to the My Fitness Pal app) This goal is again about proving I can form new habits without changing everything I do. I a big believer of the "start small, win small" philosophy, and the article on Nerd Fitness about willpower being a finite resource really clicked with me. That is why I want to focus staying under my calories for now without 100% cutting out foods I like to eat. I have been working on this for 2 weeks now and things are going well. Life Goal - Start saving up money each month so my wife and I can go on vacation Saving money is another area I have always struggled with, mostly because my wife and I eat out a lot. When we go grocery shopping each week we do well with saving money, but there are a lot of times we get lazy and put it off. Motivation My main motivation is to stay healthy and fit for my wife. I want to have a long and happy life with her and this is my first step towards that goal. That's all there is for my first post. I plan to track my goals very carefully over the next 4 weeks and hopefully form some new habits that will get me towards a new, happier lifestyle. Thanks for reading!
