  1. Hey raptron! Thanks! Right this minute, I am eating sunflower seeds (one at a time). At night I'm going to shoot to eat carrots, celery, beef jerky, and popcorn as alternatives. Drinking water and decaf/herb teas too. That helps. What do you eat whilst watching tv? BTW, we probably only watch 30-60 min four nights a week when I'm not working on a show. Well below the American average, but still... time on the sofa doing not much. Hiya Sylph! I've never tried knitting or crochet. Mini painting is an option, I have some friends who do that. I have a hard time focusing on TV if I'm painting though. I've been told podcasts are good instead, but then I lose time with Mrs. MG. Also I'd need to get bifocals! I can't see the TV well enough from the sofa, and I can't paint the minis without reading glasses because my arms are too short. Chainmail sounds fun--I'm going to google what that involves Are you planning on tracking/doing stuff on this challenge? Would love to see what you're up to. Lunch was reasonable. Small bowl of leftovers from last night (more of the same). Probably one portion of veggies (broccoli) which gets me to three for the day. I think I can manage four... I mean, I know I can at least exceed that. Maybe I'll bump my goal to five. We're heading to a hot tub store tonight (HOT TUB!!! WOOT!) to look at a hot tub for our new house! Super excited for that. The shop said they'd store it for us til we have the pad and electricity put in so that's a good thing. Just gotta decide to go for it. And, everyone knows ya can't eat in the hot tub.
  2. When we do that here in the flatter parts of Colorado, we still call it bushwhacking. Sometimes it's incorporated into a regular trail run. So whether it's at a running pace, a walk, or a hike, if you're cutting across the terrain regardless of trails, we call it bushwhacking. So you're a bushwhacker!
  3. Last night Mrs. MG made me a skillet-y thing: leftover elk steak with 1/3 of a potato, peppers, broccoli, salsa, and a bit-o-cheese. So yum. I have leftovers for lunch today. This morning we hit the day with another blackberry spinach smoothie. I wish I liked having them every day. Was planning to ride in, but I had to deliver the kiddo to his summer camp so driving happened. I have a full-on primal lunch prepared, and I get to go to yoga at lunchtime too. Today feels good so far. Stepped on the scale this morning and it read 172, which is either a fluke or I'm really dehydrated. We'll see what tomorrow says.
  4. Status report: So, today I had a smoothie with about 2C of baby spinach, and some big asparagus for lunch. I haven't had any sweet junk food but I did eat a bagel mid-morning. Possibly part of breakfast. It gave me heartburn (as always). No working out today as it's a rest day and I had a big workout weekend. Off to pick up the apprentice... MG99
  5. Urgent request for assistance from any and all Rebels: I need your help. I'm down and having a rough go of things. I feel like I'm sugar's bitch and it's time I do something about that. I know it's been a long time since I've shown up on these boards. But I know for a fact that when I do show up, changes happen. So here's where I'm at: I'll do what I can. Sugar kicks my butt. I like to eat it. I especially love to eat it late at night before I go to bed, or while I'm watching TV in the evenings, or right when I get off work. Or sometimes, just whenever. I'm tracking my food, and my weight. Yes, I am focused on my weight. I'm at about 175 pounds right now and I want to get down to 160 in the short term, 150 in the long term. And, it's not a solid 175 by the way. I'm a slight guy with a big and getting bigger midsection. I'd like to build a life where I'm not struggling to keep weight off. I'd LOVE to go off acid reflux medication. I'd love to be able to cosplay as something other than a hobbit, and not feel self conscious. Heck, I want to make sure I don't have to buy a new wetsuit this year (I'm a volunteer at the aquarium). I'd love to be able to get back into aerial dance. Finally, I'd love to stop worrying about all that. For the time being, here are my goals: 1. Eat at least four servings of vegetables per day. 2. Not eat any sweet junk food. OK, my birthday is coming up, and there will be cake. But that's it. No candy, no sugary pastries, no ice cream, nada. 1T of maple syrup on oatmeal (or whatever other whole-grain hot cereal I might make) 3. Eat more healthfully. This means limiting grains, eating whole grains when grains are involved, eating more vegetables, and less things that are fried. Right now we're gonna stick to the general. I'll get more specific as we move forward. That's it. Simple, easy, and focused on what matters.
  6. Hey, I'm back, and I need help!  All my allies, all my friends, any supporters out there.  I need to quit with the sugar and the over eating.  But especially where it concerns sugar.

I've put on weight (not a ton, but enough so I'm bothered by it) and I keep putting it on.

There's a long story behind all this, but it's mostly excuses.  Here's what I want to do:

Stop overeating.  Don't eat added sugar.

Am going to put myself in the four-week challenge, with this as my single goal.  Steps towards eliminating added sugar in my diet.

Now, who has my back?  Because I know I can't do this alone.  And I'll warn you:  It's going to get... boring.  Because reading about how I'm craving sugar and not eating it, or relapsing, and eating it, and then coming back and trying to stop again might get dull.

  7. So no superpowers gained from the barium tests. Oh well. Was kind of neat to see my esophagus and stomach in action Was below on calories yesterday, and so far, also today. No time to workout though since I leave work to go home, and have to dash to D&D. No workout yesterday either as getting to and from the hospital takes 90 min each way and that ate all my free time.
  8. Thanks... it was good. She's having a rough year. Too much medical problems. Old age is a bitch, eh? The weekend was spent working on the cars. We inherited a 22 year old Jeep to go along side our 32 year old van. So I replaced the headlight buckets on the van, changed the oil, and tried to troubleshoot the speed sensor on the van, then spent hours upon hours disassembling all the engine accessories on the jeep to get at the water pump. My ineptitude cost me probably 3 hours of work. And then I came down with a cold . But I think the jeep works!!! Anyway, last week I got my yoga classes in and managed to track calories for most of the days. Not Monday, and not Sunday, but most of Saturday and all the rest of the weekdays. I'm off to a bad start today, as I haven't tracked anything for today and didn't get to yoga. Didn't want to slime the yoga mat... Rode to school most days last week, and at least three of my yoga classes incorporated either cycling or weight lifting. I managed to stay at least 500 calories below my caloric burn on most days which is good. Today I'm nursing a runny nose, and tomorrow I have a weird medical procedure involving NUCLEAR RADIATION which hopefully will give me superpowers but probably will just make me queasy.
  9. Thanks... working hard to be back . Went to "Yoga Strength" today, which is basically so many pushups and one-legged downward dogs... plus a bunch of dumbbells. Nothing is hard but the sustained effort for an hour is a bit of work. Plus riding to and from work, and all my appointments on campus, it's a good amount of exercise I've put in. Tracked my food yesterday and today. It's a drag but I'm familiar with it and MyFitnessPal seems to know what I eat, so it's not like it's hard. Tonight am headed out to dinner with a friend, plus groceries at the big box store.
  10. WOW THAT WAS AMAZING. I have not followed you or anyone else in real time so I look and am reading about your day and you have a list and it seems overwhelming and then I scroll down to just now and the list has been conquered (more or less)! Good on you. And everybody should buy a Bowie shirt from Salinger. Super unique, cool, wearable art. And it has Bowie on it.
  11. Hello! Glad to see you're still here when I got back. I too am turning my attention away from running. Many reasons. Enjoy the crossfit mania....
  12. Yesterday was a travel day. I didn't record anything but I did put in miles of walking and running. Today is better so far, biked to work and hit "cycle flow" at the gym--that's a half hour spin class with a half hour of yoga afterwards. So ding, I got my first yoga session of the week Tracking food too...
  13. It's a new challenge! I've been away because it was the end of the summer/start of the semester and work becomes "overwhelming" (in a word) at that time. But it's starting to slow down a bit now, so I figured I may just put fingertips to keyboard and write a goal for myself. I've realized that resistance is futile. I need to change my way of life. Things are unmanageable and I always take an "all or nothing" approach to life, and that hasn't worked. So I'm going to slow down, take a level of Druid (not really but kind of) and see what I can do about my biggest pitfalls: Flexibility, and diet. So here's the plan: Four yoga classes per week (or at least a half hour stretching session if that's not possible), and I will track my calories, with a goal of keeping my caloric intake below my caloric expenditure. That's it. Easy enough, right? I get back from a quick trip to Washington DC on Monday. I'll still be riding, maybe running, maybe lifting, but all that counts is the yoga/stretching and the caloric counts. I'll post on MyFitnessPal for anyone who wants to friend me there (just changed my login name to Mediaguy99). Meanwhile I'll probably also post about family life, child rearing, smallbore rifle practice in preparation for winter biathlon season, and archery, and swing / salsa dancing, and Jeep repair, and ancient VW Van repair, and #vanlife, and rain, and wildfires, and all the wonders that are Colorado in the fall. Also I'm getting treated for GERD (gastro-esophogeal reflux disease) which I've had since I was about 18 and discontinued meds for in 2013. It's been hard to keep the symptoms under control but there's a new medical procedure that my doc says I'm a good candidate for, which should help a lot. I'll post more about that as I get closer to finding out if I can really get it done.
  14. That is what it is all about. I remember running with my little apprentice, when he was REALLY little, in his "jogging" stroller. Finding a trail that was at least on dirt that the chariot could manage, and being so happy about that compared to my runs on pavement through the neighborhood. Forest running is medicine for me.... I'm enjoying your introspection through the process. I hope you get to play in the more serious campaign. I know that when our kiddo started needing more and more attention at bed time was when Mrs. MG dropped out of our games
  15. What a tough struggle! It must be hard to want to, even be told to, disconnect with your mum. Detaching with love is hard in any circumstance. But think of the peace you might find if you can do it!
  16. Just back from a road bike ride up Flagstaff Road to the Amphitheatre. Such a classic Boulder ride. I have a friend that rode it 1000 times over 20 years. Which is pretty amazing. First draft of next challenge: 1. Get on the bike: At least twice a week, once each for road and mountain biking. Unless the trails are muddy in which case twice for road. 2. Don't lose your legs: Keep running, at least twice a week. 3. Hit the weights: Two bodyweight or "actual" weight workouts per week. 4. Reach for it: Yes, two half hour or longer stretching sessions, with or without the foam roller. Can be a yoga class. 5. Don't eat like a big jerk: No more than one sweet thing a day. Bonus points for archery and riding to work. Need to figure out the specifics though... it was way to hard to hit my published statistical goals last time. I've been obsessing about sugar, and starving / binging on it on a regular basis. I'm going to try and just be mindful in the way I eat for the next challenge, and not be so focused on my carb/sugar macro. Just to see how that goes.
  17. Thanks for that! We did a bunch of your suggestions. Also jogged a half mile to and from the park as a warm up/cool down. Burpees, with modified push ups squats park bench dips lunges table rows (where you lie under the table and do a modified pull up) Flutter kicks Classic sit ups She liked it which was great. I personally prefer lifting actual weights in a gym--it's so much more expedient! But if this is what works for her, then I'll take it.
  18. Week Four tallies 1. Run for it: 4/5, including the long run, which was actually a mountain bike ride. 2. Banish sugar: 1/5 3. Fiber: 4/5 4. Water: 5/5 5. Archery practice: Nope, my bow was in the shop, and then I left for Vegas. 6. Get on the bike: +1 bonus point, rode twice 7. Weights: Nope. Totals for the challenge: 64/80, which is not so great. Oh well, better luck next time. I can live without the extra money towards a new bow. The boyer at the shop said it'd be fine to use my current bow for this season, and I'm not certain I'm going to hunt anyway. I just don't want to spend all the vacation time, since I don't have a ton at the moment. But who knows, maybe I'll change my mind in the next couple of weeks... It was a good challenge, and I'm sure that without the accountability it gave me I would NOT have run as many times in Las Vegas or Mexico. I feel like I've become obsessed with sugar over the course of the past few challenges though--not the effect I was hoping to have! I will think long and hard about that this week as I approach the beginning of the next challenge. Tonight I'm doing a bodyweight workout with Mrs. MG, at her request. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated, otherwise it'll be pull ups, dips, lunges, shoulder push ups, regular push ups, and those things where you go from plank to forearm plank.
  19. New watch hunting sounds fun
  20. When we were in Mexico, every time it rained (that is, the entire time almost all day every day) there were itty bitty frogs hopping about. Some much much tinier than the one you took a picture of. Like smaller than a small house fly small. So very cute. How did the weekend wrap up?
  21. Now that is awesome. Nothing like getting outside!!! It totally changes things for me, personally...
  22. LOOK AT ALL THAT PROGRESS!!! Nice rally on the running at the end there. The hobbies are also doing well, and yes, homeowner is a mega time-sucking hobby in itself. Looking forward to the next challenges....
