  1. Hello rebels: I'm new here. I just posted my first challenge, in the assassins' guild. As a long-time runner, at first I thought I should post in the Scouts section. But running has been hard on my body (like the elves of middle earth, I feel kind of ancient at age 43) and I thought that maybe my goals around fitness would make me a better Ranger. So I posted first right there. THEN, however, I realized that my interests in the aerial arts, as well as my desire to increase my flexibility, would make me more of an Assassin. So, I'm an Assassin. I figured I'd come here and introduce myself. Hopefully this forum will help me stick to my goals. I've played RPG's since I was in elementary school. Played D&D first edition, third edition, 3.5, 4th, and now am playing 13th age and 5th edition. I love the imagination required to be a good player, and I love hoarding dice and painting miniatures. For work, I design audio visual systems at a large university, and manage the software/hardware audio response system service for the campus. I started trying to build up my fitness this summer. This is something I've done over and over again, over many years. Historically, when I think about fitness, I lean towards two things: Endurance, via running and cycling, and flexibility, through yoga and other movement arts. Running has caused me untold injuries, but there's really nothing like it for me. It feeds my soul, keeps me healthy, and breaks me at the same time. Yoga is something I do because if I don't, I get injured more. I've always avoided the gym, though over the past few weeks I've been getting in to do more weight and bodyweight workouts. Actually, this summer, my wife got me a pull up bar for my birthday. Since then, I've gone from being able to do just three or four pull-ups with a "natural grip" to my new PR, 11. Also, I've had acid reflux disease since I was about 16. I took medication to help with that since the late 90's, but I started to question why I was taking pills to be able to eat last summer (2013). I got off the pills by last fall, quit drinking caffeine (a pot of coffee a day!) and started experimenting with the Paleo diet. I found that if I eat strictly paleo, I don't have any indigestion. If I eat even a little grains (whether it's rice, wheat, corn, oats…) I nearly immediately get indigestion. Of course, I am a weak person, and even though I knew how good it was for me, I only kept eating paleo until the holidays. Then it went away completely. Ah well. I started my paleo regime again in August this year, and have stuck with it pretty well! Again, I'm hoping this community will help me stick with it further OK, I've got to run to yoga class (starts in 10 min).
  2. Thanks for the welcome aboard! I took two six-week trapeze classes about four years ago, then let it go until last summer. Then I took a two-week daily bungie workshop, which was an absolute blast! Since then I've been doing trapeze almost every week. It's hard, but hopefully it will get easier with some more strength training.
  3. I'm new to NerdFitness, though I've gotten the regular emails from NerdFitness for some time now. As an avid RPG'er, the real-life role playing really appeals to me, so here I am! Overall, I'd like recompose my body. I'm fairly lean, but I don't have a lot of muscle. I'm hoping to up my muscle composition, and reduce my overall fat content. I also would like to increase my flexibility, though at my age (43) I'm not sure how possible that is, really. I am hoping to do this through a combination of distance running, diet, and strength training. I am already a runner, and recently have added strength training to my weekly routine. I also take one or two aerial dance classes per week, usually trapeze or aerial hoop. Right now, though, I'm working on a production of the Rocky Horror Show (stage version, not the movie), so I have rehearsal almost every night and won't have time for an aerial class until mid-October. Finally, I go to at least two yoga classes at my gym every week. So here are my current, short-term, attainable goals: Body composition goal: Get fat content measured for a baseline Fitness goal: Strength training 3x/week (that's adding one day to the current routine) Running (or cycling) 4x/week (that's adding one day to the current routine) Yoga 2x/week Diet goal: Maintain paleo diet all day, Monday through Friday, and eat sensibly on the weekends (that's adding two paleo meals to the current routine) I started my fitness plan in early August. At that time I weighed nearly 170 lbs, and I had an aerial dance performance (my first one!) coming up and felt like I needed to lose some weight (and quickly!) I quit eating cereal, rice, sodas, fried food, dairy, and anything fried or with added sugar. I started eating meat and vegetable stir fry (of all sorts) every night for dinner, a spinach/fruit smoothie with some turkey sausage every morning for breakfast, and fruit, veggies, and meat for lunch every day. Friday nights through Sunday nights, I let myself eat whatever I like. Since then I've dropped to 158 lbs, and I attribute that mostly to diet, though I have increased my distance and weight training a bit since then.
