1. Another go Running total: 397 minutes (6.6 hrs) better hit those pedals if you're going to catch me!
2. Heh, well the reason that I asked was because this very situation happened to me yesterday. I'm fortunate enough that my workplace has a small locker room and shower area, which affords me the ability to get sweaty either before work or during a lunch hour and get back to my desk smelling squeaky clean. I went for a ride over my lunch hour yesterday and as luck had it, I forgot my towel at my desk. I had too little time left on my break to make to my office and back so I had to choose to either air dry, use my sweat-drenched cycling jersey, or 'borrow' someone elses towel that was hanging around (eww). Chose to use my jersey as an impromptu towel, and as it turns out the moisture wicking material it's made of worked quite well. 3. I eat when i'm hungry and try to not stick to any sort of set meal schedule. Works out well for me! Rather than a thought today, I present an informal poll to discuss: You just finish your workout and are about to jump in the shower, only to realize you forgot your towel. Do you: A) Use your drenched-in-sweat-workout-shirt to dry off with and hope for the best Skip the shower and hope nobody in the office notices C) Other
4. ruh roh I'm so awesome it's scary. Total: 366 minutes (6.1 hrs)
5. I think it would depend on how long you were planning to fast. MANY paleo pundits talk about the benefits of fasting anywhere from 12 to 24 hours. The detrimental 'starvation mode' you're talking about isn't triggered by short term fasting, but by continually falling short of your daily caloric needs. I know Robb Wolf, Mat Lalonde, and Tim Ferris have all talked about the benefits of intermittent fasting as a way to help detox, and re-start weight loss. I'll see if I can dig up some links, but most of what I've learned has been through podcasts. EDIT: I'll add links here as i find them: http://www.marksdailyapple.com/fasting/ http://robbwolf.com/2010/05/16/living-la-vida-low-carb-and-intermittent-fasting-resources/
6. Awesome. You need to work a Till-Hammer into your routine somehow. Buch Dich was my racing theme song. Anytime I was at the start line I'd crank it up before dropping the hammer. Ironically though, I usually was so focused on following my line that I didn't even hear the song until after the run was complete and my senses re-focused. As always, excellent quote. So many people get caught up in the minutiae of their lives that it's not until years later when they look back that they realize they're basically the same person, in the same place, doing the same things as they were back then. I choose to NOT be that person.
7. Back in bizniss After several days off the bike, I went for a record setting ride at lunch today. Running Total: 326 minutes (5.4 hrs)
8. And a thought for the day/week/whatever "Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don’t need.” -Tyler Durden
9. OH! One awesome thing I *DID* do that has nothing to do with fitness (other than copious amounts of headbanging) was that I had my mind blown at the Rammstein concert last Friday. I took some pics with my iPhone throughout the show, but they really don't do the concert any justice at all. I seriously can't wait for the dvd of this tour to come out. It was completely unreal. If you want to check out the gallery, here's the link: https://picasaweb.google.com/100948439388997668961/RammsteinMay132011?authkey=Gv1sRgCKOmpf-fmZO4pQE&feat=directlink
10. ack.. gout! Dude that totally sucks. My co-worker that shares cube-space with me gets it bad sometimes. He can barely walk when it flares up for him. It really does seem like Paleo could at least help with the symptoms, but like you said - trying to figure out the catalyst will be tough since you've been following Paleo already. I hope things clear up soon for you! Being laid up because of injury/illness totally sucks.
11. Hey everyone! Mucho apologies for not being around and as active as I should have been! Looks like the house hasn't burned down or anything though, so that's cool! Life has been crazy busy for me these past couple weeks. Some new projects at work coming down the pipe that have been seriously limiting my slack-ability, which in turn has been limiting my NF time!! Pretty much all my spare time at home has been devoted to cleaning and packing for the move, and my office is getting nearly un-navigable due to it being nearly full of already packed boxes. I HAVE been keeping up with the cycling at lunch in my attempt to annihilate Alethea in our biking challenge, and have also been mostly keeping up with the BW training and C25K running as well. Haven't been able to do it every day, but have at least been maintaining and not falling behind, so I really can't complain - considering everything else going on around here! Movie project has been put on hold until after the move, so that portion of the challenge has fallen completely off the radar. Ah well.. Pick your battles, I guess! No matter what though, I'm glad to have all you on my team this challenge. It has been awesome seeing you all doing so well, despite setbacks and illnesses! Y'all are probably the best team I've been working with since I started NF-ing last summer!
12. LOVE the rig, man.. Are you running software based RAID5 then? Are you concerned about the speed/reliability/safety of a software based RAID protocol at all? I briefly tried building a box using the freeNAS OS which worked well, but due to laziness didn't want to spend the time needed to really fine tune it and getting it running solid, so gave up and just installed XP and shared out the drives lol. Dude your mix is awesome. Love DnB and this mix will go into rotation for sure. Listening to it I get occasional flashes of old school Mocean Worker and the amazing remixes by Pogo. Well done!
13. Your pictures were amazing! Looks like a fun road trip. Some gorgeous scenery! Glad to have you back!
14. don't forget the always classic animaniacs songs!! (love it!! ironically awesome)
15. ack. Page 4? really? aye.. while my PC has not been fully surrounded by boxes yet, it's quite close actually. We're using my office as the staging area until our POD arrives and it's starting to get pretty cramped in there. BUT, that's not really an excuse for not posting. I have been lurking around here, just not finding the time to write meaningful replies that often. Diet is back on track, fitness activities have leveled off, and my weight loss has to some degree as well. I'm not upset about this though. Right now it's more important to balance the time I have with packing and cleaning to make our coming move as painless as possible. I'm pleased with the progress I've made so far, and am pleased that I'm maintaining at my new current weight. Getting lots of complements on my 'new' look and am fitting a number of shirts that were previously unwearable. Still have a box full, waiting in the wings, but dammit it feels nice to have more of a selection to pick from. I think my posts will continue to be sparse (busy at work and home right now), but do know that I'm at least keeping up with my own plan and am lurking on the rest of your challenges!!
16. Hey! It's called runkeeper. Available for free for your iphone, winmo, or android and it's completely awesome. Check it out! If you don't have a smartphone you can still add all your info manually on the runkeeper website. Should you decide use it, feel free to add me to your street team - http://runkeeper.com/user/jwywal - always looking for more people to compare with!
17. I absolutely agree, man. I've never felt better in my life thanks to the absence of grains. My opinion of destination definitely falls in line with your description - that of ultimate health and well-being. Sadly though, our definition of healthy is a much different one from what most of the civilized world holds to be true, and for them. It's certainly an interesting point to debate. Most people living off the SAD will never achieve the goal of 'true health', but that's not to say they can't live long, semi-fulfilling lives either. If you're active, attempt to lead a healthy diet, even with the inclusion of grains I tend to think you could still live to see your grandchildren grow up. Will you be as healthy as you could be? Likely not. Will you live as long as you possibly could? Likely not as well, but you can't tell me that every single person that's not paleo but otherwise 'healthy', is going to die of horrible causes before their time. It will be more work for them to maintain their 'healthy' lifestyle what with the constant inflamation battle they'll (unknowingly) be waging with grains, but since that's what is 'normal' to them, they won't know any different. As Wolf says fairly often on different topics - 'You may survive, but you won't thrive'
18. I have a sneaking suspicion my challenger is biding her time, not posting her rides.. and then will jump me with them all in one shot and shoot way past my total....
19. And again. Was a shorter ride today due to my needing to be back for a meeting right at 1pm. Bonus! Found some singletrack to ride, just to make it a little interesting. Extra Bonus! Drew first blood of the season riding said singletrack. AWESOME. Running Total: 288 minutes (4.8 hrs)
20. I love my VFFs so much that I plan on getting another pair for daily use, instead of just for working out. They are SO comfortable! re: treadmill. Is your belt slipping, or does the motor stop? If it's slipping it's because there's not enough tension in the rollers to support your bodyweight (not meant as a slag at all). Have a look at either end of the belt track for a screw on each side. This should be your tension adjust. Adjust them equally on both sides, and only adjust a little at a time (1/4 turn or so) until you find the belt keeps its movement while you're on it. Bear in mind that running will provide a completely different impact than walking and will probably cause the belt to slip even when walking or jogging seems ok. If the motor stops/slows it likely is worn out, or just isn't strong enough to work for your bodytype. For this reason alone I like to use the ones at the gym because the commercial grade motors are WAY stronger and I don't experience any belt slip or slowdown there. My mill at home is rated for my bodyweight, but I can tell the motor in there does not appreciate it, while it works just fine for my wife.
21. Fantastic quote, and excellent strategy. Less reps more weight definitely works better at building bulk and peak strength.
22. Being sick in any capacity sucks. It's just too draining doing the simple task of getting through the day without having to worry about diet and fitness on top of it. Kudos for at least continuing to eat paleo - a task I would probably consider waffling on if I were in the same boat. re: recurring infection - not something that could be brought on/exacerbated by blacksmithing? fumes, stray particulates, etc overtaxing your sinus system to the point it gets infected? Have you every tried flushing your sinuses on a regular basis with a neti pot? You'd be amazed at the crap that comes out of your sinuses when you 'wash' them..
23. Funny how tasks that normally look daunting, or like too much work are just seen as half decent workout by fitness minded folk lol. What are you running for a file server? For the ease of compatibility on my network I run xp on an old box I had kicking around with 4 1tb drives housing all my pics, movies (owned), music (owned), and tv (not owned). System streams out to our PCs, phones, XBMCs, and my 360 as well as manages all the scheduled backups. Next step will be to invest in a good RAID5 card and a couple more 1tb drives.
24. Wow.. you guys pretty much covered anything I would have said myself. While *I* think that Paleo would work for ANYONE, it's like any other significant life change (quitting smoking, getting married, etc) - you need to be open, willing, and ready to make that change. When it comes to diet and exercise, if your mindset is so ingrained on conventional wisdom that you're unwilling to explore other options (machines are teh best!!!1! whole grains FTW!!!) - there's really no point in trying to change your mind. Like you guys said - there's multiple paths to get to the same destination. Some look more lunatic fringe than others, but once you're part of the lunatic fringe, everything else looks crazy! When people ask me what I've done to lose the weight I have and I reply with low carb, no grains their eyes usually glaze over. The next question is usually how long do I need to follow this 'diet'. I say it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle decision. I generally lose them completely at that point as they ponder life without baguettes, donuts and pizza. Sometimes it's just not worth the battle.
