Mom and I are going to Utah for a hiking trip in the fall, and we're not physically at the level we need to be for the trip. So we're going hiking a lot more! Western Pennsylvania offers a lot of great hiking opportunities from steep hills to giant rocks to climb over and cool looking streams, rivers, and waterfalls.  We've already started today and I'm so tired, but I know the more we hike, the easier it will get.  I'm going to stretch before and after hikes, and maybe do some supportive leg and balance exercises to protect my hips and knees.

This is the perfect time of year for a hiking meet up!

  2. Ridiculous Update Time:

So went to Denver. I ended up having weird and crazy feet swelling and overall just general crappiness. I think it was a combination of the second week of travel and traveling to Denver (I don't do well in Denver and this is not the first time I've felt badly after travel - and I didn't stay in my normal hotel, which could have something to do with it). *sigh* the joys of travel.

So feeling better now, I'll be back to the grind shortly.

    Mmm spice cake.

I hope your weekend went well and your cake pops were great!

    Thanks!

I'm on the road this week again, so updating is hard. But I'll do a run down when I get home Thursday!

That was nice of you to bake the cake for their cake pops. But if they're ruining your cake anyway, you could just eat some :D

I love cake pops, especially when they are homemade, so I am willing to wait. Fun fact: spice cake with cream cheese icing is the bomb.

    5/12:

    • What did I do?
      • Gym - am
        • 15 min AMRAP / rest 2 minutes / 15 min AMRAP
        • 6 min core
      • Gym - pm
        • Squat work / accessories
        • OHP work / accessories
      • Shine
      • 8 work tomatoes. It was a busy, but productive day. I need a better system for when I don't hit my tomatoes and making sure I'm catching up.
      • cleaned the hall bathroom
      • finished baking cakes (I made 3 overall) and did a bunch of dishes.
    • What did I eat?
      • spinach egg white scramble with salsa and cheese / protein toast
      • burritos
      • mango banana protein smoothie (which was perfect. literally smooth like gelato)
      • popcorn chicken (we were supposed to have fish, but I didn't eat enough before the gym, so I needed something I didn't have to work to make)
      • hot chocolate
    • How did I feel?
      • Another good day. I had part of the difficult conversation with my husband and it was really a "he didn't think about it" scenario (which is what I expected)
    • What didn't I do?
      • I had planned on cleaning the primary bathroom, but didn't. I also had a task that got added to my plate yesterday that I didn't complete yet.

  5. 5/11:

    • What did I do?
      • No gym. I decided to sleep in and go later on in the day, but there was a schedule change and the afternoon class was cancelled
      • Got through 7 tomatoes at work for the day AND crossed off an outstanding task on my list
      • Also swept, vacuumed, and mopped
      • And baked a cake
    • What did I eat?
      • Egg whites with spinach, cheese, and salsa + toast
      • Burritos
      • spinach and goat cheese Hasselback chicken
      • hot chocolate
      • rice cake with nutella
    • How did I feel?
      • Another decent day. I wanted to go to the gym, but not going made my evening less rushed, which was also nice.
    • What didn't I do?
      • Still slacking on a handful of e-mails I need to send out. Not a priority, but something that I need to get done. I also need to get some prep done for end of year evals, which I haven't done yet.

I absolutely love bean and cheese burritos! It's also so easy to load them up with "whatever is in the fridge" that we eat them quite regularly :).

My husband and I have been using an app for meal planning and this is one of the recipes, so it's a specific recipe. But it's still amazing. We eat them pretty much every other week.

Was this the first time you flipped the tire, or did you do it before?

I've done it before in a handful of races, but never during training. And honestly, I don't know the weights of either tires, so I don't know comparatively how heavy or not these were. But it was still fun.

  7. Fingers crossed that you can talk to the trainer then! I agree that interns should be able to learn, but I'd think that someone else would be there overseeing them.

It's hard enough to get back in the swing of gyms and workouts without having anything get you discouraged. It sucks, but hopefully it gets better!

  8. 5/10:

    • What did I do?
      • Bootcamp in the am. We did 4 - 6 min AMRAPs (well, technically, 3 were 6 minutes and the last was an unspecified amount of time
      • Strength in the pm
        • this was fairly uneventful, although I did get to flip the big tire. I spoke about this a bit in another thread, but the trainer for this class is new to training and he's horrible at programming. It's getting to the point that there really isn't a strength and conditioning class and the group is getting fairly frustrated. Luckily, we were able to speak to the owner, but it really makes me want to get my personal training certification to be able to teach this class.
      • Only 5 things on my work list. I had forgotten to do something that was supposed to have been completed by 5/1, so I had to go back and finish it. I probably could have made the project more than 1 tomato, but rules are rules.
      • My husband helped me get all of the things done on my home list, which was really nice
    • What did I eat?
      • pumpkin protein pancakes with turkey bacon
      • bean and cheese burritos (these are homemade and amazing)
      • bbq chicken and sweet potatoes with a cranberry spinach salad
      • hot chocolate
      • rice cake with cookie butter
    • How did I feel?
      • Today was a decent day. I didn't really have anything making waves. I do have something I need to talk to my husband about that I've been putting off (but is coming to a point where I can't put it off), so I'm a little nervous about that
    • What didn't I do?
      • the call I was supposed to prep for was cancelled, so that came off my plate until next week. I have to make 6 ppt slides and write a few e-mails that I missed. As long as I focus, I'll get a lot of things done today

I did not like yesterday's "strength" class:

Is there a trainer at the gym you can talk to about your concerns? We are having a similar issue with one of the new trainers at my gym (he's just not used to programming and doesn't do a good job at it). It's super frustrating, particularly for some of the people who aren't physically able to do everything he puts into the workouts (and he's not good at modifying). I hope you find a good answer to your situation!

2 breakfasts in the same day is a win!

Real talk, I love breakfast. Like I could eat it every day for every meal and never get tired of it.

    5/9:

    • What did I do?
      • Gym
        • Supersets Assisted Pull-ups / Bosu ball push ups
        • Supersets Burpee rope slams / mountain climbers
        • Supersets goblet squats / lunges (maybe? I don't remember)
        • Supersets lat pull downs / cross body hammer curls
        • 15 minute AMRAP abs
          • turtle crunches
          • leg lifts
          • vertical toe touches
          • reverse crunches
      • I had more work meetings than I would have liked and then I slacked. Only hit 6 things on my list
    • What did I eat?
      • protein pumpkin pancakes with turkey bacon
      • turkey sandwich with yogurt (on the side, not in the sandwich)
      • green smoothie
      • bbq chicken and sweet potatoes with a cranberry spinach salad
      • hot chocolate
    • How did I feel?
      • A little frustrated. I ended up making three separate dinners because my daughter didn't like what I was making for the kids and I didn't have to tell her yes, but it was the easier answer. Not too bad until I also had the grandchild wanting attention. And no one else was on the main floor, so I was trying to get everything done while getting back up, which didn't happen.
    • What didn't I do?
      • prep for a call tomorrow (5/11). I'll work on it today instead

    • What did I do?
      • I had a full rest day. I didn't get home until really late, so my 5:30 gym time didn't happen. I had originally planned to run, but it rained all day.
      • I hit 8 tasks at work, which is the first day in a while I've been that productive
      • Nothing else really, it was a nice relaxing day
    • What did I eat?
      • Eggs with salsa and hashbrowns (at home though, so they were considerably better
      • Meatballs and hashbrowns for dinner
      • My stomach wasn't feeling the thing today, so light on food and just relaxing
    • How do I feel?
      • I was tired all day and the weather wasn't helping. Other than that, it wasn't bad
    • What didn't I do?
      • Expenses are still outstanding
      • I was also supposed to go support my husband while he did a fundraiser, but with the weather I noped out

    5/7

    • What did I do?
      • Deka Strong training
      • Yoga
      • Laundry
    • What did I eat?
      • Chocolate chip muffin for breakfast
      • Meat and cheese with toast for a snack
      • Daughter's birthday dinner - kani salad and two sushi rolls from a local place
    • How do I feel?
      • Still in recovery from the travel. I was a little irritated because my husband and I played Lost Ark with two friends and got hard carried through some things. I struggle to get my husband to understand that I want to be good at whatever I do (even games) and being carried through anything is just super not fun for me.
    • What didn't I do?
      • I needed to do some cleaning that I still haven't gotten to.

    5/8

    • What did I do?
      • Spartan training (running and obstacle work - I need to prioritize grip strength)
    • What did I eat?
      • French Toast with sausage
      • Biscuits and gravy
    • How do I feel?
      • I wanted to get some extra "me" time with it being mother's day and instead I ended up with a lot of toddler time. I don't mind, but I just wasn't in the right mindset for that nonsense
    • What didn't I do?
      • I got more cleaning done than I had, but I'm not done yet. Last week, my husband forgot to put out the trash, so I'm taking it easy until tomorrow.

        • 5 push ups
      • Travel day, so just the usual meetings and the like
    • What did I eat?
      • same breakfast from yesterday
      • salad for lunch; spinach, turkey, cranberries, goat cheese and apples with vinaigrette
      • wine and chocolate for dinner. It's called balance
    • Feelings
      • nothing major, although I had hoped to sleep on the plane and the guy in the middle seat was a talker. Not to me thankfully, but to the guy on the end. Also, he was loud
    • What didn't I do?

I'm doing one of these through my gym. I am currently not winning (but I have lost weight). So I am obviously going to follow you and cheer you on and hope you do better than I have done (I have one more month or so left, so this sounds like a pvp to me!).

Is this just tiredness, or is there more going on?

It was the wording honestly. As a disclaimer, I'm not compliment fishing with this whole paragraph I'm about to write. I have a fairly skewed sense of self (stemming from an unhealthy relationship when I was younger), so I tend to devalue myself kind of across the board. But I'm definitely not one to be called gorgeous in any normal conversation. I feel like I'm just average. But to add to this, before going to eat, I'd gone to the gym. So I'm in workout capris, a workout top, and a jacket, my hair is in a super messy ponytail. Like, nothing about me was even close to trying for pretty at that point. This guy was literally just fishing. And I mean, it's whatever, a compliment can still make you feel good. But it was the fact that it was so over the top that it didn't even appear partially genuine was just too much.

Not sure I'll stick with daily updates, but I also kind of like them.

    • What did I do?
      • Gym
        • 12 min AMRAMP (10# KB)
          • 12 SA KB Snatch, R
          • 8 SA KB Thrusters, R
          • 12 SA KB Snatch, L
          • 8 SA KB Thrusters, L
        • 3 Rounds
          • 10 DB Deadlift (30#)
          • 5 DB Hang Power Snatch, R (15#)
          • 5 DB Hang Power Snatch, L (15#)
          • 7 Squat + Press (15#)
      • Ran (I did two workouts - this was my evening workout)
      • Literally meetings all day. So I didn't count tasks
    • Food
      • Hotel scrambled eggs (IYKYK), 2 sausage links, 1/2 a bagel
      • Fajita "salad" (grilled chicken thigh, lettuce, sautéed onions and peppers, and salsa) with a tortilla on the side
      • another Stroopwaffle. Because I don't usually get them
      • Pulled pork nachos (these weren't the best. Also, the portion was a half portion, but it was HUGE. I ate like a third of it)
      • pecan pie
      • 2 beers
    • Feelings
      • Not much to report here, I was really tired, which I think was a combination of travel, not enough water, and not enough food. And then we get to dinner. I ate by myself. I was invited out with a coworker, but I declined and got a later dinner at this brewery that is close to the hotel. It was nice, I sat at the bar by myself, the staff was nice but left me pretty much alone, and they had The Addams Family on tv (the movie). As I'm leaving, this guy who was also sitting at the bar (it was a large bar, so no where near where I was) stops me to tell me I'm (these are his words) "just gorgeous".
        • Not that I get hit on regularly, but it happens. And generally, I take it as a compliment and walk away. But ya'll this guy got the full wrath of Sylvaa. It made me so angry. I looked at him and just said, "no, I'm not. Just stop." and walked away. All of the anger.
    • What haven't I done?
      • I'm still good here. I know the limitations of travel / being on site and I'm not stressing. I have something I need to check on later this morning and finish up, but other than that, it's Go Home Day!

      • Gym
        • 20 minute EMOM with increasing reps
          • Goblet Squats / KB Swings / Push Press / DB Cleans / TRX Rows
      • I did get the three tasks I put off done on the plane. Wifi worked the whole time and while one is not any closer to being completed (it's research), I've checked off a lot of boxes with it.
      • Today was a travel day and uneventful. I sat in training all day when I got to the member site, so tomatoes didn't happen. I tried to catch up on / keep up with e-mails and got a lot resolved, but not quite all.
      • I also lost my 41 day Heardle streak, which makes me sad.
    • Food
      • Stroopwaffel on the plane
      • Panera Green Goddess Cobb with chicken
      • Panera Cookie
      • Pizza (3 pieces, but they were small)
      • All the carrots
      • 3 sours (which, if you can't tell by the amount of food was like 3 too many).
    • Feelings
      • I've been complaining about this meeting and having to go to Denver on short notice, but I'm actually really proud to be included in the training. I'm also optimistic about how this platform / solution can help tailor some of the side projects I've been working on.
    • What haven't I done?
      • I've actually got nothing that is from yesterday that I didn't do. I have another project that I need to work on today / tonight, so that'll be my next focus.

      • L: tuna and avocado; mango
      • D : Salmon; Asian chopped salad
      • S: yogurt and granola
    • Feelings: my husband is sick and acting like a big baby. I don't know if he's really that sick or if it's just him. It's frustrating because I leave tomorrow morning for Denver and if I catch it and it's that bad, I'm going to be mad. My daughter told me an hour ago she's be back as soon as she went to the bathroom and she's still not down here. I don't mind having P (he's eating food and watching her ipad), but I need to finish up some things that I've already crossed off before I go to bed.
    • What haven't I done?

  21. Ralph Wiggum Reaction GIF

So ya'll, I'm struggling. HARD. It's not surprising really, the past year has been an absolute roller coaster and now that the house is built, we are fully moved in, and my parents are almost moved in, I'm crashing.

    Drunk Beach GIF

Even without all that nonsense, this month is wild. I'm going to Denver twice, I've got something going on every weekend, AND we are in the midst of birthday season in our house (3 / 4 kids have birthdays between 4/27 and 5/19). Oof. So really what I want to do is track this challenge. What do I do every day, how am I feeling (mentally and physically), what I eat, and what I needed to do that I didn't. So basically, I'm using this challenge as a live journal.

What do I do every day?

Tired Arnold Schwarzenegger GIF by The Late Late Show with James Corden

Regular workouts are the best thing I do for my mental health. I just feel better when they happen. Right now, I have the option of up to 9 different classes to attend (when I'm home), 3 days to run, and at least one yoga / stretching day. The trainers at my gym are really good about sending me pictures of the group workouts if I don't get to make it in, so I have options on the road too, just not quite as many. I should do something daily for at least 30 minutes.

    working washington dc GIF

I also have a ton of work stuff on my plate. I'm balancing two service lines, two internal group projects (one is a training and one is white papers), my two employees, and helping with some other projects ad hoc. I can't spend a full day goofing off on my computer and letting tasks pile up. I've been really good about using Tasks and a Tomato Timer, but I'm also really good at ignoring both if I want to. It doesn't make it any better when you slack there Sylvaa.

    How am I feeling?

Tired King Of Queens GIF by TV Land

I've been trying to be everything to everyone (shout out to Everclear and their catchy tune). Fun fact: I can't. Now that the youngest turned 18 and will start college in the fall, I want to transition our household into more of a group effort than a "mom does this stuff and I don't". This includes helping with P (I've been informed I can't call him the baby anymore), taking care of the cooking and cleaning, and any other ad hoc responsibilities people put on my plate. It's okay for me to say no and it's okay for me to prioritize me.

This also includes physically as food has been an issue.

    What did I eat?

Food Dinner GIF by Spirited Away

Between not being strict with food, having a few extra days with alcohol, and stress, my stomach is a hot mess. It's not fun, makes me feel like crap, and isn't helping me mentally. I'm eating tums like they are going out of style. This is not a good look. So I am going to start tracking food (at least what it is) and tracking what didn't work. What I should be doing is limiting processed carbs, alcohol, and sugar. You know, what people should do anyway.

What did I need to do that I didn't?

    slacking bojack horseman GIF

Is that a kosher gif to use? I like it. Understanding that it's okay for me to not do everything, I also need to make sure things I'm not doing don't just continue to slide. Because it's really easy for me to do that. So this isn't about beating myself up for missing something, it's about being honest with myself to make sure I'm prioritizing things properly.

  23. Weekly Update:

    • Workouts are going super solid. I hit everything I could last week (Saturday yoga was cancelled). I also did a course cleanup at my local OCR training grounds, so now I have a free workout there.
      • In true Sylvaa fashion, I've also signed up (and recruited a number of gym members) for a Deka Strong event that is going to be held locally. Two of the trainers are also doing it. So we're most likely going to be incorporating those movements and trials into our regular workouts. We started this morning with Dead Balls at 40 lbs for me and 50 lbs for the guys.
    • Work went okay last week. I do not believe I hit my tomatoes, but I also didn't accurately count them. Truthfully, I need a break. I'm actually taking off this Friday and next Monday, so I'm going to get through as much stuff this week as I can, but also not beat myself up if I don't hit my numbers. I know I'm in a place where I need to step away, so this week is going to be about getting through what I need to to be able to relax over my long weekend.
    • Food is fine. Although weekends I need to stick to my plan more closely. This week, the kids are on their own for dinner, so all I have to do is take care of my husband and I. I'm looking forward to the break. The scale still appears to be going down, so it's not like I'm making bad choices, I just need to curb anything too outlandish.
    • Next weekend, we are buying and planting some fruit trees. We've discussed where they are going and what we need to get to be able to plant.
    • Also, this weekend did not suck for cleaning. I do still have to mop (and I need to mop), but everything else got done. I honestly might mop tonight, it just depends on how tired I am.
