  1. A lot of challenges, including some mean bug that's being passed around the family. So I am starting slowly, to be sure, but I have been motivated by the challenge and the responses (thanks @Mickey18, @Starsapart, @Pavowski) - I've noticed that most of my decisions are related to "how am I doing on my challenge," even if they aren't decisions that make me more fit! Finally writing down my progress - another small step to accountability!
  2. A lot of research coming out shows that the light of the screen actually tunes your brain to "awake" (I don't remember if the light turns on the awake chemicals or turns off the sleep chemicals, but that's for brain scientists, not Archers, right?). My personal data: three pages of a non-fiction book and I'm snoring; three episodes of "The Fall" and I'm still going strong at 2:00 am. Atta-girl on the bow string injury! Scars tell the story
  3. Hey, I feel you about not running after dark - I have a 20-year old daughter and I discourage her even walking off campus at night. Suppose you could wrangle a buddy into going with? Even if you have to switch to walking, it could be helpful to have someone who would knock on your door.
  4. Cheering for you! I feel the same way about some of my clothes - but I've been sliding a few years longer than you
  5. Good for you, Mickey! Senior spring is a special time in your life, and I applaud you for doing such mature thinking about how to make the most of it. (Wish I had that much sense back in the day!) You go!
  6. I hate setting goals, and I REALLY hate SMART goals. This should be good for me. Main Quest: Improve my general fitness to the point that I can run 50% of the annual 12K - walk 1K/run 1K - in May. SQ1: Walk >10 minutes six days a week. (STA+5) SQ2: Log 2 beginner body weight workouts per week. (STR+3, STA+2) SQ3: <= 3 beers per week (ouch! I love beer!). (WIS+2, CON+2, CHA+1) Motivation: To be fit enough to do fun things with my kids and to model positive changes for them. This feels ridiculously small, but (a) small changes is the name of the game - 1 xp at a time!, and ( I almost bailed on my walk today - just day 2! So, really, it's probably a BIG challenge, but small in the grand scheme. Like Frodo making it from the Shire to Bree.
  7. Another '80s survivor here (no mullet, thank goodness!). I agree it's nice to find people who know what an LP is or who remember when cable tv wasn't a thing.
  8. So tomorrow's the big day?! Good luck! Just celebrated our 25th - I'm pulling for you!
  9. Great to happen on another English teacher dad in the early stages of NF - although I would perish attempting your first body-weight workout. Time to line out my quests - thanks for the ideas.
  10. Hello? Staring 50 in the face and I'm soft, weak and heavy. A real minotaur. But Aragorn, he's like 90, and can run for three days. If I can't keep up with the U9 soccer players I coach or take a walk with my honey, I won't be much good when the grandkids start showing up. So I thought "I need a Fit-by-50 plan." And that led, via the floo-network of the interwebs, to NF. I really like the idea of very small challenges that add up to big changes. Strangely, I once invited my son to think of his life as a video game, but never made the jump to thinking of my real self the way I thought of my D&D characters back in the day. So here I am, hoping that this is part of the total package of support and change I need.
