  1. Have you ever considered grappleing arts? Judo or sambo might be rough on the knees, lots of turning and pivoting into/out of throws, but Brazilian jiujitsu should be plenty safe.
  2. I'll start this by saying a little about my own background/experience so that folks can better understand the quality of this program. I'm 25 and have been lifting since 15, with a strength focus for the last 3ish years. Before this I ran strong lifts 5x5 and 5/3/1, I also designed a few programs for myself. The actual program is incredibly simple, which is what drew me to it. You will lift three times a week, with at least one rest day between each workout. The first day with be a volume day, you will do 5x5 squat and bench as well as dead lift and a rowing movement, but with less volume (I did 3x5 on both). The second lift is an active recovery day. You will do a variation of each of the big three but this is not a hard lift, aim for getting the blood pumping but not much more. I also did a 5x5 of overhead press this day cause I love overhead press. The third lift is heavy, this lift we are seeing new pr's. Start out with 5 rep pr's and beat them every week until you become unable to regularly do so. From here it is ok to switch to other rep pr's to keep progressing. A Google search will reveal many articles with strategies and tweaks to help work through plateaus so I will not talk about them here. Before going into my personal results with this method I should say that when I started Texas method I also stopped keeping a strict diet, the only thing I've been tracking has been protein, and then only to make sure I got over 100 grams. I came into Texas method weighing 175 lbs with five rep maxes of 375 (squat), 265 (bench), 350 (dead lift). Now thirteen weeks later I weigh 200 lbs a 5 rep max of 425 (squat), 300 (bench), and 405 (dead lift). Around the 7th week I added a one count pause to the bottom of my bench, this forced me to drop the weight so I actually increased my bench strength more then what the numbers tell. The only complaint I have about this program is that it gets monotonous, setting new records every week is awesome but the lack of variety kinda gets to me. That being said I did get great strength gains and would suggest this plan to anyone purely looking to build strength.
  3. Deads always pinch my hands, you learn to work through the pain pretty quick. It could be that you, like me, have a habit of setting up with the bar to deep in your hands. Try setting up by just wrapping your fingers around the bar instead of pressing it into your palm.
  4. I second the crazy volume comment, you need to be eating to keep up with it. Try upping your overall food intake alongside daily stretching and foam rolling after the 5x5 sessions.
  5. I've failed bench, squat, deadlift, and overhead press with no spotter. The only thing I've hurt is my pride. Just make sure the safety bars are set properly on the power rack and that you have room to drop the bar on deads and overhead movements.
  6. Did an abbreviated recovery day, felt good. Overhead press 5x5 150x5 Long pause squat 135x5 225x3 Bench 45x20 135x15 185x5 Stretch and foam roll
  7. Volume day! Squat warm-up Squat 5x5 355x4 360x1 Dead lift warm-up Dead lift 3x5 365x2 370x1 T bar row 3x5 215x2 220x1 Bench warm-up Bench 5x5 250x1 255x4 Had more grip issues today but still got the bar up, thinking of adding timed holds midweek.
  8. Started Gene Wolfs Sword and Citadel, really looking forward to the conclusion of this series as I have no idea what's going to happen next.
  9. In that case I'd use the same general abilities but tweak them. Like say a force field ability, one brothers could reflect laser blasts back at the enemy showing a more aggressive, darker side. While the others might just absorb the blasts strengthening the shield showing a more gentle character.
  10. Depends, are the characters drastically different? If so then the different powers would make sense. Even if they are similar I'd give them some unique abilities, just cause it will make writing more fun.
  11. Read it like you would a book of mythology or history, it's complicated to follow the names of everything and I got lost a fair bit because I could never get the different branches of elves straight. I still enjoyed it just don't try to read it like a novel when it's really a history.I just started Shadow and Claw by Gene Wolfe, I think the main character is insane.
  12. Just finished The Lord of the Rings and about half way through The Silmarillion. This had to be the third or fourth time I've gone through LotR and the second time reading The Simarillion. So much love for these books
  13. Max effort day! Weight in pounds Squat warm-up Squat 1x5 415x1 Dead lift warm-up Dead lift 1x5 405 fail (got 3) Bench warm-up Bench 1x5 290x1 Grip failed on the deads, thinking of adding some grip stuff to my midweek lift. Other then that pretty strong lift, still chasing that 300 for 5 bench.
  14. I'd get rid of the ones that don't have strong nostalgia value attached, nothing wrong with keeping a few treasures around even I'd you don't/can't play them anymore. As for the impulse regret, maybe set a limit of 1 a week or 1 every two weeks. This will make you choose the ones that you really value.
  15. Volume day today! All weight in pounds. Squat warm-up (sets of 1-3 till working weight) Squat 5x5 355x5 Dead lift warm-up (same as squat) Dead lift 3x5 365x3 T bar row 3x5 215x3 Bench warm-up (also same) Bench 5x5 250x2 255x3
  16. Your lower body will always be stronger then your upper body. Even the strongest people in the world have a better raw squat then raw bench press. So just keep raising the resistance on both upper and lower body. Also if your goal is weight loss make sure you have your diet dialed in. Otherwise you're not going to see the results you want
  17. Hello nerd fitnes and welcome to my log! I've always loved lifting and can't wait to share some milestones and struggles with everyone. I'm looking to do my first power lifting comps this year so my training is revolving around the big 3. I've been running the Texas method for a while now (6 months maybe?) and loving it. I have previously run strong lifts 5x5 and 5/3/1, loved those to. I also train judo so don't be shocked if some grapply stuff sneaks into the log! Most recent lift was max effort day Dead lift warm-up Dead lift 1x5 400x5 Squat warm-up Squat 1x5 415 fail (got three) Bench warm-up Bench 1x5 285x5 Normally I squat before dead lifts so I'm blaming the change in routine for the miss. The deads flew up though so I'm very happy about that.
  18. Hey everybody, heavyink here, just joined up and pretty stoked. I'm 25 and been lifting since high school, really starting to get into power lifting and looking to compete in 2015. I've also been training judo for 4 or 5 years, I can't remember which, and prior to that I wrestled from 8th grade through high school. I love fantasy books, lifting heavy weight, and star wars. Have a good day folks!
