  1. There's an interesting discussion of a theory of willpower failed to replicate ... http://forum.beeminder.com/t/ego-depletion-studies-fail-to-replicate/2006 If I understand it correctly, the theory that "we have a limited supply of willpower" has failed to replicate. We apparently don't get exhausted mentally in the same way that we do physically - or rather, it has not been reproduced that we do get mentally exhausted. It gets a bit confusing... A third model of willpower is that willpower works like a muscle only if you believe it does2. If you think that resisting a cookie will make you slack off later, then you’re more likely to eat the cookie in hopes of saving willpower for working later, or to slack off if you’ve already done well by resisting the cookie. If you don’t believe in willpower as an exhaustible resource, then the cookie has no effect on slacking off. In this case, you don’t generate the excuses which sap willpower. But it makes for a good jumping off point on how we are not stuck with only the willpower we have at the moment. Hope this is coherent.
  2. Hi Will. It may or may not help, but I had a horrible time sleeping thru the night and was always tired - my wife claimed that I snored, too. When I ended up waking myself up with snores a few times, I went to a sleep clinic and was diagnosed with sleep apnea. I now use a CPAP machine every night, and sleep much much better. It may not apply to you, but submitted for your consideration. --B ps: a long term goal for me is to get off the machine
  3. I'm 53; used to be a gym (nautilus) coach, and used to do Tai Kwan Do. Love lifting weights and rowing, but have been stalled - dormant? - for several years. After reading the descriptions, I think I'm aiming for Ranger. For the long term: I'm carrying "an extra five year old", and want to lose that. 220# is somewhere near ideal. Finally use a budget for more than three months at a time!
  4. My goal for the next six weeks is two weight workouts a week. The main reason is as a present for my wife - six weeks from now I will have been married to the most excellent woman <air guitar rift here> for 30 years. I will also be cutting out diet cola. This will be HARD FOR ME because I drink lots of it and it's free at work. Just learning about the guilds - warrior? ninja? create a new guilde? we'll see.
