  1. Dude, glute-ham raises and natural leg curls?

There isn't a single exercise that hits the hamstrings harder than the glute-ham raise. Not even deadlifts.

I don't have experience with that movement, but yes, that too.

Unrelated: are you a Reddit user? I feel like I've seen someone on /r/bodyweightfitness whose name is a long sequence of numbers that starts with a 16, is that you?

  2. You also have knee-dominant, hip-dominant, and core. Knee dominants would classify as squats and lunges (which fall under what you specified as push legs). Hip dominant would be good mornings and romanian dead lifts (which you could do with dumbbells). Legs would be mostly pushing, I think, as in real life you have no reason to pull something with your legs. The effects of a leg curl on the hamstring could be replicated with a hip dominant motion, which also works on your lower-back. A good book to check out is power training by robert dos remidios. http://www.menshealth.com/powertraining/. Correct me if I am wrong, though :)

I guess the only exercises I really consider to be a leg pull would be deadlifts and sprinting (when done with proper form). Hamstring dominant exercises.

  3. What we eat or don't eat in the morning has some effect. Overall, though, it's not about what you eat in a single meal, it's about what you eat on a daily and weekly basis. That being said, a banana smoothie would probably be fairly sugary and not leave you very satisfied. Scrambled eggs have a lot of good fat and protein to keep you full and energized.

  4. Cool challenge, thanks for getting this together guys, you rock! I do have a question though..

Is this just a one-time thing or are we keeping up with our total for a determined amount of time? Or do I have till the end of the week to try to get my AMRAP as high as I can?

You have until the deadline, which will likely be this Sunday, to get your numbers as good as you can :)

  5. Are you all ready for the next challenge?

Ryan Sannar and myself were trying to come up with ideas for the second challenge when it hit us -

What is an assassin all about?

    Stealth and speed.

    Assassins, your challenge is this:

    1. Pick a variation on squats and push-ups that is appropriate for your skill level. Pick a variation that is challenging, but not impossible.

    2. Perform this circuit:

    3 rounds of

    2:00 Squats

    2:00 Push-Ups

    1:00 Rest

Each round should be As Many Reps As Possible (AMRAP). As many squats as you can do in 2 minutes, then as many pushups as you can do in 2 minutes, rest for a minute, and repeat two more times.

    The Reward

This is a detail we're still working on. It will likely be similar to the last challenge, something along the lines of +1 STR and +1 DEX. Once again, this we're still working on, but this will be amended shortly.

As this challenge is being done on an individual basis and we want to keep the spirit of the squads alive, the squad of the winner (or winners) will also receive a small reward.

    Tracking

I've created a very rudimentary spreadsheet. Simple, but it should get the job done (feel free to spice it up or make it more functional, I'm not very gifted with google docs :) ).

In the field for reps, enter the total from your workout. For example, if I did 20 squats in the first 2 minutes, 15 in the second, and 15 in the third, I'd enter 50 as in the Squat Variation Reps field.

    Advice

Please, folks, we're going for "speed" here and all, but don't get too crazy! While we are emphasizing speed, good form and injury avoidance should be your first priority! Know the difference between challenging yourself and endangering yourself!

    One Last Note

I'm sorry that it took all day for this challenge to come together and that the kinks are still being worked out! It's been a long week for myself and Ryan Sannar. You guys are awesome for bearing with us, and we wanted to say thanks a ton, sincerely. :)

With that out of the way, I wish you good luck, Assassins. Let's kick some ass.

  6. Physical appearance is a consequence of fitness. Form follows function. If you are getting stronger and faster, then you're going to start looking better and better.

It's absolutely possible to get stronger and become better at endurance. [[Site no longer exists]] has some really solid advice in this realm. I've been following this guy's blog for a few years after "meeting" him on the Runner's World forums. He's training to become a Navy SEAL officer, and to do so, he's practiced:

    • CrossFit
    • Calisthenics
    • Olympic Lifting (at a competitive level)
    • Ultramarathon running
    • Swimming
    • Gymnastics

Among other things. Guy's a beast in the gym and simultaneously trains to run 100 mile races in the mountains. I recommend checking out his website and his training log. He is very open with what he's doing to train, and I think if your goals are to get fast and get strong, GLGS is a valuable resource.

  7. Not a scam. Maybe not ideal for a fitness newbie, but not a scam.

While it's not necessarily a "scam," BeachBody, the company that produces Insanity, P90X, etc. does operate a sort of pyramid scheme. It's not a necessity to get a hold of their products, but it absolutely exists and does help them generate a large portion of their revenue.

  8. HEY GUYS, WE'RE MAKING AN AMENDMENT TO THE HANDSTAND CHALLENGE!

We realized that we're about two weeks in and the closest team has what, 5 hours? At this rate it'll take the entire 6 weeks to get to 24.

Because of this, we're amending the challenge so we can start doing new stuff. Instead of seeing who can get to 24 hours first, we're seeing who can get the most time by Sunday, May 13th. Then, we will have a new challenge that starts this Monday!

  12. I'm looking for a book for my mom for mother's day.

My mom is into interesting non-fiction. She really likes books with a sociological focus, too. She also really likes books about dog/cats/pets/animals in general, like Marley and Me and what-not.

A few books I know she's read and liked are Angela's Ashes, Sarah's Key, and Rats: Observations On The History And Habitat Of The City's Most Unwanted Inhabitants.

I know this is kind of all over the place but if you have any recommendations I'd totally appreciate it.
