  1. No run today, as we are shifting our long run to tomorrow cause it's my wife birthday and she wants to run. Seemed fair to me. No written progress on my module, though I've got a few ideas rolling around for foes as there are lots of bots/Mecha types to be sorted as well as carnivorous plants!!!! Quotes that struck me The myriad rocks stretched on and slightly jagged the horizon, and all day there came no glimpse of the pale-blue mountains. That evening from his dwindling provision of wood Alveric made another fire; its little flame going up alone in that waste seemed somehow to reveal the monstrous loneliness. He sat by his fire and thought of Lirazel and would not give up hope, though a glance at those rocks might have warned him not to hope, for something in their chaotic look partook of the plain that bred them, and they hinted it to be infinite. ... And how the horns of Elfland blew over the barrier of twilight, to be heard by any ear in the fields we know, I cannot understand; yet Tennyson speaks of them as heard "faintly blowing" even in these fields of ours, and I believe that by accepting all that the poets say while duly inspired our errors will be fewest. So, though Science may deny or confirm it, Tennyson's line shall guide me here.
  2. Knocked out a good 5 miler this morning - sadly no rain Last night' quote from The King of Elfland's Daughter: for it is ever the way of witches with any two things to care for the more mysterious of the two Another night with a glass of vino 2/5
  3. Me? I'm a runner mostly - 5 marathons, a dozen or so half-marathons, and a smattering of other race distances. Been here (on and off) since 2011 or 12 I think. What guild / guilds are you interested in?
  4. Ran a lovely 4 miler this morning, seems we need to get up/out the door earlier so my wife can get into the office for her 8am meetings... oops Had wine with dinner last night so 1/5 enjoyed. The King of Elfland's Daughter continues to entertain though the language is a touch more floral than I like in my books. I feel sort of bad for the characters as they're not relating / understanding each other, which I'm guessing is part of the point. Alveric is expecting Lirazel to just adapt but isn't helping her do so. While Lirazel just wants to continue doing things like she did in the Elflands. Think there is a lesson in there ...
  5. 3 months and no scouts? Guess we're all out running, swimming, or biking
  6. To quote the great LL Cool J I been here for years now that you've got that ear worm ... onto the main event! Goal 1 - Avenue of Giants Half-Marathon Keeping up the training and running the race! A minimum of 2 midweek runs plus a long run on the weekend Goal 2 - Reduce Booze 5 drinks per week, minimize the each day drink Goal 3 - Finish and Release RPG content I've beenn working on an ICRPG module called A Port in A Space Storm, and I wanna get it released by end of the challenge Goal 4 - Keep Reading I need to keep reading and expanding my knowledge base Just finished David Edding's The Elenium trilogy and moved on to The King of Elfland's Daughter by Lord Dunsany. This is the list of recommendations I have currently - not sure I'll read all of them but definitely worth look into Black Easter by James Blish The Night Land by William Hope Hodgson Star of the Unborn by Franz Werfel The Mote in God's Eye by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle Jean le Flambeur trilogy Imperial Radach trilogy Revenger trilogy Book of the New Son Culture novels by I.M. Banks Eisenhorn Omnibus Ravenor omnibus The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester Random Acts Of Senseless Violence by Jack Womack Stand On Zanzibar by John Brunner Startide Rising (David Brin) Heart of the Comet (David Brin and Gregory Benford) Hyperion (Dan Simmons)
  7. Welcome! I relocated you to the current challenge area
  8. Sorry I had to get the sampler but it is much cooler here in San Francisco than where most of y'all are
  9. So having enjoyed Zombies, Run! previously I have to inquire are you using the sprint option? If so how's it going?
  10. Wednesday's 5 mile run went well ... Thursday's 3 mile ended just short due to my stumbling over a curb and banging up my knee on the sidewalk ... ugh Nothing broken, save skin, thankfully. Still a touch tender and definitely sore but that'll pass.
  11. We knocked out a 3 miler this morning which was good - 11m30s pace , probably could've run faster but also wanting to make sure we have it in the tank for later in the week runs -- 5 miles tomorrow and 3 on Thursday. Tried to bake some broccoli rabe last night and FAILED miserably as it tasted mostly burnt ... but still we tried. Book wise I've swapped to a RPG book (Sci Punk) as Dresden isn't doing it for me currently. I'm sure I'll return to the urban fantasy Chicago soon just not right yet.
  12. 9 mile on Saturday was interesting as we got out later than usual -- forgot how much more intense it can be to run in full sun, might have to start running with a hat or something The Present is going alright, definitely tough to put down the black mirror but am trying which means it'll get easier and easier
  13. Last night's MotW session went well -- the players had a clear path forward and went after the mystery! We will be rolling over into the next session with this mystery so it'll likely be (4) 2hr sessions which isn't HORRIBLE for our first attempt at MotW Ran 5 miles this morning - pace was 11m30s which isn't too bad. I've a feeling we'll be getting faster with another round of marathon training.
  14. Just a checking in. Had a quip but it got eaten by the interwebs
  15. We push into the second quarter of 2022 with the Theme of the Present! I hear you saying "But but S5 what does that mean?" For me Theme of The Present is about being more in the moment, spending less time on my phone, trying to connect with things around me vs though interweb -- though the web is also real just a touch too addicting. alright that is all carry on!
  16. Had a work trip to/from Dallas which went alright -- looks like I'm Covid free which is even better. Ran 8 miles yesterday. Legs were a little unhappy but got into the groove of it after a few miles. San Francisco Full looks like it will be our next marathon -- need to see if I can find a half marathon to schedule into the plan Upping the veg during my trip was tough but I tried Reading on a plane was done as was some Monster of the Week prep
  17. More like rather than kaiju UPDATE! Did a 3 miler today and boy are my legs tired. It was slow jog at a 12m51s pace I went out for pizza with an acquaintance who's becoming a friend so my veggie / fruit in take was absolutely JUNK ... oops I've got to go to Dallas tomorrow so I'm hoping to enjoy Grave Peril while on the way there. We are playing the second part of the inital mystery of our Monster of the Week game tonight! The Hunters are engaging with a trio of ghouls in a grave yard which should be interesting
  18. Greeting Nerd Fitness Well the theme of marathon is wrapping up and well I finish the Oakland Marathon on Sunday. It was not the fastest I've run one but was not my worse either. Official time was 5hr55min53sec - yes my wife gave me grief about those 2 seconds! So a new theme must be brought to the forefront as we leave the theme of marathon behind - or perhaps we continue it... I'm not sure yet, but I know what I'm gonna do for this challenge - so let's get to that! QUEST 1 - Keep Moving Marathon is over but that doesn't mean we stop running. Taking a few days to recover and should be running again soon. My wife is seriously considering the San Francisco full in July so we'll look into training and such We'll likely keep with 3-midweek run and 1-weekend long run QUEST 2 - Fruits and Veggies Food game has gotten kind of junky as we burn so many calories during marathon training - so time to focus up on more greens and fruits! QUEST 3 - Read More! Hope to finish Grave Peril and move into Summer Knight by the end of this challenge QUEST 4 - Monster Hunting My RPG group has started Monster of the Week with me being the Keeper (aka GM/DM) so I'm gonna focus efforts on that. Hopefully with mystery prep and after action reports posted here
  19. huh ... seems I missed updating this thread ... oops ... so recap? recap! Goal 1 - Keep Training success! even ran a half-marathon last weekend in 02:31:11 -- definitely not my fastest half but ran it with my wife and that was great Goal 2 - FOOD mixed bag, eating too much healthy "junk food" (clif bars etc) as it has been tough to down enough food Goal 3 - Listen and Respond going well here - the half with my wife felt like a Goal 4 - Read I made it thru Fool Moon and on to Grave Peril - with a detour into the RPG Monster of the Week as that is likely the next game my group will be playing (with me running it)
