  1. So this week actually ended out pretty good! I missed my Monday workout and my Tuesday interval training run. But I made up my run on Saturday despite being out of town and staying at a hotel. I woke up early on Saturday, ate breakfast and did my run and it felt really good to be able to do that while I was traveling. I wanted to make up for Monday too but I wasn't able to do it... I went to Schlitterbahn and went tubing down the river in San Antonio all day with some friends and when we got back to the hotel I was WIPED! (one of my friends at one point had offered to go to the gym in the hotel with me but we both changed our minds when we got back, it was a long day haha) I do feel good about the week though. I ate good for my lunches, (also ate out a few times while out of town, but it was out of the norm) I gave myself sufficient rest/relax/reflection time and got almost all of my workouts in despite the craziness that ensued. The new workout routine is definitely keeping me challenged which I like. However, I do want to broaden my horizons a little bit, I don't want to just keep doing the same thing. But I don't know enough different kinds of workouts to keep it mixed up. Any suggestions to add to the full-body workout routine I'm doing would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all of the support you constantly give me, I hope I can do the same for you.
  2. Sooooooo I'm back from the tour, and it went pretty well but it was definitely very challenging to both stay healthy and fit. It was only four days so it's not like I would've lost any massive amount of progress but it was still challenging nonetheless. The biggest challenge has been continuing since I've been back... I've missed monday and tuesday and will have to make them up this weekend or I will officially be off track. I forgot to take pictures of the food we ate but for the most part we had lettuce wraps with cooked chicken or beef, shredded cheese and tomatoes. For snacks we had bananas, strawberries, trail mix and the occasional granola bar. I'll tell you a little about the tour below, most of the photos below were taken by our photographer CeeCee Hood who also wrote up a blog post about the tour here: http://www.mynameisceece.com/#!Rather-Be-Dead-Than-Cool-2015-Tour/c2jq/55c02a2d0cf2dce5af67eaaa First, I'll tell you a little bit about our stage props which was honestly very exciting but also very stressful. They were made by myself and our keyboard player JD and neither of us are necessarily good at crafts or being handymen. We bought some hardwood plywood, neon fluorescent paint, nuts, bolts screws, 2x4's for the legs with hinges and ropes and used JD's dad's tools (a Skilsaw, screwdriver) to make these. Hope that Rebel Cutebug would be proud haha. She's made some pretty awesome crafts that she's posted about here that my wife and I admire. We wanted the end result to be colorblocked mountains that we would put on either side of the stage and we would light them in the back with can lights and in the front with UV/Black lights First we cut the plywood into two big triangles and two small triangles and painted them pink and green Then we overlapped them and drilled three bolts on each set to make them look like mountains. We put the hinges and 2x4's on the back for the legs. This is how they looked on stage (kind of) during the tour. It ended up adding a lot to our set. Some people came up to us after the show in San Antonio and told me they thought they were made of glass. (which means they looked way cooler than I thought they did haha) Ideally, in the future we will have the lights programmed into a DMX controller so we can have the lights flicker/strobe at certain points during our sets. The tour was so much fun. The above photo was the first show in Dallas. The crowd was probably the least receptive to us at this date but it was still a ton of fun! Before I dive too far into this I want to add that the tour was with a headlining band that I truly love and respect called "Forever Came Calling" they were the nicest people (all the bands on the tour package were) and they taught us a lot of things. It was a dream. We got to meet a lot of new fans we've made online in the last year which was possibly the best part of the tour for me. The shows were a workout in and of themselves, we do A LOT of moving around and a lot of jumping and interacting with our crowds. (we did the bernie during our last song of the set at our homecoming show in Austin haha) In San Antonio we stopped and did a little photoshoot with the extra time we had. (Sidenote: we were originally not supposed to play the San Antonio date but Forever Came Calling asked the promoter to put us on anyways so we got to play, it was the coolest thing ever) That guy with the backpack jumped onto the stage during our last song of the set for some reason. Maybe to crowd surf? San Antonio had a pretty small crowd though so I'm not really sure what he was trying to do haha In between sets there wasn't much to do so we got much needed rest or played car games or music (that's my beautiful wife with the pink hair, we were referred to as the "Cotton Candy Couple" a lot on the tour haha) Sorry for the long post, I hope you guys enjoy the photos and the read. I know a good portion wasn't fitness related but this is a part of my fitness journey too so I figured I would include it and I thought you guys might enjoy seeing/reading about it. We will eventually release a podcast video that will include a lot of the footage from this tour and I will probably post a link at somepoint. I'm going to continue my journey now, hope you're doing well The crew (minus CeeCee who is behind the camera)
  3. Hey guys, my name is Jeremy and this will be challenge number two for me. Starting a tad late but I'm already well on my way towards my goal. In my first challenge, my main goal was to obtain what I considered a healthy lifestyle and while I'm still implementing new changes to my eating and fitness habits I've made a LOT of progress. My main goal for this challenge now that I have what I feel to be a good foundation is STRENGTH. I've been a musician since high school but lifting and moving gear has always left me extremely exhausted. Being the bass player I have some of the heaviest equipment and have always felt like I was the weakest of any group I was a part of. Today I have the heaviest gear I have ever owned and it's time that I stepped up to the plate and grew my confidence and strength so that I don't "purposefully" grab all of the lightest gear or have to ask for help all the time. That being said here are my mini-quests that will help me work towards that goal. Goal#1 - Three full-body workouts a week. The challenging part will be doing this while traveling or touring. For instance, we go on tour tomorrow and I won't be back home 'til Sunday. Most of the band is aware of my goals and have similar goals, we call it "Hard Bod-ing" or "Hard Bod 2015" So rest assured I still plan to workout while on tour. I began with the BBWW from the Nerd Fitness blog and my new workout will be similar but will be more challenging on the arms. My last workout was this: 3 circuits of 25 squats 13 lunges (per leg) 15 elevated push-ups (I use my coffee table for this) 5 pull ups I plan to increase the reps or difficulty of the workout each week. A: 18 workouts (+3 STR, +2 DEX) B: 15-17 workouts (+2 STR, +1 DEX) C: 11-16 workouts (+1 STR) F: 10 or less (nothing) Goal#2 - Meal prep healthy paleo meals for lunches every Sunday We are meal prepping for the tour tonight but this should also be a weekly thing. It's something my wife and I have tested out a couple times and honestly love, it saves so much time and money too which is a bonus. A: meal prep 6 weeks (+3 CON) B: meal prep 4-5 weeks (+2 CON) C: Meal prep 1-3 weeks (+1 CON) F: no weeks (nothin') Goal#3 - 20 minutes Interval Training two times a week Strength is a goal but so is endurance and stamina. I jump around on stage, A LOT! By the end of our set, I'm normally exhausted and there's a big group vocal thing we do at the end of our finishing song. I need to be able to sing long extended notes with good breath capacity. Interval training has been great for that so far and I want that to continue to get better. My goal here will be to actually be running the whole time. I normally start walking after about 85%-90% sprints... A: 12 runs (+3 STA, +2 DEX) B: 6-11 Runs (+2 STA, +1 DEX) C: 3-5 runs (+2 STA) F: less than three (nothin') Personal Goal: Time Management and Stress Reduction I'm going to give myself two avenues here. Things have been getting insanely busy and I'm having a really hard time managing my time and it's starting to give me some pretty bad anxiety and stress. I bought a Passion Planner which I'm really excited about so my goal here will be one of these two things DAILY: Take 15-30 minutes each day, plan/update my planner OR Take 15-30 minutes a day to relax, meditate, stretch, breath, do yoga, just some time to think really so that I'm not driving myself insane. A: 30-42 days (+2 WIS) B: 22-29 days (+1 WIS) C: 10-21 days (+0 WIS) F: less than 10 (nothin') All in all, I am making progress, it's been going REALLY great. I posted a two month progress photo in my last challenge and I'm starting to feel addicted. I can't wait to see what three months will look like, four months, five months and so on. If you'd like to follow my bands journey please follow us on our socials or my socials. I'll be posting a lot about it here as well - www.facebook.com/shadowofwhales www.twitter.com/shadowofwhales www.instagram.com/shadowofwhales www.youtube.com/shadowofwhalesband
  4. That table is freaking AWESOME! I need to show this to my wife, she loves doing crafts like that.
  5. So I suppose the challenge is over. Here is my recap: WEEK 6 Goal 1 - Run 10 minutes a day 5 days a week. (30 days minimum) I missed ONE day out of the six weeks so I suppose I get a B for this, which is painful haha because I only missed one. Goal 2 - NO SODA for six weeks.. I had ZERO sodas for six weeks and I feel great about it! so I get an AGoal 3 - Workout 3 times a week. (BBWW) again, I missed only one workout out of the six weeks so I suppose I'm getting a B for this too. Honestly, I'm sad I got B's for goals 1 & 3 but I know I did my best and I know that I made HUGE progress towards living the lifestyle of eating right and working out/staying healthy/fit and I'm very happy with it. I took a photo this morning in the mirror because today marks two months (roughly) since I started (or more accurately, two months since I took a 'start' photo)
  6. Week five recap: Nothing much to report here it was a normal week, I guess the thing to report would be the fact that it is now my normal week and it only took four/five weeks for it to become "normal". The workout is getting easier so maybe time to up the weight? I don't know... The band is even talking about how we are going to keep up with workouts while we are on the road in late July and myself and our keys player, JD, are going grocery shopping the day before our trip to cook and meal plan. I'm pretty excited. If we can pull it off on this small tour we can do it on larger ones too. I'm very excited and it's going to be a lot of fun We will be in San Antonio on August 1st though it's not shown in the photo above, if any of you guys happen to live in Texas and are around it'd be awesome to meet you in person. Meal planning will be a bit of a challenge as our pockets became $800 emptier after Chuy (the van in the photo below) had his radiator blow out... ACK!! But I'm sure we will be able to make it happen. I've kept up with my soda challenge and I'm having less and less coffee each week. This week I'm having about 1/4 of a 16oz cup (or less) as opposed to the one cup a day I started this challenge with and next week I'm going to test having ZERO caffeine for a whole day! also very excited about that. Something that has been REALLY getting to me the last couple of weeks is FOOD. Food is not a part of my challenge so I give myself a little leniency, however it's still something on my mind and even more so my wife's mind. She watched "Fed Up" a documentary about how terrible food corporations such as Coca Cola and Kellogg's are and it was really eye-opening to her. Makes it pretty obvious how important the Paleo Diet is and also incredibly scary how I've been trained since the day I was born to be okay with unhealthy foods. I'm blessed in that I have a metabolism that keeps me from feeling and seeing effects of bad foods/beverages in my body.(at least for now) But honestly it's really, incredibly discouraging... I'm in an in-between stage where I know pretty much everything I ever ate growing up was terrible for me but not knowing what's necessarily good for me and not having a source to find it. The grocery store is even more discouraging because everything familiar is bad for me, even the "healthy options" like Lean Cuisines, Protein Bars, Gluten free products and all of the sort of thing that everyone told me was better for you but actually isn't. I can't knowingly eat it now knowing that it will catch up to me soon (I'd give myself a generous 10 years maybe before I start seeing the damning effects) but don't necessarily know what to do about it other than try to completely change to a Paleo Diet that I might enjoy far less and will pay significantly more money for... I know this probably seems childish but I don't know any better unfortunately... Your advice and encouragement is supported on this subject...
  7. I have no idea, I wish there was a way to track that haha. Thanks for the encouragement, I've been absent from the forums as of late as well.
  8. Week four recap: This would be the first week I've legitimately missed a day of working out and running since the start. Can't say I'm not disappoint but also am giving myself the benefit of the doubt. My wife's birthday was this weekend which made it pretty busy. I did still get some physical exercise and cardio when we went canoeing for an hour on Saturday and did a lot of swimming on Sunday but they weren't true workouts so I'm not going to count them. I missed Monday and wasn't quite able to make it up over the weekend like I wanted to, I probably could have but I just didn't... This will be my first B for goals 1 and 3. I did however stick to my no soda goal and am giving myself less coffee (2/3 of a cup instead of a full cup) I'm going to continue to give myself less and less coffee and hope that will absolve me of caffeine addiction completely.
  9. Hey guys, SO sorry I haven't been posting here. But WORRY NOT, I have still been keeping up with my goals and will do a recap on this post. Reason I didn't post so much is because frankly I wasn't online nearly as much as I normally am. My band and I myself were getting ready for the Vans Warped Tour coming through Texas. I was volunteering at the Houston date with a non-profit called HeartSupport on Friday and then my band was playing on the Ernie Ball stage at the San Antonio date on Sunday. HeartSupport is a non-judgemental online community where kids can go and share their stories and their struggles but they can also watch videos of their favorite band members telling their stories of upbringing. Their goal is to unite the scene between fans and bands so that no music fan has to struggle alone. While I was there on Friday I got to meet this awesome young girl and her mom. Her father recently passed away and she struggles most with anxiety and self-harm. She is 8 months clean from using razor blades to vent and her mom (from what I can tell) is really supportive and loving towards her. They are both the coolest people!!! I wanted to encourage her and I told her she isn't alone and that she is doing great! (I mean 8months clean is a FEAT!!!! So cool) Her and her mom later came back to the HeartSupport tent and she had me sign a big piece of paper that was titled "People who saved my life" that was a really huge moment for me, I don't believe I had any part in it personally, I think she is the one saving her life but it meant a lot to me that she felt encouraged when we talked. Our set on Sunday was a freaking blast! We had a great crowd but holy crap it was freaking hot! People were passing out left and right due to dehydration and heat exhaustion. (There was free water there but I don't think people were drinking near enough) Our keyboard player was almost one of those victims. We got to meet a lot of awesome kids and hear some great stories. That's my awesome wife to my right (your left) in the blue tank top she's a freaking cutie! OH! And if you want to see more photos and details of the weekend our photographer posted them on her blog: www.mynameisceece.com It was an amazing weekend but very physically trying as we got very little sleep and were out in blistering heat from about 10am to 8pm or later. (well the sun started letting up close to 5 or 6 so those last couple of hours weren't so bad) All of this being said, I kept up with my HIIT goals and my BBWW goals and despite forgetting my coffee on sunday and suffering a caffeine headache, I still had NO SODA! I'm really proud of myself because I REALLY wanted some haha. I did however skip my workout and run this Monday because I was running on a collective 6-8 hours of sleep over three days and I was exhausted from the weekend but will make it up on Saturday THIS weekend. I started my workouts on Tuesday and have been keeping up so things are still going great. Thank you all for encouraging me and keeping me going! Hope you enjoy this update
  10. Chin up man! Here's my evaluation of your recap. Goal 1 You tracked all meals aside from ONE for the entire week. Before this challenge you weren't counting calories for any meals am I right? Not only that but your average over the 6 days was 145 calories less than your goal for the week. And you gave yourself a GRADE C?! I feel sir that you are being too harsh, I'd say bump to a B. Goal 2 Fair, a grade B for missing one workout. Let's again look at life previous to the challenge though and realize how much progress you've already made. Goal 3 VERY NICE! not only did you bring healthy meals each day to work but they were all Paleo! Life goal: You've got three more weeks to finish that project but you only had one day to see your family, I'd say the decision you made was a good one. All round I say you did just about as good as you did last week. There is a reason it's called a six week CHALLENGE. You had some cheat meals on Sunday night but today is a new day and this week is a new week. You've seen how great you did week one and on week two, now lets up the ante and see if we can't get two or three A's this week. Slow and steady wins the race. In regards to the scale, remember what they said at the beginning. Weight is fickle and unpredictable, it doesn't go as fast or slow as people may want it to and there's a million factors that might contribute to a weigh-in. You're sticking to your process and that's great, keep sticking to your goals and challenging yourself to do better each week and the weight will come off as a result of the process. That's why you changed your mini-goals in the first place, right? What makes it worth it? Several things I can see from your post. 1) Whenever you kill a day with all three of your goals, it's obvious from your language that you are psyched, you're pumped! You feel GOOD. Feeling good beats feeling crappy any day, am I right? 2) It's given you and your son something to do together competitively, which honestly sounds like a lot of fun. I would work out with my step-son but he's 5 years old haha. 3) You may not have lost weight this week but you've still lost weight and you're still losing weight. You've reached almost 20% of your goal from a little bit before the time you started this challenge. So clearly, it's working, but this week was a slower week and that's okay, some days are diamonds. You're doing great, all you need to do now is round off some of the rough edges. The point is that you're making progress and that you are still moving forward. Don't get discouraged now, keep going!
  11. I failed the combat feat... though I did truly try to make it happen, I will have to make it up this week.
  12. Wow! Way to go! Improvement from last week and you killed the weekend!
  13. Sorry I was a little absent here this weekend, but promise I haven't been absent from my challenge! Friday: I didn't go on a walk or jog because it was raining but I did do interval training on the elliptical. It wasn't near as challenging as doing interval training outside so I'm excited to start that up again this week. Saturday: Because I missed Wednesday and because the BBWW schedule was off this week, I did a ten minute run warm up (on the treadmill, again not near as fun or challenging as outside) then the BBWW. Sunday I took a rest day to get ready for this week. WEEK TWO RECAP: I still ran (or in case of one day, walked) 5 days this week for at least 10 minutes if not more. I refrained from soda for a second week in a row, it always seems to be hardest on weekends. I did my BBWW three times this week. I'm still epically failing on the life quest... It keeps crossing my mind and I keep putting it off... Something I'm also pretty excited about is that it's officially been one month since I started trying diet and fitness routines and habits and I think I've made some progress so I will upload some photos later. There's not a big difference but there is A difference which I'm excited about. It's also not a huge deal because it didn't necessarily look like I was in bad shape before but I do feel a lot better about myself which I think is important.
