  1. I've been off these forums for a while because I've been at the Royal Australian Navy recruit school for the last 3 months. We finally passed out (graduated) last Friday! We got to do a big parade in front of our family and friends. The icing on the cake was I took out the dux of the intake award. Over the time I've learnt to march, tie ropes, stop leaks, fight fires, survive at sea, shoot weapons, get tear gassed, and pushups (lots and lots of pushups). Without a doubt its the hardest thing I've ever done in my life, but also the biggest sense of achievement, especially after coming from a boring desk job. I've learnt what I can accomplish when the chips are down and surprised myself at how much I've done. From here it's straight on to category training, which is basically my job specific training as a communicator, and getting @WarriorAmy and the kids moved down here as soon as possible.
  2. Coffee Rum Donuts Preferably all at the same time
  3. Ditching the self-loathing cycle after missing a couple of workouts or eating badly was what helped me level-up the most. Whenever I'd 'fall off the wagon' I used to tell myself, "Why bother getting back on, I've already failed so I'll just quit altogether and make a fresh start 'next week'". I'd second what others have said and try to just get back into it and not try to make up for lost time. Treat your time off as a good thing, allowing your body to rest and catchup with what you've been doing.
  4. After spending the last 8 years in crappy admin jobs, I've finally made the change I've always wanting and I'm joining the Navy in less than 2 weeks. If you're not sure if being a personal trainer is what you want to do, I'd say give it a go while not putting all your eggs in one basket. You'll soon figure out if you enjoy it enough to keep going. I know one personal trainer who is building his business, but still has a job doing nightfill at a supermarket to help pay the bills while he's still growing his business. My one piece of advice for dealing with any period of unemployment is to keep busy and try to keep some sort of routine. The last time I lost my job unexpectedly, the thing that helped keep my spirits up most was making sure I still got up everyday by 8 and going for a jog.
  5. Hey cool! This is exactly what I'm doing and keeps me motivated too. I'm enlisting in 2 weeks.
  6. Phwoar! That's like deadlifting me and my evil clone
  7. My wife and I did the Warrior Dash a few months ago and really enjoyed it. We didn't really train much, so we took it easy and walked most of it and had a great time. The only thing I'd say to watch out for is on our race there was a part of the track that ran through a shallow, muddy creek where they had dug holes of varying depths to trip people up. Not sure if that would be in your race, but just something that might be there but not listed as an "obstacle" to watch out for if your concerned about your knees.
  8. It's currently a balmy 11 degrees C here with a forecast max of 18. Could have something to do with being on the other side of the equator from the rest of you.
  9. Things that will always get progressively "worse" as I get progressively older: Games, Music, Movies, and Those Damn Young People
  10. One of the things that drew me most to paleo was not having to count calories. Every once in awhile I'll track what I'm eating over 3-5 days and average it out in terms of calories and macronutrients to see how its generally going and if there any tweaking I should make.
  11. Whatever your problem, my advice is always going to be: Rub some bacon on it ( )
  12. ... you watch Big Bang Theory and laugh at every "Bazinga!" .. oh wait, NO IT DOESN'T!
  13. My hobby is driving slowly around schools in a white unmarked panel van and pointing a big camera out the window. Please support me
  14. I'll be honest and say I've found WarriorAmy more and more attractive as she's gotten fitter (and I know she's felt the same about me as I've gotten fitter too). We both have more energy and confidence and thats hella sexy. What makes someone attractive is a combination of factors, and saying someone isn't attractive based on a single feature is like saying a particular car is a terrible purchase based on its colour.
  15. Hoorah for turning point! Good luck getting back on track with it all
  16. Well done on trying some barefoot running, I still haven't worked up the courage to go completely barefoot.
  17. MORE WAITING Just got a call letting me know that the medical came back from the Chief Medical Officer in Canberra. Having the plate in my wrist makes me a Class 4 (medically unfit), but in this case they've recommended issuing a waiver. On the downside, it means additional waiting as its up to the Navy to decide on whether or not to issue a waiver which I've been told will take around 2 weeks but I'm expecting at least a month. LEVELLING UP I know that when you're waiting for something the best thing to do is keep busy and not focus on it, "a watched pot never boils" and all that. So I've been doing a bit more in the way of at least maintaining fitness if not truly building up. Last week I focussed more on strength type activities and got in a few sessions using the new weights (barbell and dumbell set) that WarriorAmy bought for my birthday (I have the best wife!) Also got to go to a fitness class where we did a (heavily) scaled down version of the 300 workout which was fun for something different. This week has just had a sprint interval yesterday and not much else. I've been spending most of my time trying to get my media server pc setup just right. It's involved trying to learn alot about digital TV, networking etc, inevitably stuffing something up then rinse, repeat. Oddly been fun to do though.
  18. What an interesting read, I love seeing ideas that hadn't crossed my mind before. I've always been a bit overweight, but generally carried it fairly well so I've not dealt with being clearly labelled as "fat". I think it's definitely a great idea in creating greater awareness that your health and fitness are the most important thing, and weight loss may or may not be a side effect of that. It's similar fighting the kind of attitudes people have towards mental illness eg "Suffering from depression? Just cheer the hell up". I can see there are going to be people who live an unhealthy lifestyle, and as a result have become fat, who will dumb this idea down to "Being fat is OK, so I don't have to change anything" and use it as an excuse to continue their behaviour. But if people are determined not to change, they'll always find a way not to and the existence of the fat acceptance movement has little bearing on that.
  19. Holding Pattern I just found out from Defence Recruiting that they've received the medical review back from Canberra, but apparently another one of their doctors in Brisbane has to review it before they can advise me of the outcome. It's so terribly frustrating to know that the decision has essentially already been made, but I have to wait another 3-4 days before I find out if I'm in. I've been completely slack the last couple of days as my main motivation for my goals is based on me getting in.
  20. lol, not to mention amusement park themed innuendos, "Wanna see my tower of terror? *wink*" Woot!
  21. The obvious choice is Guile's Theme, it goes with everything
  22. I know my wife always prefers flowers at work over anywhere else. It's the whole getting to show them off thing.
