  1. Had to bring my car to the garage to get the tires changed. (Someday, I hopefully can do it myself again...) So, I worked from home before and afterwards. Not super productive though... Link's Quest - Working Out Worked out a bit. Still shoulder/back pain during push-/pull-ups. But ok. I try to do a little bit but not too much until I see the doctor next week. Moreover, I went for a 5 km run. Still far from being able to run without needing walking breaks... Daruk's Quest - Walking ... Urbosa's Quest - Low-calories & low-carb Yoghurt for breakfast, fried eggs and asparagus with a pretzel for lunch and tuna with zucchini and spinach for supper. Revali's Quest - Go ... Mipha's Quest - Drawing ... Side Quests ...
  2. Last acupuncture session today. I helped against the shoulder pain, but it's not entirely gone. Let's see what the orthopaedist says next week... Link's Quest - Working Out ... Daruk's Quest - Walking ... Urbosa's Quest - Low-calories & low-carb Ate a yoghurt for breakfast, salad with fried chicken for lunch and burger with chips and chicken wings for dinner. (And two cookies as a snack.) Not ideal, but not too bad overall. Let's see in which direction the scale tips tomorrow... Revali's Quest - Go Wen to the second Go meet-up. Played against an old acquaintance who I haven't met since she changed her study program. (And I won all three games. Yay!) Mipha's Quest - Drawing ... Side Quests ...
  3. A bit. My mum is quite sick and can't travel. So we'll probably have the registry office part near her and keep it relatively small. In the church ceremony, there'll be mostly my fiancee's family (who behave well) and my godmother. But nothing concrete is planned... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Went to the Go mme-up yesterday evening. So, nothing much else happend during the day. (Well, at work I had five different meetings and my mind was mush when I wanted to play Go.) And today was Worker's Day here in Germany (and, AFAIK, in mayn other countries). Spent the day at home being relatively acitve. Link's Quest - Working Out Worked out this morning including a 3 km run. Felt good overall, but I have pretty intense shoulder/neck pain. Tried to massage myself with a tennis ball, but it wasn't as sucessful as when I use it on my lower back. (And yesterday I finally registered for the 5.5 km run in June I want to participate in.) Daruk's Quest - Walking Went for a walk with my fiancee today and we played catch afterwards. Some easy 13000 steps today... Urbosa's Quest - Low-calories & low-carb Yesterday I ate a lot; espeically a lot of carbs: Yoghurt with otameal, a bagel with cheese, Schnitzel with chips, and two slices of bread as a late-night snack. However, I lost 100g between yesterday and today... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Today I ate "normally": scrambled eggs and bread with Obatzda (a Bavarian spread made from Camenbert, paprika and caraway) for breakfast. Yoghurt in the afternoon. And fried potatoes, veggies and salomon with Japanese seasoning for supper. (Plus half a chocolate bunny...) Revali's Quest - Go Went to the Go meet-up yesterday, but was too sluggish after work to "perfom". Mipha's Quest - Drawing ... Side Quests Still struggling to remember to do my breathing exercises... Started to read Flow by Mihály Csíkszentmihályi. I struggle a bit to read non-fiction at the moment. But I referenced it in my dissertation, so I guess I should read it at some point.
  4. Thanks! Nothing concrete... First, we'll try to find a new flat. Then we aim to do the registry office marriage early next year and the church wedding in spring. Maybe, we'll do one here in Munich and one in Poland... Ah, yes. I guess you have the instant ramen in mind? Google ramen and get surprised! Or 'udon', which is basically the same dish but with Japanese noofles instead of Chinese ones. Yes, I'm always good at planning! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My acupuncture session this morning was quite long. It's a weird feeling when the needles get stuck not only in the back but also in the neck. Unfortunately, the doctor wasn't very interested when I told her about my chest and neck pains from last week. It always feels rushed with her... I made an appointment with my orthopaedist for next week. Let's see what's his opinion is. Link's Quest - Working Out After getting home, I did Yoga with a few "proper exercises" mixed in. Daruk's Quest - Walking ... Urbosa's Quest - Low-calories & low-carb Ate yoghurt for breakfast, a meatloaf sandwich for lunch and potatoes with mixed veggies and smoked salmon for supper. Revali's Quest - Go Did quite a few Go problems during my commute to work and back. Mipha's Quest - Drawing ... Side Quests Played Rocket League in the morning instead of reading. Was kinda stressful. Tomorrow I'll read again...
  5. So... The last few days had been quite eventful. Overall I was pretty depressed and unmotivated. Additionally, I had pretty terrible pain in my chest, neck and back. Probably from working out too intensely. (Even though that shouldn't be the case with the kind of callisthenics I do...) So, I barely did anything during the last few days. Mostly playing Rocket League and reading. On the plus side: I proposed to my girlfriend and she said yes. Yay! (I did it more spontaneously on Thursday instead of the planned on Friday. ) I made ramen for the first time in many years and they turned out great. During my workout today I felt very good and I'm much more flexible after a few days of doing nothing. (Unfortunately, I have a bit of back pain right now, but I think I identified the movement that caused them.) When it comes to the challenge, I feel kinda tired. I want to do all the things I planned to do, but I'm absolutely not in the mood to think about it too much. I think I'll simply continue doing (or rather trying to do) all the things, but drop the tally marks. Focusing more on qualitative performance than the quantitative one.
  6. Good to hear that you handled the Saturday so well!
  7. Worked out in the morning. So far, it feels good to do that early before breakfast. But I probably have to make it a bit shorter to use less time. Unfortunately, I had chest pains throughout the day... I guess because of too many push-ups. I do them throughout the day à la greasing the groove. Nothing crazy, but apparently enough to cause tensions and pain. I guess, I have to stretch more... Moreover, in the afternoon I had a fit of depression and ate a whole bar of chocolate. 8. That's a good idea! At night I'm earing amber-coloured glasses, so reading is always a bit of a nuisance. But tomorrow I'll read a bit in the morning. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yesterday: Barbeque at my girlfriend's brother's house. Thankfully, the holidays are now over! Today: First "proper" day off work. In the morning my mind went into overdrive thinking about what I should/want to do. I worked out in the morning at 8 o'clock and it went quite well. I will try to push it up to 7:30. Then it'll be something I probably can do before work. And it feels good to "work" for my breakfast. Unfortunately, I had some muscle strains/cramps/tightness in my left hamstring my chest and my neck. The main culprits, as far as I can judge, are pull-ups: a movement that I'm absolutely not used to. Will have to observe... I ate the last chocolate bunny today. (Is that a thing outside of Germany and Austria...?) Combined with beer and sweet potatoes, staying "low-carb" was out of question. But at least I kept my calories in check. And in the afternoon I went for a 90-minute walk. (In total, 23000 steps today. Yay!) On a side not: Bought a sphygmomanometer to analyse my (in general low) blood pressure. Especially when I feel dizzy after exercising. Yesterday and today it was very warm in the sun, but the wind was quite chilly. Usually, that weather means that the cold air around my ankles and my kidneys lead to stomach cramps and diarrhoea. (My body is weird...) But these two days I had few to no problems. 9. At the moment... rather randomly. Once or twice a week I have to go to an office that 45 minutes via underground away. That's always a good opportunity to read (or play games...) And on the weekend I like to read for a couple of hours when I have nothing to do. But that's rarely the case. Sunday morning is, currently, the best time and the last few weeks I actually managed to read. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not much happened during the last two days. Visited family for Easter -- both of my girlfriend and myself -- and ate a lot. My workout today got me pretty winded, but maybe that's due to doing it right after a two-hour drive... 10. Been quite active today. I worked out in the morning before breakfast and it went well. My stomach wasn't too well after eating, but that's not necessarily due to the workout. (Will have to monitor...) Next week I'm on vacation and I'll try to work out as much as possible in the morning to see how I like it and how much time it takes. Around noon my girlfriend and I walked to a nearby park to play catch. My back and stomach weren't too happy when we arrived, but it went quite well. (Except for the fact that my girlfriend can through a football much better than me... XD) In the end, I clocked in with over 17000 steps today. Alas, the number hasn't increased after 15 o'clock... I also found out/realised how awesome potatoes are w.r.t. calories and carbs per total mass. I ate a large portion (250g of potatoes + codfish, salmon, cauliflower, carrots) for supper and still managed to achieve both diet goals. 12. The thing is: If I want to occupy myself with Go at all, I should definitely play one or two "serious" games per week. And the meet-up is more or less the only opportunity for that. The only thing I can realistically see is to work out in the morning. Doing stuff in-between is hard because we meet at a restaurant. But maybe I can do stuff at the office beforehand... My work schedule will change a bit in the next weeks. But afterwards, I'll try to find a bit more structure for my workouts. After all, most of my hobbies can be done anytime in-between. Only the workouts are a bit unwieldy (time-wise). Probably... Part of the challenge is, of course, to find out what I can do how often. Lore-wise definitely. But what would that mean with regard to exercise? Which sports/movements/activities would a Bard class do...? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Today was kinda useless. I left work a bit early to use the sunny day to do a few things. But after my workout, it was already 19 o'clock and I had to prepare supper. And I didn't do anything else... Moreover, my workout also caused quite a lot back pain today. On the plus side: I ate (subjectively) a lot and still hit both my diet goals. 13. Been to the Go meet-up again. Will be interesting how it'll affect my challenge performance if I go regularly. It makes me get home after 21 o'clock and I usually eat a (relatively) big supper there. So, effectively, I have to achieve everything in six days. But I don't want to adapt the challenge because of that... (And there's another meet-up at Thursday I want to attend...) 14. The most fun I ever had in an MCU film!
  15. *Haha* You're probably right! But with my back problems, I'm currently able to lift anything reasonably heavy. So, I see myself more in the "Strength, flexibility, functionality" category than in "Cross Training and General Fitness" at the moment. But a long-term goal is to transition a little bit to the Rangers... Yeah... Link is usually absurdly perfect. I'm always imaging a Link Class which is 40% Ranger, 40% Assassin and 40% Adventurer...
  16. Still... Thor... Right...? In which field/profession?
  17. Today I worked from home after my acupuncture session. I walked home, so the walking quest was easy today. I ate well, but a little bit too much bread. For supper, I tried to make żurek -- a Polish soup with sausages where the stock is made on the same idea/recipe as sourdough. Unfortunately, my girlfriend wasn't convinced... Was still tasty though! 18. A few weeks ago I started to play The Legend of Zelda - Breath Of the Wild again in Master Mode (i.e. in hard mode). I immediately fell in love again with this wonderful game. (Unfortunately, I lost my motivation to play after my vacation, mostly because it is much easier than expected.) And during the last few weeks while running through the woods I realised that Link is, more or less, my ideal fitness/health model. I want to be able to run, climb, carry stuff, fight, etc. Basically, I want to do be able to everything at least decently. Of course, with my back problems and my other health issues, that won't happen anytime soon. But I want to get a bit away from the training/exercise mindset and a bit more towards performing. In particular, I want to combine my callisthenics workouts (strength/stability) with my running training (endurance). At least, that's what I want to try during this challenge. Maybe I'll like it; maybe it's effective. Moreover, I want to continue a bit in the Thomas Frank mindset of three hobbies: one fitness related one, one entrepreneurial one and one skill-based one. I want to walk more (building up to hiking). Last challenge I tried to walk more often; this time I try to walk longer. I want to draw comics "seriously", but right now I do have neither the mental capacity nor the technical capabilities. So, I'll just try to do it at all. I want to get better at Go (ancient Chinese board game). And because of my recent obsession with Breath of the Wild, the theme of this challenge will be... Hyrule's Champions Link's Quest Working out every day I will split this in two: "Intense" workouts consisting of mostly upper body exercises and running; and "easy" workouts consisting of Yoga. (Well, Yoga is my shorthand for my combined warm-up and cool-down routine. It's more movement and less proper Yoga; but it's more of a Yoga mindset.) The goal is to do one of these each day; aiming for about 4 "intense" workouts per week. I'll track them separately, mostly to see when and how I move. If this works as planned, I'm in good shape for the 5k in June and maybe I can even start bouldering properly now that I can train with a pull-up bar. Daruk's Quest Going on an hour-long walk twice per week This should not only augment the more intense workouts but also serve as a way to clear my mind. Moreover, I want to listen to more podcasts and audiobook and walking is the perfect opportunity. I aim for at least 60 minutes, but I'll probably count 50-minutes walks, too, since I won't always find/walk sufficiently long routes. Urbosa's Quest Eating below 2000 kcal and below 130g of carbs Last challenges I lost about 1.3 kg, which is okay for a five-week period; especially considering I didn't eat as well as I wanted to. I'm in no hurry... So, I'll just continue what I did. Eat less calories and, addtionally, less carbs. (The latter for various reasons: additonal calorie control, concern about gluten, sucess in the past, etc.) 2000 kcal seems to be a nice bound. And with the carbs I want to go a little bit lower as last challenge. Not yet "low-carb" by any means, but an improvement. I aim to eat low-calorie daily, of course, but about 5 times per week is probably good enough. Revali's Quest Study/Play Go daily In order to improve at Go there are many different ways. Unfortunately, none is particularly enticing at this moment. I enjoy everything -- solving problemes, studying games, playing -- but nothing really hooks me at the moment. So, I'll just to do something for at least 15 minutes a day. No stress here, but actually doing it at least five times a week seems like a good goal. Mipha's Quest Drawing something As mentioned above, drawing is important to me, but I'm not good enough at the moment. So, I'll just try to do it at all. Side Quest Reading Finding a reasonable gaming routine Breathing Grip strength Some random things I want to keep in mind... Reading more "real" books... Finding a way to play video games without neglecting the challenge and without feeling guilt... Doing breathing exercises... Working on grip strength (both for pull-ups and for cracking nuts)... ------------------------- I'll plan to geet two rewards if I'm doing well in this challenge: The Breath of the Wild special edition artbook and a nice (expensive) bottle of whisky. Not sure about the exact goals I have to reach for this, but most likely whatever I mentioned above.
  19. Good question! Two years ago I had very good results using low-carb to lose weight. After I found out about my GI problems, mostly the fructose intolerance, it's a bit more complicated. Since I have to eat a breakfast consisting of mostly carbs and protein, I want to use low-carb as a supplement to control calories. And I want the lowered carb intake to improve my weight loss as I did in the past. Moreover, I want to limit gluten intake. I'm not 100% sure whether it is bad in and of itself for everyone (even with coeliac disease). But I want to reduce my wheat consumption if possible. (Again, because of my general GI problems.) Finally, eating low-carb makes it much easier to not eat sweets. So, eating low-carb is more a bonus at this point than the primary weight loss strategy. As a final note: I consider "low-carb" to be anything below 100g of carbs, which most people won't. (And anything between 100g and 200g I consider "normal-carb".) Depending on the sizes, this still allows for two to three portions of "carb foods".
  20. Long-term? Losing weight and then keeping my weight. At the moment I'm about 10 to 15kg overweight -- which isn't much, but which I should still get rid of. (Overall, I'm healthy (considering blood values etc.) but I don't like what I see in the mirror.)
  21. Ah, I don't think so. I'm not hating on myself; just acknowledging that things could be better. I'm happy with what I achieved during this challenge. But I think one should always try to do just a little bit better.
  22. Today has been quite lazy. I convinced my girlfriend that it's a good idea to spend more time without our mobile phones. So, today we didn't look at them until after our breakfast which we had at 11 o'clock. Because of that, I managed to read 80 pages of the Sarah Paretsky novel Burn Mark. In the afternoon we went for an hour long walk. Having eggs for breakfast and chilli for supper made it quite easy today to reach my diet goals. Later in the afternoon, I felt similarly sluggish as yesterday. Later, when doing dishes, I realised that I feel better. I also saw that the veins in my forearms were showing. So, from that, I deduce that my problems probably stem from low blood pressure. (I suffer from low blood pressure for a few years now and try to fix it with more exercise, cold showers and increased sodium intake.) If that's the case, the question is, why exercising (without overdoing it) makes my blood pressure drop... o.O Moving: Working out |||||||| - ||||||| - ||||||| - ||||||| - ||||||| Running ||||||| - ||||||| - ||||||| - ||||||| - ||||||| Dieting: +1 Low-carb ||||||| - ||||||| - ||||||| - ||||||| - ||||||| +1 Low-calories ||||||| - ||||||| - ||||||| - ||||||| - ||||||| Learning: +1 Walking ||||||| - ||||||| - ||||||| - ||||||| - ||||||| Drawing ||||||| - ||||||| - ||||||| - ||||||| - ||||||| Go ||||||| - ||||||| - ||||||| - ||||||| - ||||||| +1 Guitar ||||||| - ||||||| - ||||||| - ||||||| - ||||||| ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Challenge re-cap So, let's see how things went. Because of my vacation, I'll tone down my expectation a little bit. Moving Working out: 2.4 times per week Running: 1.6 times per week Working out should be done about 3 times a week, as we all know, but with bodyweight workouts, it should probably be a bit higher. In June I want to participate in a 5k, so running training should probably be done 3 times per week, too. In that regard, things went well overall, but should be improved a little bit. Diet Low-carb: 9/35 = 25.7% Low-calorie: 14/35 = 40% Eating well should be done, well, every day if possible. So, I should definitely do better. Eating low-carb isn't a primary goal, so a 25% rate is okay. But as calories in vs. out is the dominant factor in weight loss (as long as you eat healthy overall...) I should put more focus on that. I think a rate of at least 60% should be the goal. What I'm asking myself is, can I combine both scores in a meaningful way? Well, as a mathematician I know dozens of ways of combining these two ratios... But I'm not sure which one is the best to compute a "compound performance" that adequately refelcts what I want to measure... Learning Walking: 4.8 times per week Drawing: 1.4 times per week Go: 3.6 times per week Guitar: 5.8 times per week Walking 5 times a week is quite good. Substracting the 1.6 times per week I went running leaves us with 3.2 times walking. And since most of them were walk to the grocery store or similar things, I still need to take it a bit more seriously if I want to see walking as a hobby. Drawing didn't go well. I'm too much out of practice to see it as a hobby I can focus on seriously. I have to train much more before I can do so. I'll probably include it in the next challenge, but not as the "entrepreneurial" hobby. Studying Go over 3 times per week is okay in itself. But considering it is something I could do 15 minutes every day, it should be higher. I'm still unsure whether I'll want to attend one or two Go meet-ups per week regularly, but at least doing some minor form of studyng and/ord solving problems should really be done daily... Practising the guitar went very well. I won't include it in the next challenge, because, well, it isn't a challenge at the moment. But maybe it'll drop off rapidyl after the proposal... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So, overall things were okay, but could/should be better. The next challenge is already planned roughly, but some details are still missing...
  23. So... Running outside it is? Or another form of indoor cardio? Any ideas yet?
