  1. Joshua, I'm glad you came here asking for help. The previous advice is spot-on. I myself use to workout at the gym doing a typical body building split, back and bi's/chest and tri's. I'm sure we've all heard the routine before. I did progress and got stronger, but like you, I felt like I could be doing better. I stumbled across Strong Lifts 5x5 and never looked back. I'm now on an intermediate program, but we can talk about that later. Feel free to ask any questions. I'm sure there is someone on the boards who will have an answer or at least set you on the right path. Welcome to the Journey, you're not alone!! Jon(a.k.a. Mathillas)
  2. ^^^^This I had some shoulder issues on the incline bench due to not having done enough rows or other upper back exercises. Your chest will get tight and pull your shoulders forward. Even a small amount caused my left shoulder to "Pop" while lifting. I didn't do any chest exercises for a week while I focused on my back and rear delts to correct this issue. Don't forget to stretch afterwards!! Stretching helps so much.
  3. Thanks Gainsdalf! I'm really digging Madcow. So far, I've been able to keep progressing, but I know eventually the diet will get me and I'll have to maintain till I reach my goal weight, then bump up the calories a little.
  4. MY opinion would be to start counting your calories and walking. Build up your base level of fitness first. Then talk to your doctor. I was 315lbs when I started SL5x5, but I had no medical issues. Make sure you don't have any underlying health issues before you start. Your starting weight isn't really an issue. You see guys who are over 500lbs doing crazy amounts of kettlebell swings and other crazy stuff on biggest loser, so I think the program is fine at your weight, just make sure you're healthy first.
  5. MY personal experience was a mixed bag. I enjoyed the camaraderie of the box I was in, but I lost a lot of strength. I was able to do more push ups and power cleans the first 2 weeks than I could after 2 months. I think it's great for people who want to train for crazy endurance, but I quickly realized I love powerlifting a lot more than crossfit. To each their own!
  6. I'm in Brentwood, kind of late for this post too. I love to go hiking. I'd definitely would love to get a group together to hit some trails. I heard MT Diablo is a beast!
  7. Hi guys. I just joined up myself. I live in the East Bay, Brentwood actually. I'm a warrior, big into powerlifting, but not opposed to go hiking or some other fun stuff with like-minded folks.
  8. Hi Everyone! Just wanted to introduce myself. I honestly can't believe a site like this exists. I've been a gamer most of my life, and unfortunately my body has taken the brunt of it. Between an office job and a divorce, the waistline has suffered. I started getting serious about weightlifting and losing weight about 8 months ago. I started at 315lbs and I'm down to 264lbs. I prefer the slow and steady approach. I hope in another 6 months I can post photos and a journal of my journey. I found others' success stories really keep me motivated and I hope I can do the same for other people too! Right now I'm doing the Madcow 5x5 lifting routine and I'm using Intermittent Fasting for my diet. I started with SL5x5, but after I got my squat and deadlift past 300lbs and started seriously stalling, I switched to an intermediate program. I'm loving Madcow's and light running with my vibrams on off days. Good luck on your journey, and never quit!
