  1. I am not sure if he covers this specifically but he is one of the best on youtube for reviews on health products http://www.rizknows.com definitely worth checking out as he is unbiased and his reviews are excellent. I know he did one specifically on activity trackers and he is always adding more.
  2. Well I would first like to start out saying hello, seems like a logical place to start. A little about me is I was always a nerd and loved playing video games, D&D, anything fantasy or Star Wars. I also am a huge sports nerd and played sports throughout high school, college and still do. I love to run (especially do races like 10k's, half marathons, still haven't done a full one yet. that is my goal this next year) and play soccer. Life has thrown a few challenges at me, like most of us out there and I feel that I have come out stronger and in a better place. I feel like this is a great place for me to help others that have gone through or are going through some tough times. Also it is a good place for me to get some great info and meet some kick ass people.
  3. I definitely experienced this myself a few years back. I was in a bad relationship and just stopped working out all together. Once I got out of that toxic environment I went back to the gym and kind of started from the beginning. I would alter my workout depending on how I was feeling (increasing intensity, weights, etc). Since you are not able to work out currently this would be a perfect time to get your nutrition on point so once you get back to the gym you will be fueling your body with the right stuff and that will help you get through your workouts better. Just think of this as that part of the movie where the hero gets knocked down, now you just got to pick yourself back up and go kick some ass!
  4. Good job dude! It is those small changes when consistently made and built upon lead to sustained success.
  5. Way to go!!! That is the mindset you need to succeed. I have been in that boat many times and now I don't even think about rewarding myself with food, and that is due to remembering times like this and how good it makes you feel.
  6. Really if you want to quit you should go see a healthcare provider. They can provide you with a lot of different options, including some medications that have really helped a lot of people out. Also there is the 1-800-quit-now tobacco cessation quit line. That would be a good place to start as they have a lot of information and you can actually talk to a real person who can act like a coach/cheerleader.
  7. Definitely do some massage if possible and drink a lot of water. Definitely don't rest, even if it is something as easy as walking just keep active. Also for future workouts make sure you are stretched out well and do a good warm-up and cool-down. I like to do yoga every morning as I feel it makes me more flexible and easier to stretch out before a workout.
  8. It is definitely normal, especially in muscles that are not used too often. I know when I first started getting back to a healthy state, this happened after my first couple chest and shoulder exercises. I could barely lift my arms over my head. This doesn't happen to me anymore though, so know it will get better. Main thing is to keep hydrated and keep moving. Yoga is really an awesome tool, I like to do it when I first wake up to help stretch out for the day. I also will do specific stretches and warm up before I start lifting as well.
  9. If running is hurting and putting too much stress on your joints, definitely stay away from it. Walking will be your best friend, set a goal of how much you want to do a day. Remember that it doesn't have to be all at once. So if your goal is 30 minutes and you can only do 10 minutes at a time, then do 3 10 minute blocks throughout the day. Body weight exercises are also a great option. Plus, make sure you are fueling your body with the right nutrition to promote weight loss and promote a healthy body. Remember that it is a journey and not a sprint! You have already made huge strides in deciding to start exercising and get healthy!
  10. I hear you dude. I am in the healthcare field and nothing is more frustrating than telling a pt they need to do something to improve their health and then seeing them a few months down the road and they are worse off and want you to fix them but they don't want to put in any effort. I always try to get them to start with one thing. Maybe try walking more, taking up some activity, drinking only water instead of beverages with high calories. That is awesome that she quit smoking but this new diabetes diagnosis is certainly concerning as that is usually directly due to lifestyle in most adults (unless she was diagnosed with type 1). Maybe you two could start doing more activities together that don't involve the gym. For example, hiking, biking, walking, any sports (soccer, racquetball, tennis to name a few). My wife is the same way and hates to go to the gym (and I love the gym) so we find activities that get us up and moving and we enjoy doing together. The diet will be harder though. I love cooking and trying new recipes with my wife and she does too. If we do go out to eat we try to eat healthier but we really limit that because it is just to hard to get healthy options (and often expensive). But of course none of this matters if she is not willing to do anything. That is something you have to decide on. It can put a lot of strain on a relationship and create a lot of jealousy if one person doesn't feel good about themselves and the other person is changing their life for the better. I am not saying that you have to break up with her but just be careful not to go backwards yourself with all that you have accomplished.
