    Aster Hulk's Out

New challenge in a new guild. I spent the last challenge building some base habits (drinking water and mobility work) now want to step it up and hit the weights. This is going to be a tough one for me, it has been years since I was consistent or in the iron game. Goal #1: 3 workouts a week Going to keep things easy, low reps and sets, and focus on the big 3. Not sure how much muscle I can gain in four weeks but I know that I will get stronger. Goal #2: Sleep! I am lucky if I get 6 hours a night and I am tired of being tired all the time. Time for it to change. Minimum of 7 hours a night, but shoot for 8. Challenge Avatar :

I called it, sore in muscles I didn't know that I have. Water check, healthy breakfast in, and couple sets of bench presses.
  3. Need a little help finding a simple easy base workout for my next challenge. I feel overwhelmed by all the ones I see online. Analysis paralysis, I just need someone to tell me what to do. I'm 38, 6 ft tall, and around 185#. I really have no muscle or strength to speak of. I have spent the last few weeks only working on mobility work and am finally feeling not so stiff all the time. My next goal is to become more athletic. Not sure really how to describe it, not so much talking about a physical body look, but looking for a feeling of fluid strength. I want to feel capable and smooth just walking around. I am planning on two sprint workouts a week and would like to have a strength workout once or twice a week. I have a 35# kettlebell and a home made Indian club made out of pipes that is around 1.5#. I also have a barbell with weights if needed. I have looked online but all the workouts I see are too complicated or beyond my fitness level. I just need a few movements that won't kill me, but will build a base level I can add to later. Honestly the kettlebell is too heavy for me. I can do swings with it but not much else. The club does wonders for my shoulders but not much of a workout. Should I just do swings and sprints for a few weeks? Seems like a lot of hip work. Barbell or bodyweight? Help.

Thanks everyone! Active day today. Mobility work, a lot of walking, and went to the park and did six sets of 20 yard sprints. Thinking of incorporating them into my next challenge. Didn't go all out since I didn't want to pull anything, kept it around 80% effort. Felt good during but now feel like someone hit me with a stick. Going to be sore tomorrow.

A good week. Water is getting easier, most days I surpass my goal of one glass with two or three. Mobility work is going well. I did not get in a healthy lunch this week though. The work week caught up with me. Non goal related I did tune up my car this week. New tires, windshield wipers, wash and wax, new air filter, spark plugs and wires, cleaned the MAF, and changed the valve cover gasket. Other than the tires I did all the work myself. I have changed the plugs before but the gasket was a little outside of my comfort zone. It went off without a hitch.

A decent week. The water is getting easier and I think I am actually starting to like it. Got two healthy lunches in this week but ate a lot of crap on the other days. The mobility work is going well. I am much more flexible on the wall slides and don't feel like I am breaking my arms to keep them flat against the wall. I don't shake anymore on the rotations and can feel the muscles in my butt from the bridges. Wait, that didn't sound right. I mean when I am going about my day I am aware that they exist.

Check, check, and check. The white beans were a good call. Tomorrow is a catered lunch at work, but I am going to try and just stick with a salad.
  8. Love Buffy. Love this. Love you. Good luck!

So far so good. Food prep day! Got a big bag of chicken breasts and am going to grill them up and make lunches for the whole week. I haven't decided on a side item yet. White beans probably, already have some made and frozen and need to finish them up. Was hoping to reduce starches but beans are healthy. I think?

Thanks! My main problem is that I am a bit of a type A perfectionist. I make the plans overly elaborate and the first time that I have a miss or cannot follow it, then it is ruined and it is all over. Yes I realize how crazy that is. I am trying really hard this time to keep things loose and if I miss a day, no biggie, I can pick it back up tomorrow. That sounds perfectly reasonable but really against the grain for me.

Mobility work, check. Water, check. Healthy lunch, check. Even ate my lunch quick at my desk and hung out with my buddy at Wendy's and watched him eat 4 for $4.

This will be my third challenge that I have started, but have yet to finish one yet. I always start out strong but somehow Peter out towards the end. Plus missed the first few days of the challenge but better late than never! Actually I have been following my challenge goals, just have not been recording them here. This time I am keeping things extremely small and focusing on habit changes. Goal #1: Drink one glass of water a day. I never drink water ever. Coffee and Dr. Pepper are my two best friends. I probably stay dehydrated. Goal #2: Eat one healthy lunch once a week. I either eat nothing or Wendy's 4 for $4. I can do better. Goal #3: Daily mobility exercises. A routine of wall slides, thoracic rotations, hip bridges, and two yoga stretches: cobra and child's pose. I am stiff as a board and work at a desk all day. These really seem to get the kinks out. P.S. I Love the new site layout! So much easier to navigate now.

Update: Friday 1.8.2016 Two day leave from the Death Star. I will enjoy the time off, but man is that place impressive. I bet it will be around for a 1,000 years. Took a training run and planning on a speeder ride tomorrow if the weather holds. 1. Run: C25K 2:3 Finished week two! Easy run but blood sugar was low again once I got back even after I ate two granola bars before the run. Might have to start running with candy in my pocket. Tonight I really need to thank Nerdfitness. Today was a day I would typically bag a workout. It's been a long week at work, it's Friday, and I just wanted to veg out on the couch but I felt a weird accountability to do it so I could log it here. Thanks everyone!

Update: Wednesday 1.6.2016 - Forest Moon Late night training run. Was distracted, not paying attention and ran through a deadly DieBtis nesting pit. One bit me leaving me weak. I made it back to base and took the antidote Shugah. No lingering ill effects, but must be more careful from now on. 1. Run: C25K - 2:2 Was just finishing up my run and noticed my blood sugar had bottomed out. I forgot to eat a snack before I went. A bowl of cheerios and a banana fixed me up.
  17. You have some great goals outlined. Looking forward to reading about your progress.
  18. Sounds like you had a great first day! Keep it up.
  19. Overhead squats will humble you, unique combination of flexibility and strength. Try practicing with a broomstick. I fall over with just that.

Be careful on the ice! Can't run if you fall and get hurt.

Update: Monday 1.4.2016 - Forest Moon Late shuttle back to base. Hearty meal with squad and performed maintenance upon my personal speeder. The brakes now stop with a touch. That should keep me from running into any trees and exploding, apparently that happens here. Training run around the base in the cold evening air. 1. Run: C25K - 2:1 Good run but COLD
  24. Sriracha tuna salad! I'm intrigued, care to share the recipe?
