  1. I experience something 'flow'-like when I'm creating something. Drawing, music, etc--something about using the creative side of my brain taps into that 'nothing matters but the item at hand'. Sometimes it happens when I'm working out, too. Like Kyellan said, though, it doesn't happen nearly as often as I'd like.
  2. Physical books, the vast majority of the time. I like the feel, the smell, the weight, the look--and all my favorite books fall open to my favorite parts, and most of them have writing of some kind in the margins. There's an interaction that is lost in electronic versions. That said, there is a time and place for ebooks and audiobooks. The former are great for when I'm traveling (and I love my Kindle Fire). The latter are also great for when I'm road-tripping. Music is great but singing along for anything over a couple of hours destroys my voice, and if I'm driving back home (7 hours one way) or out West (14 hours one way) audiobooks are what get me through the miles.
  3. Aw c'mon, every good nerd should know what equestrian means Multi-syllable words for the win! Yraen, what do you mean by a cowboy who has never ridden? Do you own cows...work other people's cattle....? madbethcash, I hear ya about the workout. One of the best ways to work the abs (for me anyway) is loping circles. I don't feel it at all at first, but by the end of 10-25 minutes they start to feel jelly-like. Speaking of affording horses....ya wanna know how to make a small fortune with horses? You start out with a large fortune
  4. Do you have horses? Like them? Enjoy watching from afar? I know you have to be out there..... I've been around horses since I was 10 (thanks to a brother who decided he wanted to be Amish, which, of course, means one has to have a horse to get around) and they used to be my all-encompassing passion. Even now other interests come and go, but I always return to the incomparable horse. Unfortunately the vast majority of my knowledge has been self-taught, due to not having many people who could show me what the heck I was supposed to do. Colletta was my Arabian/Morgan mare for 11 years, until she passed away almost 2 years ago. She taught me a lot about patience, and trust, and developing the intuition necessary to train and ride, and managing money (because horses are NOT cheap any way one slices it), and hard work....there are so many areas of life where I have been impacted that would not have been developed without the presence of horses in my life. Since she died I've worked as a wrangler on a dude ranch in Colorado, and currently I have friends who let me come and play with their horses whenever I want. Since I used to be intimidated by the thought of riding 'strange' horses I've come leaps and bounds confidence-wise in that area. I would love to learn how to ride English, and maybe even try some show jumping someday, along with reining, dressage...so many disciplines, so little time/opportunity. XD What are your stories? Are you a legit cowboy/cowgirl? Have you ever wanted to ride but never had the opportunity?
  5. 1. Today I found a brand new (still shrink-wrapped) Star Wars audiobook on CD at a second-hand store....for $0.50. Only slightly freaking out. 2. It was a slow day at work, which let me get some other things done that needed to be finished. 3. I get to ride horses this afternoon!
  6. There are several books that I read again and again on a more or less yearly basis....mostly series, actually, but some stand-alone ones as well. Les Miserables Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Out of the Silent Planet series (C.S. Lewis) Horatio Hornblower (series) The Chronicles of Narnia Temeraire (series) Anything Discworld (but esp. the Night Watch books) The Phantom of the Opera North and South (only read twice, but def. added to the 'every year' list) There are others, I know, but these are the first ones I could think of off the top of my head. I have a tendency to come back to old books with dead authors before new ones, for some reason.
  7. Just finished Les Miserables for the....seventh time? Eighth time? I've read it yearly since 16, so I lose count. (Greatest. Book. EVER.) And just finished "A Walk Across America" by Peter Jenkins. (Sprinkling a lighter book in between Hugo's rants about sewer systems and Waterloo keeps La Pave a little more manageable.) Now a couple of books on beekeeping are on my plate--for no particular reason other than I think beekeeping sounds really interesting.
  8. I'm in a little bitty town about half an hour from Fayetteville.....a Northern transplant rather than a genuine Southerner, but hopefully that won't be held against me. XD
  9. My boyfriend of 13 months broke up with me yesterday after I got home from a 9-day visit with him. No warning or anything...it's been a rough couple of days. And while it isn't an actual death, it feels like someone died because both of our families are devastated and don't understand. Still trying to make sense of it myself.
  10. These are some pretty quick and easy recipes...and I think they look pretty delicious too. http://www.marksdailyapple.com/10-primal-meals-in-15-minutes-or-less/#axzz1kx1Bcoi5
  11. Not recently. But last time it was checked the doctor said that it was on the low side of normal. I hadn't thought of the blood pressure bit before, though....
  12. This isn't a new problem for me...but I tend to get really bad headaches when I do intense cardio sessions. I started noticing it more last year while biking in the mornings (usually biking before breakfast, just drinking water). Drinking a lot of water before, during, and after the workouts seemed to help, but not much. I haven't ridden my bike for a few months due to the cold--yes, I'm a pansy when it comes to cold weather--and riding at moderate intensity for about half an hour yesterday resulted in a whopper. They seem like sinus headaches, and usually only last for about an hour after I quit. I don't like taking aspirin and just wait them out. Today while working out (lots of pushups, squats, fast explosive stuff, etc) I got my heart rate up and could feel a headache coming on. Immediately after stopping I was so tired that I actually slept for almost an hour--though I'm counting that to the fact that I've been Primal for a few weeks and am a little tired from carb craving. I don't suspect anything serious, seeing as how these have been occurring for years--but after trying drinking lots water, drinking no water, eating before a workout, fasting before a workout, etc with little to no change I'm getting more than a little tired of them. Anyway. Anyone else suffer these? Or am I just a weirdo? XD
  13. I think it's hilarious how the women's responses are multi-paragraphed, and the guys are all one-liners. XD Well, I ride/train my horse when it's not too cold, and have entertained the idea of endurance riding someday. (It's the 'someday' part that gets me...sigh.) Grosby, I love repurposing clothing...it's the main reason I got into sewing. 8D But I like to knit/crochet etc as well. My boyfriend got me into Lord of the Rings Online, and while I love it I'm still taking a hiatus for a bit. Can't wait to get back to it though...I gotta keep the nerdy gamer front somehow, right?? But in the meantime I have to finish my classes first, and learning medical terminologies + Lotro = bad grades. Alas.
  14. Well....for a serious and a silly reason. The serious bit is because I've always had stomach problems and am positive that grains make it worse, hence the switch over to a more primal diet for the past month. (It's made me feel so much better, by the way, to not have the constant crashing/carb craving). Plus my overall strength and endurance have been getting worse over the past couple of years. The silly reason is because my boyfriend and I are planning on getting married within the next year, and I want to look awesome when that happens.
