  1. University gyms are great! Until you want to lift weights and all the squat racks are full, the deadlifting area is occupied, the benching racks are taken, and the space by dumbbells is littered with people. I'm ready for summer to be here and everyone to leave

  2. Thanks! Yea, I'm hoping to modify that to a certain weight once I see whats an easy weight for me right now. Sadly, at my university gym they only have one place for deadlifts and the guys are always hogging it. Everyday I do weights, its occupied the entire time I'm working out which is typically a hour and a half to two and a half hours. It's ridonkulous
  3. So here pretty soon(almost two weeks! I'M SO EXCITED!) I am traveling to San Diego to visit a friend who is currently living there. I'm only going to be there five days(Fri-Tues) and though there is a beach and plenty of sight seeing for me to do while I'm there, I was curious if anyone has any thoughts or suggestions on what parts of the city/attractions that I should definitely visit. My roommate is originally from San Diego and will be moving back there in July. We plan to go to Disneyland(-little girl excited squeal-) once she moves back, but she suggested that I go to the Zoo while I'm there this trip. Also, any suggestions of fitness things I could do there? I'll be staying at a hotel and sadly, like most hotels, their fitness center is rather lacking. Though they do have free weights! I'm just trying to come up with ideas of how to keep myself entertained while my friend is working Friday, Monday, and Tuesday. Thanks for any suggestions!
  4. I'm a big Oakley's addict(both pair I own I got off Craigslist xD), but as a woman with a relatively small head, sometimes the frames don't fit me well enough for me to run in them. Especially if they're used and the screws have been stretched a little. Currently I run in a pair of Nemesis. They're technically safety glasses(like Oakleys can be), but they're also EXTREMELY cheap(I think the pair I own costs around 10 bucks). They work great for me: they don't bounce with my step or slip down at all
  5. WHOOP! I knew it was only a matter of time till I found another Ag in the Rebellion! That's a great goal/idea! I'm not on that side of campus much so I've only seen the Corps running the stairs of the WCG, but I definitely still laugh at them as they do their galavanting about. I know/knew plenty of members. Thanks and gig em for the well wishes!
  6. So this is my first challenge. I'm still kinda new to all this fitness(weight training, etc) stuff so I'm just trying to get a feel for what type of training I'd like to focus on and such. I've been about 75% Paleo for about six months now. I've just been slowly cutting out parts of my typical diet. Here are the goals I want to focus on: 1. Cut out bread and pasta(this will be the hardest D:) I'll achieve this by not buying them at the grocery store when I go next week(since I ate the last of the pasta this weekend) and resist temptation while I'm working for my waitressing job. 2. Run a 5k within 35 minutes I'll run a half a mile to a mile every day and then on cardio days(Tues and Thurs) I'll build up to 5k distance and from there perfect my timing. 3. Get up the courage to start deadlifting at the gym All the crazy buff college guys in the free weights section just make me nervous. I just have to grit my teeth, wait for a time that the deadlift area is open, and jump in head first. It doesn't matter what other people think! 4. Get my squat max to 120 and bench max to 75 Make tiny increases in my weights everyday/week till I reach these goals. Little victories! 5. Put back at least $20 of each pay check to go towards paying off student loans Current stats: Height: 5'9" Weight: 155lbs Squat: 100lbs Bench: 65lbs
  7. Paleo really is great You have so much more energy and it's really simple to eat. I no longer skip meals for lunch because I'll prepare my meal the night before while I'm cooking dinner. And it makes going to the grocery store much easier/faster. I've heard about spagetti squash... And my roommate actually had some in the fridge last month, but I always forget about it for some reason when I'm grocery shopping. It will go on the list! Thanks terosx. Specific goal setting has always been a personal problem of mine :/ I'm always far too vague. I only glanced over the current challenge the other day... I've been pretty busy studying for the finals I have coming up in the next two weeks :/ I'll have to check into it some more
  8. There are also TONS of videos on youtube which is helpful if you can/want to do yoga in front of your screen. I have a cable that will hook up my Mac to the TV so I generally use that.
  9. I love Dinosaur Valley State Park! I grew up about an hour from there. I haven't done kayaking there, but I did a little hiking last I visited. I'm up for a Rebel meet up if everything pans out
  10. Howdy, My name is Ashlee and I found Nerd Fitness about a year ago, but life events and procastination have kept me from emersing myself into the community. Fact is, I've learned over the course of the year that you can't do everything on your own. I need y'alls help! About me: I am a junior(almost senior) genetics major at Texas A&M University and aspire to go to grad school for genetic counseling once I complete my undergrad(and get accepted into a program). I work two jobs currently in addition to going to school, one as a waitress for BJ's Brewhouse and the other as a student worker for our Equestrian team(I'm a horsey person). I love to keep busy so I sometimes find it challenging to set aside the time for working out, but at least for the past week my friend and I have begun meeting up at the university gym. I've been slowly integrating myself into the Paleo diet and for the most part keep up with it pretty well except for I have a weakness when it comes to bread, sandwiches, and pasta(plus pasta is cheap!) and usually have a day or two out of the week where I'll break down and eat one of the above mentioned. In addition, I've set up a workout routine for myself which consists of three days of the beginner body weight circuit(after comfortable here I plan to switch over to some weight training), two days of cardio(running and biking), and some running and yoga on the weekends since weekends tend to be a bit hectic for me with two jobs. My challenge to myself is not to loose weight, but to get in shape. I've been in love with the idea of crossfit for the past year(ever since my friend started competeing in crossfit competitions), but becoming a member at a crossfit gym is expensive(especially for a college student who already has FREE gym membership) so my goal is to do the best to become crossfit ready hopefully without having to sign up for a membership at a crossfit gym. I would absolutely love to compete in crossfit! Also, I've kinda made a promise to do a Triathalon(kinda a motivational type promise for them) with a friend if he makes it through spec ops training in his military branch. I have a lot of aspirations and only a vague view of the path I should follow in order to reach them. HELP
  11. Pronunciation of things also changes depending on what part of Texas you grew up in. East Texas are generally where the hicks are... Hazard of being so close to Louisiana. I grew up in Ft. Worth and although I do have an accent, but I don't tend to use 'thing' as much as some of us do. Austin is a GREAT place to live for anyone and everyone serious about getting and staying in shape. Like was said above, plenty of resturaunts/food places that will cater to the Paleo diet and almost everyone does some sort of exercise. Plus, it also helps that to basically get anywhere downtown, walking is your best course of action. And since no one above me has really mentioned it much, Austin has a HUGE music scene with lots of festivals going on year round. During those times, the city will be packed full. I was there for South by Southwest this year and it was crazy driving through downtown to get to my friend's apartment where I stayed for the weekend. Music will range in genres too which just adds to the great variety of the town. I hope your move goes smoothly! And I would donate all your winter clothes to charity before you come here, unless you plan on keeping them in the attic for vacation trips up north.
