  1. So glad to see this. So often the recommendation on budgeting is to use cash only but I'm with you, cash just leaks out of my wallet but the credit card is an immediate feedback on how much we've spent. We use one that offers points back to a store we frequent regularly and are saving the points for a special item but the concept is the same.
  2. I have been, the biocides are not acceptable in my area. The more I study, from geologists in the oil industry and industry research the worse it looks. The EPA isn't even coming close to explaining the risks accurately, they are far far worse.
  3. I got up in front of about 500 people, under Bright lights and video cameras and testified agains the proposed BLM oil and gas leases in my valley. Hubby took video from his seat here. This is a woot because for once I've poked my nose above the foxhole, made myself a target and come out with a strong statement in an attempt to save my farm from destruction. It was very hard to do. Currently working on a letter to the BLM at 8 pages and counting. Here's a video flyby of the oil and gas leases proposed in our valley. We're Garvin Mesa near the end. Surrounded by the red lines of the proposed leases. Comment period was extended, if you are a potential tourist, write to the BLM opposing these leases!
  4. That is really awesome! COngratulations! What an accomplishment. Now, an assignment, go read the Millionaire Next Door so you stay in the green. :-)
  5. I hate peanut butter, love peanuts and use peanut oil to do most cooking because of high smoke point and I haven't found a source for coconut oil in my area. While not paleo it is high in protein and sure a lot better than other oils IMO.
  6. I have a single data point. Based on the near miraculous remission of all pain in my hip after a single treatment, I'd say as a method in conjunction with physical therapy to treat injury it's a big win. As far as using it in place of work, I don't think so. Oh and if the muscle is twitching to much it doesn't work as well as a therapy according to my PT.
  7. Sounds grueling, way to go to be one more step closer. Keep it up!
  8. NO, you want to change things stop subsidizing crappy food and expecting that it is reasonable to only spend 10% of your income on the fuel to keep you alive! Eliminate the subsidies on the fossil fuels and commodity corn, soy & wheat that allow for the cheap unhealthy calories, teach folks that a reasonable amount of income to go towards food should be something closer to 25% (what it is in most other countries) and pay the folks producing food properly a living wage.
  9. I've been told that max reps is with proper form. Once form slips you stop and that's your max.
  10. UM At least in the US that is not true. less than 10% of the land currently used to produce food for animals can even be used to produce food humans can eat directly. Reference the USDA crop land figures off their main web site. Eliminating the feedlots or animal prisons, corn as a pile of chemicals able to be broken down and processed into many things and returning o a diversified farming system with plant and animal communities on every farm, a farming ecosystem is totally sustainable, can result in more better quality meat for everyone and also gives a lot of folks jobs, as it takes more human labor to farm that way. All wins IMO. And yes, I think everyone can eat paleo or at least primal (dairy being the big addition I see as useful for those who can digest lactose) with the meat from free ranged grass fed animals where appropriate by species (pigs and chickens need some grain or for pigs mast at least) without any loss of total calories to the humans.
  11. I'm with Spezzy, IMO surgery for anything other than life threatening issues is never a good idea. Heck I'm even opposed to many of the tests that doctors like to do if they require any form of anesthesia. I'd also agree that if you are considering it see a psychologist first, there is probably something else going on to make you consider that. 3 weeks is nothing, in 3 weeks you haven't even been through a full menstrual full cycle with the changes you have made. You are unlikely to see much if any significant changes for months, perhaps even years. That's ok though. It took your body months and years to get to its current state it's silly to think it will change in anything less than a long timeframe. Give it more time, take pictures and just plain wait and see how you look and feel and how strong you are in 6 months.
  12. Been debating on responding but WTH guess I will... I've had night terror/nightmares my entire life. I can usually count on several a month. It's a good month when I only have one wake up in the middle of the night dripping with sweat ready to scream or die episode. I tend to get paralyzed, I squeak (in my mind I am screaming) according to my husband and he's learned that the best way to deal wit it is poke me until I wake up and then let me shake until I recover. I have given up on figuring out what triggers them, I have no F***ing clue why I get them nor how to stop them. Instead I have focused on coping mechanisms. I keep pen and paper by my bed and after a really horrible one I write the d**n details out, scribbled in the dark, sweat pouring off my body (menopause is a bitch) doesn't matter if I can read it or not in the morning, the catharsis comes from the writing. Some have wound up as NaNo Novels or short stories. Somehow deciding it's a muse telling me to write makes it a lot easier to deal with. I also have talked to hubby, he now knows if I am squeaking or twitching or thrashing to bloody well wake me up NOW. I can deal with the several hours of insomnia better than I can the nightmares. I also avoid watching TV or movies I know will cause them, certain horror movies and some really scary stuff is verboten until bright daylight. I also won't read horror novels or stories at night. To deal with the stranger ready to kill me ones I know that the house is locked at night, we have guard dogs who would bark if any stranger came up the driveway (and because of the sheep and predators I wake up when the dogs bark) and I am armed and dangerous and will prevail. You have my sympathies. I know how terrifying it can be. All I can say is that you are unlikely to die during one and also unlikely to kill anyone and that makes it survivable.
  13. nagging ongoing hip issue that's causing even the NF body weight workout to be extremely painful and let's not go into how I hurt after the last yoga class. Only good news is I managed to get the Dr. to write me a prescription for a few sessions with a physical therapist. Hopeful it's a form or other simple to correct issue.
  14. I stuffed it with waste wool combings. Big mistake. We got a wool moth infestation in the main house and the stuffing got infested. I have since pulled all the stuffing out and she is now a rather flat silvery ghost. I expect to be able to re-stuff with something moth resistant though. The duct tape is sliding off my boobs, the gravity is making the adhesive move a bit and some is not sticking as well as I'd like. I only used 1 roll of duct tape and should have used more, hence the suggestion for 1.5 to 2 rolls. Getting it so that it's the right height so I can also measure hems was important. I'm using it for historical garments so no need for legs but I still want to make a leg double for properly sewn medieval stockings. In my dreams I think about traveling to LA and paying a movie special effects company to make a full body double of me that would also allow doing pants as well as skirts.
  15. See my notes here: http://desertweyr.blogspot.com/2007/12/duct-tape-double.html Don't fill it too full if you plan to make corsets. It needs to be squishy enough to mimic how a human body behaves when corseted. Duct tape doesn't stick as well to a plastic bag as you'd hope so a t-shirt is a better base. It takes about 1.5-2 rolls of duct tape to make one. If you are at all claustrophobic, don't do it. By the time it came to cut me out I was more than ready, as you can tell by my expression on my face for the picture. Don't wear a bra, they get in the way. Had to start over for mine. Hope that helps
  16. I can't do lunges btu I can squat. They are similar but just enough different that I can do one but not the other. So I'd say try lunge.
  17. Some of us were on an internet diet yesterday... Looking good, far braver than I to put up pictures!
  18. I'm in my 50's. I'm also a farmer. I'm also overweight, under strong and not very flexible. I am starting on the advice of the doctor to improve diet (moving more primal) and build strength. I already only eat grass finished meats and am slowly removing the carbs and adding more fat. I've started taking yoga classes (and there are some cowboys my age and a bit older in the class with me so I don't feel too out of place). I have both the Rebel Fitness Guide and the Rebel Strength Guide. I'm actually doing more of the Angry Birds style workout because getting the chunk of time to do the guides workouts isn't always happening. So I take 5 or 10 or 15 minutes to do a few squats while filling water tanks, do pushups against the chicken roosts before gathering eggs and other simple things during the day. I haven't lost much weight but I am a lot stronger now and am slowly getting more flexible. I think my fitness level is slowly improving and would a lto faster if I was more dedicated to working out. I'd say the Rebel Fitness Guide is the better starting point because it's simple, easy and good for beginners.
  19. There are no small woots. If **you** think it's woot worthy then it is! Congratulations and good job.
  20. Thank you! I am ok with pooping out inedible seeds, that can happen with me with rice on occasion (I know TMI) so not worries. I was just worried I had really done something totally stupid, on the order of eating rabbit meat with tularemia or something.... FWIW I found the crunchy seeds a nice contrast to the juicy outer part.
  21. OK So I've never eaten one before. bought 2 and the little pamphlet with them that explained how to get the fruit separated from the peel and stuff. Opened one this am and ate about half of the inner juicy bits. No one told me that you weren't supposed to eat the seeds. Hubby came down and said you are not supposed to eat the seeds. I didn't know. Anyone got any more info? I find conflicting data on web re seeds good or seeds bad.
  22. Indiana should have a good animal science focused on farm animal program somewhere. That's a good start for marine biology. Just did a quick google search and found 5 colleges with animal science degrees in Indiana some with multiple campuses. http://www.edref.com/college-degrees/agricultural-science/animal-sciences/indiana
  23. I'm a good decade plus older than your friend. A few simple comments Sheep happens, what occurs during peri and menopause is unbelievable. Slow weight loss is normal. Focus on body fat, measurements and pictures. Oh and at my age, aspirin is your friend, also scotch.
  24. um I fit that description. Anyone who really looks at me notices that I'm small, wear kid size gloves, short, can't find clothing that fits and flatters me to save my life but overweight and underfit.
