  1. It's even worse when you have over 1500 different authors represented in your library, and for many of them you have many or all of their books
  2. Apocalyptic Planet for my vote for this round. I've already got it pre-ordered :-)
  3. Get thee hence to Scrivener. It has the most awesome name generator. You can set all sorts of parameters and it will generate hundreds of names for you. Male, female, 2 part, 3 part, English, Italian, Japanese, and many other nationalities. There are add on files from other people as well that add additional languages. Seriously, it's the only reason I have names for my characters that work. Besides, if you buy a baby name book in Amazon you will be inundated with ads for baby stuff for about 10 months. As I found out to my dismay when I bought a Celtic names book so I could name my sheep.
  4. I'ma NaNo veteran but only ever actually won NaNo once. Switch to Scrivener, you'll thank me at the end of NaNo when you have the 50K in hand er disk :-)
  5. I'm trying to pick what project I want to work on. From past experience I know that if I have any hope in hell of completing I need my characters names, my plot outlines and my locations described before I start. Problem for me is that I did Camp NaNo and I was going great but got a late start so didn't finish. But I really like how that story is coming along but obviously I can't use it for Nano. Yet the many things I've thought of as Nano Novels are all a long way from being ready for November. My one suggestion is to get Scrivener. I never finished/won a NaNo until I had it and I really think it's the reason I've done as well as I have.
  6. I'm going to replace my original first gen kindle with a paperwhite one if when I test it I can see it as clearly with no eye strain. E-ink is the key. I have an iPad, great for books with color and pictures but not for long reading.
  7. Here is the location for the development. Currently only hubby & I are collaborators but if you want to be added and are willing to help contact me. https://github.com/OogieM
  8. Me too so please if we start series start at the beginning of the series.
  9. Hubby & I are working on making an EID tag reader that links to a sheep database for managing our flock. Thought the nerds here might appreciate it. We're looking at 3 hardware pieces, reader, handheld tablet or phone and desktop. Smarts will be in the 2 computers not the reader. Pix of the current state of the device are here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/26001709@N03/sets/72157631585185604/ We used plumbing parts to make the holder for the reader and have a terminal program running on the Android tablet that is just displaying the tag numbers as read. No smarts, no database nothing really but verifying the hardware is working. Gave up on iPad due to Apple Bluetooth restrictions and got the Android version working. It's a start! More info on the existing state of the system: If anyone wants to build one or get info e-mail me. RFID Reader: http://www.priority1design.com.au/shopfront/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=24 Antenna is included. Bluetooth Serial module: For prototyping: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Arduino-Wireless-Serial-4-Pin-Bluetooth-RF-Transceiver-Module-RS232-w-Backplane-/271040855319?pt=US_USB_Bluetooth_Adapters_Dongles&hash=item3f1b4b3d17 For production: (needs FCC cert, the above ones from China are real cheap, but no certs.) https://www.sparkfun.com/products/10253 Battery holder: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/551 This one holds 4 cells, I used one that held 6. 4 is ok for this purpose as the RFID reader can take 6-16V as an input. Should run for a couple of hours on these batts, maybe use rechargeable NiMH or LiIon's for production. Misc.: switch, led's 2 1k resistors, wire, various PVC fittings ($10US worth, although the switch was surplus and probably cost a lot originally) You could use GetBlue right now to do a good job of logging tags: http://www.tec-it.com/en/software/android/getblue/manual/Default.aspx the free version works ok (with nags), paid it's $25US and can save all the tag data to a file or stuff it into a database or whatnot. Our app will be completely open (GPLv2) The Bluetooth API for Android already works well and there are open source apps that use it successfully to read GPS's and the like. This is where we are starting: http://pymasde.es/blueterm/ I'm setting up a github repository for the stuff and hope that it will attract a few more programmers. I'm woefully out of date doing real programming
  10. I take a liquid glucosamine supplement. I've found that it does help some.
  11. I'm in, Here are some I'd nominate: Anything by Craig Childs Particularly his latest due out Oct 2 Apocalyptic Planet Tomatoland: How Modern Industrial Agriculture Destroyed Our Most Alluring Fruit Tomorrow's Table:Organic Farming, Genetics, and the Future of Food The Millionaire Next Door: The Surprising Secrets of America's Wealthy Anything by Pratchett Harry Potter
  12. We buy from a not quite a CSA for our veges. (We grow our own sheep and chicken) The way the place we get stuff from works is once a week he sends out an e-mail with what is available this week and how much for what quantity. You e-mail your order to him and he harvests only enough for the orders he has. If you are gone no box to worry about, if you need more of something you can order it, if you have tried and know that kale is a vile evil thing and will just go to waste (even the chickens don't eat kale!) then you don't have to buy any. Occasionally he does not have enough for everyone of popular stuff. When that happens you'll get less than you ordered but usually you will get at least some. Some weeks there is nothing much good or we don't need much so we don't order much. Some weeks he sends out an emergency e-mail on Thursday morning asking folks to buy a bit extra of something that is suddenly really all ready to pick at once and needs to go. Deliveries are on Friday you either drive to the farm to pick up your stuff or he delivers to a few central places in town. A few more folks are starting to do this as well, it's sort of a virtual farmers market. There is also an actual virtual farmers market locally with a web site that you order from. I've only participated in it as a vendor not a buyer but it seems to work well too. As a vendor you update what is avail each week, take your produce to a central packing shed, where the market folks package the orders and then deliver to a couple of nearby towns. Overall the food is a bit more expensive than the cheapest stuff in the grocery store but is way fresher, has a lot more flavor, is of varieties the grocery store never has and supports my neighbors. A win all around My suggestin is look around and see if there are any things like that that are available for you to try out.
  13. Robert A. Heinlein - Because he was willing to write strong woman characters in an era when women were not considered strong and not allowed to be strong. I am not sure I can pick a favorite. I re-read so many of them regularly. I do particularly like Time Enough for Love and Friday. Tunnel in the Sky was my favorite as a kid when I'd plan what I'd take on a survival class final. Starship Troopers is also a must read, esp. before voting in any election. I also like Deja Thoris in Number of the Beast. Second favorite has to be Anne McCaffrey. After all our farm is called Desert Weyr and our logo is a dragon :-)
  14. I am so sorry for you. If it's any consolation my individual health insurance is currently over $400/month. For 1 Person, with a $5K deductible! And sadly most Americans don't realize that not having universal health care actually costs us more than if we did pay more taxes and had it. Bah! It's almost enough to make one want to emigrate somewhere else.
  15. Used to breed Crabbet bloodline Arabians (old traditional working horses) & half Arabian mules Still have our stallion, 2 mares & a gelding of the purebred and our spotted donkey jack as well. No time to keep anyone in shape for riding so they are all pasture ornaments now. Lost 2 mares this year and may have to put down one of the mares before winter. Everyone is basically retired now.
  16. I was having a similar error in Safari for main boards. I cleared cookies and it's working for me now, might try that.
  17. Hmm, I can't find anything on their site that talks about what operating system other than DOS and no info on managing investment and brokerage accounts. It looks more like a QuickBooks replacement but Windows only? Confused here. Do you have a link to what Mac SW you are talking about, I suspect my googlefu is MIA this am and Im not getting to the right place.
  18. YOu're going more south of us or I'd suggest coming up into Colorado. Our local Harvest festival is the last weekend in September, a bit too early fro you but October and the Aspens turning golden and is lovely. Also don't underestimate how big America is, at least from Australia you know about size but a lot of times folks forget that it can take days to travel across a single state (Texas comes to mind ) You're doing a lot of back and forth, up and down. Might rethink the trip a bit even if it leaves off a few nice places to be a bit more direct so you can spend time in each location. I'd got to Austin instead of Dallas for BBQ. I'd also skip Las Vegas entirely and stick to the outskirts instead but that is me.
  19. Our major home defense is 4 big guard dogs. They are mostly protecting the sheep but we can back them up if needed, like we did last night at 2am. Fortunately whatever was alerting them was outside the elk fence. Burglars are not a big issue here, predators are. For human intruders a pump shotgun is great because nearly everyone knows the sound of a round being chambered. However you have a lot of people in the house for guns to be of much use. I'd worry about friendly fire incidents with that many folks in and out of the house. If you go the gun route be sure you fire regularly at a range and practice intruder scenarios so you are comfortable with what to do and when and how. Make sure everyone in the house knows about basic gun safety and also be sure you are willing and able mentally to kill someone. If you can, find the book "In the Gravest Extreme: The Role of the Firearm in Personal Protection" by Massad F. Ayoob He's also written a bunch of others, I'm off looking at them now myself. Personally I'd look at beefing up the doors and windows, finding an alarm system that can handle multiple in and out with a defuse option and perhaps baseball bats or a big mace. Either will take more effort to kill someone with but gives you that chance of stopping if you are hitting the wrong target. As for safe be sure it's a media rated one and try to hide it or bolt it to a concrete floor.
  20. For all you Shaun the Sheep fans, Shirley is now lifting. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151374621517166&set=a.10151202722517166.543502.11393187165&type=1&theater
  21. Don't know if you are female and at or near menopause but IME if you are either in perimenopause or menopause and eat a higher protein meal you will get more hot flashes. OTOH they are shorter in duration and not as intense if that makes sense. They don't last long but can feel uncomfortable until you get used to the changed furnace you now have. On the plus side you can leave windows open all night and toss off the covers and feel comfortable. Your partner OTOH may want to invest in a new down coverlet ;-)
  22. For Welsh go to http://www.saysomethinginwelsh.com/home/
  23. 2 comments: Easing in is a lot easier on me personally than trying to go cold turkey. If I removed all the forbidden foods then I'd be craving them and want them. But knowing they are still there if I ned or want them means I rarely eat as much or as often. YMMV Second: Those of you who say you feel bad after a cheat meal, I wish I was like you. I can be really really careful and totally primal for 3 weeks and have absolutely no problems having cheese fondue with bread or a big plate of pasta. I never get the terrible feelings that others report. I'm sure it would be easier to stay primal if I did.
  24. Is Mint still an on-line system only? I do not want any of my personal bank data on someone else's server other than the brief time while I download it from my broker or bank to me. Far too many years in computer security to trust that sort of system.
  25. Ignore the concerns about cholesterol and embrace the eggs. They will not cause your cholesterol to go up except in very rare cases. You can always dissect a turkey or chicken into parts and cook the pieces that way. You can buy almonds and make your own almond flour if you really need it or just try to get by without it. I haven't used almond flour at all so far.
