  1. I'd keep focussed on finishing the marathon with a steady pace. Your injury and training interuption will make a sub-4hr marathon extremely taxing on your body, but perhaps you have the natural resilience to get it done! Train long and slow for the next month, giving yourself a week to really cut down just before the event. Keep in tune with your body to see how it is coping as another injury now will knock you out, and small niggles could really flare up on race day. Youll find that a 6hr marathon is really really hard on your body, whereas a 4.30 - 5hr run will be easier. All depends on what you are used to running of course!
  2. My brothers and I all do Movember every year. It takes the full month for anyone to notice our blond mo's though! May have to dye it a little bit this year haha. My older brother had testicular cancer when he was 29. Very stressful 6 months for the entire family as he was diagnosed early and had surgery to remove a testicle (poor lil thing) and then undergo recovery. For a fit, healthy, active young man to be suddenly having a tumor removed it was a definite eye-opener for me.

  4. Adidas SmartRun (GPS Watch) - My mini review What is it: Late 2013 saw the release of a much anticipated product from Adidas, the SmartRun. Simply put, it is a watch featuring GPS tracking aimed at the fitness market. Easy to navigate. Nice design. Looks great. Physical watch size is pretty good. Smaller width and height than a typical Garmin; but a tiny bit thicker/deeper. Still fits nicely on my ‘average male’ wrist. Chunky watches are in fashion, so it doesn’t stand out as being weird! Heartrate monitoring with no accessories. Optical sensor that sits against the skin tracks data instead of using a strap around your chest. MUSIC! 3gb MP3 storage that plays via Bluetooth makes this product stand out from 99% of other GPS watches on the market. Only the Motorola Activ from roughly 6 years ago has this feature. The BAD stuff: GPS lock-on issues. Compared to using a mobile phone, the GPS is a headache. Several recent firmware/software updates have helped immensely, but you cant just pickup the watch and step out the door and run. It can take a few minutes to get a lock-on, which is best done prior to getting ready and dressed. (I'm led to believe that most GPS watches are slower than mobile phones) Battery life: Being a featured packed watch the battery is a limiting factor. Adidas have done a great job, but you still need to be aware that having GPS, Heartrate, Bluetooth all going is hard going on the battery. For a marathon event, I was unable to use heartrate or bluetooth music to ensure it lasted the distance (which it did with about 15% left). Heartrate sensor: I admit I have nothing to compare this to, but I don’t think it tracks my HR very closely. It can be at 110 when I haven’t even started jogging yet, which is crazy high. But then will sit at a relatively normal 160-180 when I’m pounding the pavement. I have turned it off for now. I'm not a data nerd, so heart rate isn't too important for me. Other stuff: Workouts and MiCoach: Adidas’ app and software offering is getting better all the time. The App is available for all devices (inc WP8!) and the website does everything you’d expect. It has a lot of pre-built workouts you can load onto the watch, or build your own, or just ‘free-run’ as I do J Settings and syncing: WIFI, bluetooth phone tethering, account setup, phone options are all really good and easy to use on the phone screen. Summary: The device is amazing. It has suffered a lot of teething problems in the past 8 months since being released where it lost of a popularity. Adidas has slowly updated the software and if it had been released in its current form then it would have sold like hot cakes. The addition of a music player means I leave my phone at home. A watch and bluetooth headphones are all I take when I go for a run. Easy. Sadly, the watch is at a premium price. USD$499 is a lot of money unless you really plan to make good use of it. Compared to offerings from Garmin, TomTom, etc at $100-200 that at least do GPS tracking the extra cost is noticeable. If it carried a $350 pricetag you can see how it would compete against the upper-end of the Garmin range.
  5. Great decision to start the journey that is running Everyone has posted good stuff so far. I have no personal experience with C25k but I still recommend it to friends/family in your situation. Also something that hasnt been mentioned yet.... nutrition. Dont go crazy, but really try hard to focus on hydration on your running days. If you keep up a steady water intake, your muscles will thank you. Thus keeping your motivation up to keep up the running program. its a nasty chain reaction of 'feeling bad', 'skipping a day', 'shit, I havent run for a whole week', 'stuff it, I'll stay on the couch'.

  7. Been a year since my last holiday. /sad South America! Iguazu Falls, Argentina El Calafate, Argentina Machu Picchu, Peru Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia Easter Island And I'll leave it there otherwise I'll just post hundreds of amazing places!
  8. My wife attends my fun run events, particularly my first marathon last year. Saving me carrying too much she was positioned a few spots along the route with a cut banana and gel for my choosing. Got a few (funny) envious comments from other runners! haha
  9. Or a bit of both. I love variety Slow, long steady run 1-2 times a week. Interval or hill work 1-2 times a week. Make sure you are having fun and enjoying running fast, otherwise your brain will stop your reaching any goals.
  10. Last year I achieved my distance goals, so this year i aim to run a bit faster. Pretty strict goals based on what races I know I'll be running: Sub 20min 5k (Corporate relay race. My company would love me to smash this fast!) ~1:30 Half Marathon (My brother is a powerhouse at Halfs, so I want to keep up with him at least once) ~3:45 Marathon (Well within reach if I actually train properly)
  11. Talking of overpriced... I've purchased an Adidas SmartRun watch, which I'll be receiving for my birthday this week (thanks family!!). Its the only GPS watch apart from the old-and-buggy-but-still-good Motorola that has mp3 capabilities. It also has a built in heart rate monitor, so no annoying chest strap. From reviews the downside is mainly battery life. I'll write up my initial review in a week or so.
  12. Well I spend 10-12 hours a day on a computer...so I guess I'm a lifestyle computer nerd! I lazily walk the line of a multimedia dev...one part graphic design, one part web developer. Its a bit of a no-mans-land. In my spare time (what is that?!) I am an illustrator and 3d asset builder for games. (Steam Workshop and game mods)
  13. Its all about boosting your confidence enough so that you can get that first interaction happening with any potential partner that may appear in your life. You seem to have the social networks to find someone with similar interests so that is a great start. If getting fit is your key to self confidence, then go crazy! Perhaps its learning a particularly awesome song and being able to play it for one of your musical groups. Try this...smile at people. Its really hard to do! Walk down the street one day and if you see a nice guy, smile at him. We all like a quick perv, but tend to quickly turn away so they dont notice us looking. Make it a challenge to catch someones eye and smile just for a second or two. You arent trying to hook up or start conversation, just a casual smile. High school really knocks your self confidence around. If you stuff up then other kids will tease you and humiliate you in front of others. In the REAL WORLD you will probably never see people ever again, so it doesnt hurt to try to put yourself out-there!
