  1. I'm right by Ramaley park, south of 96, west of 61. Sent from my SM-G900P using Tapatalk
  2. This is a brilliant idea. And I think it would be cool if it were chronological: What you need to know 6 months out, 1 month out, the night before, the day of the competition. Sent from my SM-G900P using Tapatalk
  3. I'm up in White Bear Lake. Subbing the thread

  5. Success! Tried it tonight, and his confidence level soared. And I think he got a lot more things on his own because of it. I'm excited to continue.
  6. I have the same kind of issue. I signed up to get some programming help, but there's no way my schedule (or my body, at this point) can handle the volume that they want me to do.
  7. Week 2 in the books. Not quite as good as week 1, but I'll give myself the thumbs up. Week 3 starting pretty well. I discovered that Aldi has some nice frozen vegetable packets that are just about perfect size. All I have to do it let them warm up, and they are just the way I like them.
  8. And, miscellaneous updates: Installed IRC client on phone to connect to chat. I'm starting to feel comfortable in the chat room again. Both there and here in the boards, I need to be patient, and I need to accept the limitations. There is goodness here, it doesn't have to be the same for me as it is for others.
  9. And here's something I want to do to become the kind of superhero I want to be: For my ADD-diagnosed son, who has a lot of troubles with reading, principally in retaining anything about the story, I want to change the way we read together. Right now I am a very typical parent (or so I read) where I get frustrated and I say things which are almost certainly not helpful, such as, "You aren't focusing." "Pay attention!" etc. I know these erode at his confidence, which only makes the situation worse. So, what we are going to do instead is when we read together, I will ask a question that I think he should be able to answer. I will let him give his answer (right now I sometimes stop him because I can tell he's off in the wrong direction) and when he's right, which often happens, I'll praise him. When he isn't right, I won't keep driving him to the right answer, I'll just give him my interpretation and move on. Maybe, maybe we'll handle his other day-to-day issues in a similar way.
  10. And... in less exciting updates, here's yesterday's workout: Barbell Bench Press (done at home in the evening):55 lb x 10 reps135 lb x 5 reps185 lb x 5 reps185 lb x 5 reps185 lb x 5 reps205 lb x 3 reps225 lb x 2 reps235 lb x 1 reps Done at work (I'm just getting back into doing this kind of thing): Two-Arm Kettlebell Swing55 lb x 15 reps55 lb x 20 repsOne-Arm Kettlebell Clean55 lb x 14 reps55 lb x 20 reps
  11. Chapter 4! Origin story and alter ego. This could be challenging. Let's start with the easy part, the origin story: By day... Jamie is a pretty ordinary 21st century middle-class (and middle-aged! ) man. He works at a 9-5 job for a major corporation. The job provides him with much-desired flexibility and some fun challenges, as well as a large dose of the inefficiencies and frustrations that accompany such a job. He has two children from a failed marriage. He has some poor eating habits (mostly binge and emotional eating). He sometimes misses out on things due to procrastination. His romantic relationships seem to have a shelf-life of 2-5 years. He is an introvert who sometimes self-sabotages good social situations. By night... TBD (And isn't that just perfect in this situation?)
  12. The main point of this blog is going to be to track my progress with Steve's book: Level Up Your Life: How to Unlock Adventure and Happiness by Becoming the Hero of Your Own Story I'll also log my workouts and food insights. Right at the end of the first chapter is the following: So other than reading this book, do yourself a favor and don't collect any more underpants for the time being. As you are reading, don't be afraid to put it down and get started and come back to it as you find different paths along your journey. So that's what I'm doing. I'm putting down the book and starting this log. In a way this is just repeating an old pattern, but I think that's ok, because it was a pattern that worked, for as long as I stuck with it. Of course, it would help if I can change the way I do things around here. Part of that is going to be social. I have sometimes felt alienated around here, and that's 95% my fault. But now, here's a new thing (although I think I've tried variations of this in the past): I've thought a lot about having some kind of repository where I list the things that I think I should remember, and some kind of system to get me to review them from time to time. I'm going to make one right here. I'll update this first post with the things I need to remember, and I'm adding a reminder to my calendar to review and update them regularly. 1. Read with your son in the modified way. 2. Be active. The more people see you, the more likely they'll interact back with you. 3. Be positive. Listen to that voice that is telling you that you don't have to say that thing. 4. Finish character creation. Steps taken to achieve goals (add these to posts later on):
  13. Hey there Rooks. Yes, that's the one. Sounds about my speed for now. Calling me a powerlifting at this point is a serious stretch. My heart will probably always be in throwing stuff. Any powerlifting event I compete in would probably have to be in the fall or winter. You know, I think we interacted on the boards here back when I was active in 2012. When you figure out your schedule, I'd certainly come to watch, and cheer, if I can.
  14. LIfting Large 13mm Competition Single Prong Titan knee sleeves I already own a pair of VS Athletics weightlifting shoes
  15. I feel like such a pro now. I got my IPF-approved belt and knee sleeves in the mail yesterday, and of course gave them a test run. My knees in particular felt great. Usually it's quite a process to warm up my knees. And, I finally got depth on my squats that I think is unequivocally 'legal'. I think the only thing I would be missing now is a singlet. There's been a beginners powerlifting meet here in Minnesota for the past couple of years in the fall. I think I'll pencil that in.
  16. I bet you will. That miss was so close. I watched the video with the sound turned up, and your yell startled my son I imagine the yell will be even louder when you make it.
  17. Ugh. Hope you feel better soon. I am watching intently to see that bw snatch. What a great milestone! Sent from my SM-G900P using Tapatalk
  18. So... the virtual meet in February sounds interesting, and it's probably time for me to change my training a bit. So, for the next few weeks I'm going to do some dead lifts and bench press (in addition to my normal squats) and see what I can do in the meet. Right now my goal is to beat the marks I set in the only other virtual meet I attempted, back in April 2012 (and to go deep enough in my squat where I feel ok to count it. It's still an issue): 485# squat, 255# bench, 525# deadlift. I did a very quick workout last night, and I got a double in the bench press at 205 and a double in the deadlift at 405. Neither one felt particularly heavy, but it seemed like a good idea to not push it too hard the first day.
  19. Ah well. It's a weight loss program. I have bad eating habits.
  20. Wow. It feels like I need a PhD. It looks like there's a 'beginners' USAPL competition around here in the fall. That might work.
  21. Way to go, Archon! You are very quickly becoming a beast. Olympic lifting can be amazing, just make sure you have someone to help you with form.
  22. I'll be back on MFP soon (or something like it, I guess)! There's a free program at work that looks pretty good. Time to start tracking again.
  23. I will fully admit that I'm using you as motivation. I'm using that 200 kg double as a milestone. Just for fun I played around with Wilkes (included age-adjusted) to see what it would take to catch you. That's gonna take a while, especially since you're still obviously improving.
  24. It's definitely tempting, if for no other reason than I want to be part of the epic NF team! (By the way, when I first read this, I thought you were calling me out!)
