  1. I dunno... I totally see value in a quiet evening of just the two of you. Being able to really focus on grown up conversations, quiet time, a bottle of wine...it's important. Kids are great, but you need just adult time too.

Our best dates are often dinner at our favorite restaurant, favorite music and a bottle of wine, and sometimes movie and dinner. Often, we are low key. Usually, no phones those nights....

I value the time to really connect without distractions. Movies, concerts, etc. while lots of fun...are distractions from time with another human.

I hope your date night was awesome and the sleep plentiful.

And well done on work. The quiet leadership of getting things done and supporting the team will be noted and rewarded.

  2. *cough*BULLSHIT*cough*

What do you want me to say?

    ^ Agreed.

Glad you're back. I was going to spam your FB with pictures all week if you hadn't posted here.

Nekkid selfies? Bc I already leaked those on the interwebs. Google "cute, funny cats" and you'll see them

*snort* fine. What have I been doing?

Muay Thai!!!!!! SQUEEEEEE Lots of head kicks the past couple of weeks, including hiding the head kick...awesome. That class ended w four rounds of sparring, including me w a very senior, very strong partner. Serious face punching. We also had a class on skater's punch. Awesome. I loved that and it feels really good for me. Great combo. Senior partner. Got in the car aft and spousal unit said "you look like you are from the Walking Dead". Ha ha. Yeah you do a 45 min WOD and finish w 3 mins of planks crossfit boy.

I also decided to got back to boxing more regularly. I love it and love the coach. Except he makes me jump rope. My knees actually did not die. I'll prob stick w some boxing for a while.

Otherwise, I lift. Saw coach a couple times recently. Had to lift in front of a former olympic athlete (not a weightlifter) which was nerve wracking but coach thought it was great. He was all smiles bc he loves the other guy. Whatever. It was weird. Luckily, it was short sets at 280 so I looked good and they were easy. Pulled 300 5 times yesterday, put 108 up several times OHP... I don't know. Just average stuff. OHP still sucks.

    Just stuff. Nothing special.

  3. Hey!

I still like reading about what you are up to!  Don't stop!

(in other words, I miss you!)

Miss you too. But I really don't do much that's interesting. I watch the lawn grow...yell at kids...(note: I ain't got no lawn)

She's clearly busy drinking beer and telling kids to get off her lawn.

And then elbowing them in the face to get them off said lawn.

    I need more beer.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha OMG that's hilarious!!!! It was their fault for serving beer that early...to me....

    That's just wrong and evil.

  4. I forgot to add some stuff (old people are long winded... and you must respect us)...

Not everyone has a career.  You do.  You have a career you love and you are good at.  Remind yourself that you are more than just TKD.  It's not always valued to have a great job you like but it makes you, honestly, a well rounded, interesting, thoughtful, caring person.  In the end, your ability to be compassionate, to be involved, and your ability to connect in the toughest times with your team and your patients will provide you with more fulfillment and social value than any sport.  Truly.

Being a well rounded person who has so much and offers so much is much more important than testing.  I promise you it is.

  5.

I turn 30, I have to bow out of the World Championship tournament and miss going to Italy (even though I still qualified to go, it still is a hard hit to have to miss that competition) AND I am due to test for my 5th Dan next month (my instructor said I was ready) but I'm going to miss that as well. I can't afford it. It's like $500 minimum to test for 5th Dan. Meanwhile there are a ton of blackbelts I've helped bring up through the ranks that are testing without me. It's hard.

With all of thing things together it's hard to not feel like I'm constantly sliding downhill. I've missed out of so much, fallen just short, and it's slowly eating at me. I know age has nothing to do with it but it has done a severe number on my motivation and consequently self confidence.

I wonder how many 5th Dans Bruce Lee did.... googling.... ha ha you already knew the answer (and no... it's not cause he did a different sport).  I'm pretty sure testing wasn't all he was about.  So why I say such a crabby thing?

Because you know testing isn't what it's all about.  If a student couldn't test would you basically say "yeah, man, dude you are letting it all slide".  No.  Of course not b/c you don't believe that.  And you don't.  Being on a forum where everybody is all "woot woot do more do more show off brag brag" fosters a feeling of "I'm not enough".

My friend... you are enough.  Each day is enough.  Just be.  It's okay to not test for lots of reasons - cash, just tired, have conflicts, etc.

At my gym, there was a rush by certain people to test, test, test.... I didn't test up at the first opportunity for my current level.  Why? Um... guess what... I was going out of town on a trip I was dying to go on and I let that bug me.  For a hot minute... bc everyone else was testing I though "oh I'm getting left behind".  BUT we know the reality of testing is just proving your skills at a particular time.  It doesn't mean a lack of skills if you don't test.  Right?

I didn't test for my next level up when they first offered it.  Why?  I'm not ready.  I'm seriously not ready.  I did talk with coach about it being a someday in the not distant future goal.  He said "you'll have to stop lifting for a couple of months to get ready".  hmmmm... probably not a choice I'll make.

And on that note... in the last test for what would be the next level for me... my 70 year old friend legitimately kicked ass.  Now, just so you know, it's about 30 straight minutes of sparring the pros and the fight team.  Average age - probably late 20's.  HE'S EFFING 70.  I saw the testing.  It was legit (too legit to quit!).

You'll be fine.  Concentrate on being.  Just being.  Not striving.  Just being.

As for 30.  I know it hits a lot of people hard.  Didn't bother me - didn't see the point.  It would happen no matter what.  But it bothers a lot of people.

Here's a little secret - your 30's are the BEST!  You are finally (usually) on a really great career path, you have awesome friends, money to do things, and you are still young and healthy.  They really are great.

    Cliiiiine! <3 <3 <3

OF COURSE YOU ARE INVITED!!!   YOU ARE A MONK AT HEART!    EVERYONE KNOWS THIS.

(p.s. yeah....might need a supply bag of mouthgaurds. And Listerine. Always the Listerine bath you have to drop it in when it gets punched from your mouth to the floor and you gotta stick it back in. Hate it when that happens >.<  )

I fight at an MMA gym.  Ain't no listerine in an MMA gym.  That's funny.  You just pick that sucker up and put it right back in and keep going. We're tough that way.
