  1. Oh no!!! So sorry to hear! Are you in a lot of pain? I sure hope not. All the kitteh love and sharknado movies!!
  2. At 5'7" and 145, you are already at a good weight. I wouldn't worry about cutting as much as good fueling to maximize training.
  3. Ha ha. always training.... LOL Thanks! Actually, I kept up my regular training pace through the injury.
  4. oh yeah... hi. I kinda forgot about this thread. job, training, spousal unit... meh. to be honest, I just kinda forgot. So here's my story for the day. Got last minute dinner and drinks invite from a fun friend we barely see even though we only live about 2 blocks apart. She's crazy busy, we're busy... no excuses. Anyhow... we don't see each other often enough. So we meet at the gym to go out. She asks if I'm all recovered from my injury and surgeries. I assume she's talking about last year's meniscus tear but no she's talking about the ankle/knee stuff. Oh yeah. Hells yeah that was like 2.5 years ago. Meniscus surgery last year, blah blah cortisone for trauma arthritis blah blah... waited on mensisucs surgery until after CMC and goruck... "wait... what?". so we talk about that and then I mention my cracked ribs and blah blah blah. Me: Geez o pete! I'm old. We are starting tonight by talking about what ails me. This is sad. I'm old. Her: No you sounded old when you said "rock concert".
  5. Yesterday's battle was leaving work on time! Ha ha! I was able to! Consultants be damned (they were at the other campus - ha ha. AND we got last minute plans with a friend! So I rushed off to the gym for my training. It was a very long program. I don't post much about my training but here goes: Worked up to heavy squats. I do some warm up and then coach has the sets starting at 70% my working max (note your true 1RM is not generally your W1RM). I had sets of squats at different %'s. At the top, squats 5 working sets at 230#. Deads were super light and were supposed to be light (coach wrote the program). Several sets at 230#. Which yeah, is light. Heavy bent rows several short sets Hammer curls many long sets (several sets and high reps) Pushups - perfect chest to ground, slow, full ROM several sets, many reps after dinner & drinks with friend... we all walked our 2 mi home. It was a beautiful evening and she's a great person to hang out with. It was a perfect night.
  6. Spartan ass slaps will be had. They are not as good as goruck ass slaps (which are oddly motivating). I believe I might just attempt to ass slap all the spartans, just cause. Thanks!!! They are soooooo much better. It's a tough injury. I cracked a rib back in college and that round was a lot worse. This wasn't as bad. It just takes time... booo. But yes! So so so so much better. Thank you!!! I'm actually feeling better every day and rarely notice it now. You know how all of a sudden you stop and think "Damn! I don't hurt!" <- that's where I'm getting to! Yea!!!
  7. Because an epic moment happened last night, this gets it's own post: "There is no f*cking pole dancing in the power rack! People will die." - The Art of Clineliness
  8. cline@getoffmylawn.com or probably .net b/c I'm old.... LOL. I access it on my dial up interwebs. Yes.. msg me for ass slaps coordination.
  9. clicked on the link hoping for porn got nothing. Profound disappointment at work.
  10. hey... the stuff in Mo is awful, tragic, etc. and should occupy our collective attention. BUT it's nothing new. Dude, I live in a city where the mayor gave the okay to firebomb an entire block of homes occupied by normal, law abiding awesome people b/c people in one house were out of control. They killed most of the people in the bad house - people who hadn't killed anyone. Back then, not sure it would have even made twitter... not if Robin Williams died. It sucks. But civics just isn't important any longer. We don't understand anything but celebrity and don't like to talk about things that are hard. Race, police, power, force.... these things are hard. Anyhow, I feel you.
  11. I see you found video of my fight training ^^^^ Here's a video of one of the strongest fighters at my gym (yup that's my gym they are filming in OH and the film maker is the sparring partner who kicked my ass last week). Anyhow, this guy is an amazing athlete and very much a natural athlete. His daily training is not weight lifting. He does lift some but not much. He runs... a lot. 12 mi run is nothing to him. He's the one who change the Air Dyne to "high altitude" settings so he could train harder (and then laughed when I told him I was cool with using it that way). His daily training is fight training and a lot of body weight stuff. Lots of sprawls. The fight training he's doing here with our other fighters is exhausting (and yes, that's how we all train we just don't look that good - but that's a typical hour of training for me). BTW... the reason he's so ripped isn't his deadlift... it's his low body fat. He's 5'7" and walks around at about 150-155 max. Fights at 145. He's about fight weight in this video. http://vimeo.com/93211728
  12. HI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ribs are at about 90-95%!!!! I haven't tried any type of sit up (b/c why?) and I threw right hooks yesterday and they didn't hurt!!! SQUEEE! Haven't tried seated rows (which blinded me w pain) but on the whole WAY better. Ribs take time. And Ass Slaps are WAY better anyhow. I need more. I expect Spartan Ass Slaps.
  13. No. I try to avoid those at all costs. And actually, they are down observing in various areas etc and there is not "here's how our day went" stuff. That comes tomorrow. But it comes at lunch and only for 2 hours...
  14. I do not understand the concept of Taco day. "In my day, we didn't have taco day. We simply had dinner." - The Art of Clineliness, Food Version
  15. OH! I almost forgot - can we see you in Sept at the spartan thingy? Wanna tailgate?
  16. mmmmm all the traps and biceps. I'm makin a date with that guy.
  17. I like that the TX tramp stamp is still the first thing we see here!
  18. Right. Tiger isn't spending his time deadlifting. He wouldn't fit in his golf shorts. ;-) I don't argue stronger isn't better but it's different strength and not what most people here say. It's pretty common for someone interested in fighting to post about strength training and get the response of "do the big three" or "do Oly". That's not the key. The key to being a GREAT fighter and even a good fighter isn't to lift a lot of weight... it's to perfect the technique. Same with golf. Pretty sure some of the best golfers aren't big lifters. What we're all kind of saying is sports specific training matters.
  19. until you know more about a plan for treatment, etc. we can't do much for you in terms of workouts. BUT here's the thing - a lot of this is mental. Really. I had vicious surgery to a knee and ankle at the same time. Meant I was literally on my back only in bed only (no sitting up even) for two weeks. Then bed/couch bound and on crutches for months. So I get it and I get the frustration. I couldn't even walk for months without crutches (non weight bearing). Sucked. Here's what you can do now: 1. Reframe. Is this going to suck no matter what it is? Yeah probably. Backs hurt and that's a hurt like no other. And yeah it means PT and maybe other things. The thing is you don't know yet so don't plan on the worst. Plan to find out and deal with it then. What if it's PT for 4 months? Whoo hoo!! that's training my friend! And your PT will work with you on progressive programming. So... reframe. Healing is really about reframing. 2. Dial in the diet. I had to do this every time I was laid up. IT SUCKS. The thing we want most is to resort to pity eating. Pity eating feels great for about 15 mins. Then it doesn't. You want to make sure your body is primed for healing and primed for healthy. Which means if you are used to 3000 calories or more a day now, start planning to dial it back some while you are laid up. If you do this positively with a good reframing, this is you taking control over your well being. I know that's a hard way to think about it and you are probably saying "you're full of BS suzy sunshine" but it really matters. 3. Think about how you can "workout" when you can't work out. For example, last summer I had a different knee surgery (ha ha joke's on me). I couldn't train for a short period of time and then had really limited work I could do, etc. Boo. So I read some great training books, listened to awesome podcasts during my normal training time, watched vids during my training time, etc. Train the mind, my friend. At my MMA gym, we encourage all injured students to come and watch training. Guess what? You still learn. I actually went sometimes just to watch. If you are really committed, you find a way to keep training. You can hang out at your gym and talk shop, etc. It makes a HUGE difference mentally while you recover. It really does.
  20. Actually, not really. Again, think golf. Does getting really strong make you a better golfer? It makes you really strong. Maybe you can cart your bag around a little easier, but if brute strength was a key to success... maybe someone would be on that already? Same for tennis, etc. The Williams sisters are great athletes but so are many many many others without brute strength. For MMA, there is some tendency toward strength building b/c the ground work but not for the striking. And there is a desire to not be too bound to muscle mass b/c it's a sport fought at weight levels. MMA guys look jacked b/c they fight at very low body fat. In reality, they are pretty small. But muscled for fighting. It's really endurance - the ability to be exhausted and still torque the body properly to get a full hit. Being strong makes me slower and makes me tire faster. Coach said that in order for me to test up to the next level (which would come in about a year), I'd probably have to stop lifting completely for almost a month.
  21. The consultants are still here. I did not leave work until 2 hours after my normal time yesterday b/c consultants and meetings with VPs. I like them all very much and the consultants are a WEALTH of information and we'll do really great things with their recommendations AND I LOVE the VP we were with, but come on guys.... I wanted to lift yesterday. As a result... I didn't get to the gym until too late and spousal unit and I had planned a Sharknado marathon last night (It took me a year to convince him to watch it. He won't watch regular shark week stuff b/c he's lame). That means lifting tonight and no Muay Thai. *sigh* Luckily consultants close up shop on Friday afternoon. Last night was Warmup = 100 teeps (push kicks) to the bag, 20 cut kicks/switch kicks to the bag right/left, 20 punches, 20 hooks 5x3 mins rounds of heavy bag work Bike sprints, bike recovery = total of 15 mins. for 5 sprints on level 15 (bike goes 1-20), with 1 min recovery. Warm up and cool down on either side. Only walked 1 mi b/c bus came and well... sharknado marathon. Phoned it in on walk home. Luckily the consultants are at the other campus today so I won't get out of here late today.
  22. I'm not sure it's very good. And no, not satisfied. Seems awfully small.
  23. Totally jealous you got to see that. I love watching our fighters train and they are not even a smidge close to his level. Exactly. It's not about cleans or deadlifts. It's about practice and form. I explain the translation like this: Imagine a fantastic golfer (or if you prefer just a great hitter in baseball or even a great quarterback if you must). What makes this golfer great? His ability to hit the ball the way it needs to be hit. For long shots, that involves hitting the ball perfectly with the right club to make the ball fly far. Now have you ever golfed and tried to just muscle through every shot? Ha ha ha - yeah it sucks and so do you. So why don't we just tell golfers get freaking strong - do power cleans to work those hips. Then your shots will be great! Because power in golf is not generated through brute strength. It's generated.... from the ground up in combination with the shoulders and equipment. That's fighting. Telling fighters to just get effing strong is like telling a baseball guy if he could only bench 300+ for reps, he'd be a better hitter. Um. No. He needs to spend hours and hours and hours hitting. Perfecting the technique that works for him. And working from the ground up and the top down with equipment. This has turned into a fun thread! I want to hear more about Manny training!!!!
