  1. I know this thread is old but you can use white potatoes as well. Most Paleo advocates are fine with those especially if you aren't trying to lose weight. I tend to use bananas for carbs a good bit when I feel like I need more. Plantains can be eaten when they are very green as well as after they have turned totally black. If you bake of fry them when they are green they have a starchy taste and are not sweet at all. When they are ripe they will be very sweet when cooked and are more like a desert. They can also be eaten raw when they are ripe. These pancakes are one of my favorite recipes Plantain Pancakes 1 Large green plantain 2 Large eggs 1 tsp Vanilla 1 dash Nutmeg 1/4 tsp Salt Throw all ingredients in the blender (only the plantains and eggs are mandatory) and blend on high for 3 minutes. Cook like regular pancakes on a hot griddle or skillet until browned on each side.
  2. This happens to me while backpacking or on long easy walks/runs sometimes. Keep tabs on your electrolyte intake because the swelling can be a symptom of hyponatremia (low blood sodium) which can be caused by drinking too much water and diluting your electrolytes. I think that there are other causes and I'm not sure what mine are but it's worth adding hyponatremia to your Google searches about your hands. Happy walking to you.
  3. I'd like to point out that avocados are a healthy source of fat and calories. They are high calorie and folks should be aware but there is no need to cut them out when cutting weight.
  4. I grew up on a farm raising our own animals for food supplemented by hunting/fishing for meat as well. I know where most of my meat comes from and I have access to animals that are treated well during their lives. I feel better with meat in my diet.
  5. I don't even know. I've had about 80 amateur fights and some in Tough-man Contests. I've been knocked down 5 times in fights and a few more in sparring sessions. I've never been out cold but I've had mild concussion symptoms on a couple of occasions. Nothing serious. I'm not going to pretend that boxing isn't dangerous but we aren't generally allowed to get knocked out multiple times in a single competition like a football quarterback might. Thanks for the support! I'm doing pretty good now. I've been getting my daily exercise in and planning my goals for the next challenge.
  6. Hi guys, I've been reading the forums and blog all weekend after listening to an old Paleo Solution podcast that featured Nerd Fitness. I'm looking for something to get me excited about working out and eating better again. This place looks to be a fun and exciting way to do that. I just wanted to pop in and say hi and try to get myself started. I have some work to do on my goals but for now I just want to get into a habit of exercising daily even if it's only a walk. I don't really need to lose much weight, if any. I'm 47 years old, 6'0" and 185 lbs. As a kid I boxed as an amateur sporadically from age 8 to about 25 so I was exposed to exercise and decent eating habits. I found Crossfit around 7 years ago but a string of minor nagging injuries kept me from sticking with that. I also enjoy running. I'm not fast but I've completed 3 marathons and a couple of half marathons over the last several years. These days my runs are shorter and slower. At any rate I want to get myself back into shape with a focus on gymnastic strength and endurance/stamina building exercises. I hope to use my new super powers to rock climb and kayak with my kids and strengthen my weaknesses to avoid injury. I know I'm rambling now. I'm just pumped to be here!
