  1. Just wanted to humblebrag that I pushed through with my squats workout today despite it being day 1 of Ye Olde Period, AKA the bleeding-like-a-stuck-pig day (thank you softcups for being so reliable), and the midst of everything-makes-me-sad syndrome. Lessons learned: athletic performance is seemingly unaffected by my period, but as I wrote post-workout on my blog, it's just not as fun squatting heavy weight when a) stuff is shooting out of your uterus in a downward trajectory that the squat is, anthropologically speaking, designed to enhance, and you cried at a Sleepy's Mattress commercial in the car on the way to the gym.
  2. Hey all! I've been lurking here for a while and figured I'd join for real... an Austin meetup would be frickin great! Hope this happens.
  3. Cool! Heading off to look for the meetup thread... that would be awesome!
  4. Chiming in with love for Lululemon's Ta Ta Tamer--it kept my D-girls frozen in place through all 26.2 miles of the Marine Corps Marathon, and didn't chafe or anything. It's expensive but I've washed mine a zillion times and it still looks like new. I've also heard great things about the Moving Comfort Fiona, but haven't needed to try it due to owning a TTT.
  5. Hi, everyone! I've lurked here for a couple weeks but wanted to chime in on a thread today, so I registered and everything. Thought I'd say hi and see if there any people on this forum in Austin!
  6. I was planning on doing my May Tough Mudder (PA) in my Trek Sports. I figure stuff's going to get into my shoes no matter what I wear, but having the freedom of feeling as barefoot as possible during some of those balance and grip-oriented obstacles would definitely outweigh any negatives.
  7. Totally agree--honesty is key. Your students will trust you so more more if you're being honest with them and with yourself. I think also when I first started teaching I was so gung-ho about the style I teach (Moksha) being the RIGHT way, and my identity was really wrapped up in being a Moksha teacher, so I wasn't being really sincere with my teaching. It took me a little while to learn that there is no RIGHT way to do yoga, and it's more important to be open to what you bring to the table and open to what others bring, too. It's easy to look at other teachers who you might really admire and try to "be" them. But your students will sniff out any pretention or insincerity so fast. Figure out who you are and what you bring to the practice and teach from that. Be YOU.
  8. Hey there, Aloha! I ran volunteer fire when I was an EMT in DC, and now I'm training for the CPAT to apply to the Austin Fire Dept after moving here a few weeks ago. The guys I used to run with always said the hardest part is the very first part, the stair climb. I stair climb with a weight vest a couple times a week. Right now I can go two, two and a half minutes before I need to grab the rails. I figure if I can get it to five minutes before the test I should have no problem. Otherwise, the equipment carry, body drag, and door hammer are really the only things I "train" for, and I just basically do a bunch of sandbag and sledgehammer workouts. My sandbag is 35 pounds and I have a 20-lb kettlebell, and I lug both back and forth along my driveway. I whack a tire with my hammer for 10-15 minutes a couple times a week. Beyond that, I think my regular lifting and HIIT is going to pull me through the test pretty well. I kind of wish I had a rope to climb, because I think it'd help with the hose pull, but I'm not willing to shell out 200/month for Crossfit when the lifting gym I go to has everything but a rope for 50/month. Another big tip the guys always told me was to pick a song I love and sing it to myself over and over to get through the maze. I'm not claustrophobic or anything but the idea of the maze definitely gives me the willies.
