  1. I put 1tsp of salt in a pan + water + eggs. Heat until boiling, then time 7-8 mins for 'fudgey' yolk and 10 mins for hard. Just boil them for this time. Beeper goes off, pout out hot water, add cool water. wait a min, then pour of now warm water add another dose of cool and let sit for a while. Come back. Peel. Eat!

  2. Wow, Amy ~ The List sounds like a brilliant idea, and not just for military spouses. I'm so pleased that you and KombiMan have put so much thought into your relationship and the trials this life change will bring, it sounds so... healthy! And grown up :)

How's he liking things so far? Anything awesome to report (just to put the emphasis on the positive)?

And yup, we are all here for you, big time!

  3. I've got a friend who went through the JET program too. It took him multiple tries to get through their interview process, but he made it eventually :) Japan is a pretty competitive market, but it certainly possible to get teaching work there. If you haven't visited already, Dave's ESL cafe is a good first site to look at. It looks like crap, and is full of the most horrible people on Earth, but has some really great info in the forums. Just don't let the negative vibes get you down! (or it might just be the Korea forums that suck, I don't spend much time anywhere else).

Have you taught ESL before? Specifically, have you taught Japanese ESL students before? They can be a difficult bunch to get used to, so if you can get a little taste of it before you go, just to see if you like it, it might be a good plan :)

Edit: Some useful info here. I thought the idea of looking for your university cities Japanese 'sister' city was a good one.

  4. I feel your pain. My boyfriend and I broke up after 6 years just two months ago.

    Thinks that have helped me:

    - Getting out of the house both alone and with others. Walks, work outs, movies, food. It really helps.

    - Cut all ties. I decided that although I feel my ex and I can eventually be friends, I would not talk to him until I felt I'd be comfortable if he got a new partner.

    - I started playing The Secret World, and got a tv show or two that I love to watch. Also, a good series of books. Just depends what you're into, to help keep your mind off things.

You just have to give it time. It will get better. You just have to grit your teeth and make it through the sucky period.

    Hang in there, Skytoad!

  5. Thanks, wesb. I'm going to do this today. Me and my BAS have a bench under a tree picked out already :)

Great reminder of how nice going outside is.

Actually, I'm so inspired/reminded that I might go for a picnic tomorrow (yay, public holidays!).

  6. Sorry guys, but I'm bowing out of this whole30. I'm feeling quite stressed and pressured by life atm, and all the meal planning and everything is making me quite anxious. I just don't have the motivation to make this a priority right now. So, I'll be back to try it again some time, but for now I'm just going to focus on eating less processed foods. I think this'll take some of the pressure off me and I'll actually end up eating better.

I'll stick around to support y'all though :)

  7. I'm so glad you're back, Amy! I actually worried about you, and was hoping that KombieMan joining the Navy hadn't de-railed you completely. Now I see, quite the opposite! You really *DO* deserve the name 'WarriorAmy'!

Erg, sympathy food. My friend was once engaged (didn't last) to a guy in the NZ Navy and every time he went away she would basically do the Whole30 (only we didn't know about it then) for the first two weeks to get her through the food danger zone. Bit more tricky if you've got kids and all the treats and snacks that go with them, though.

Your goals look really sensible - so proud of you for being so strong!

  8. I, in general, hate tea, especially those with caffeine in them (I swear I can taste caffeine).

However, one tea I love is peppermint tea. It's simple, refreshing, and doesn't have a yuck after taste. I like my teas to be pretty peppermint-y, so I leave the bag in while I drink.

Good luck with your tea journey :)

  9. This looks great, Doodle!

I know what you mean about the unhealthy snacks and having less time. I find it's so important to have a healthy snacking option with me, otherwise when the hunger hits, it's too late! I'm currently loving little single-sized cans of tuna or salmon in oil. They're tasty, healthy, and inexpensive (Plus, keep well out of the fridge and travel well). What sort of things are you enjoying - I'm always looking for new ideas :)

  10. *Sigh*

I broke it. Gotta start again :( So, today, day one again.

Yesterday I got a care package from NZ that included handmade NZ chocolates and my favourite chips. I was ok, I put them away to save for the end of the challenge. The I had some kind of emotional breakdown (one of those dumb-ass EVERYTHING is wrong and I'm all alone in a foreign country blah blah blah spiral of doom deals) and ate everything. Yeah, everything. On the upside, I enjoyed it - it was like eating love, and now all temptation is gone from my house.

So, starting today - I had a peach for breakfast (I lie, I ate 3/4 of it and was so full I had to save the rest for later - weird), and a massive sweet potato, cabbage, pork, and olive salad for lunch. I'm now stuffed with lean meat and raw veg :)

  11. Just wanted to add, everyone is totally right and you are not alone in starting at 16! While I was an early bloomer, my current boyfriend didn't have a girlfriend until he was well into his 20's. My previous partner didn't have a 'proper' girlfriend until he was 18, so 16 seems pretty average to me :)

    Way to go!

  12. Thanks for the suggestions guys!

There's only so much olive oil I can add to things, but I'll think about it. And yeah, I might just do the butter.

Yup, salmon's great here, but macadamias are scarce and cost more than gold.

Good ideas - I think I'll try eating more oily fish for starters.

  13. Hey guys,

So I've started the Whole30 along with the rest of the group, and am happily on day two. I'm not new to paleo, but I am trying to really do things well for this 30 days. Now, every time I read someone with a problem with either the Whole30 or paleo/primal (hungry, cravings, no energy, grouchy, whatever) one of the recommended things to check is that you're getting enough fat. I kind of want to get a handle on this before I get problems and eat enough fat. Previously, I haven't worried about this, I've just had olive oil, butter, and meat fat.

But, the possibility of finding organic or free range meat or butter here in SK is practically nill. So, the butter is out (even if I clarify it), and I'm buying leaner meat to try and avoid the nasty factory farming chemicals. The only coconut product I have access to is coconut cream (which I can use, but am not sure how to get it into an everyday meat+veg meal). And avocados, although I love them, cost over $3 a piece.

I can order coconut oil online and have it shipped, but is it worth it? Is there some simple, obvious, healthful fat source I'm either overlooking or unaware of?

  14. I've had a good day one, apart from skipping breakfast. And I look pretty set to not eat too much again this morning. I know they recommend not starting your day with fruit, and I'd planned on having pork and eggs, but I can't face either cooking it or eating it. So, I'll have some watermelon instead. Today's lunch is a ground beef and cabbage salad thing, and dinner will be the pork and eggs I didn't eat for breakfast :)

Egh, I feel pretty awful, though. My 'carb headache' is just starting. Nothing gets rid of this thing, and it usually hangs around for a few days. I'll try roasting a sweet potato tonight with dinner and see if it helps.

Good work, everyone - keep it up!
