  11. A few years ago (july 19, 2010) I put my motorcycle into a wall on the interstate doing around 60mph. I tore almost a pound out of my left thigh. I had to have a wound vac hooked up for months, and a skin graft later. I got the bike fixed, and just stared at it for nearly a year. I started it and changed the oil and sat on it. But I didn't ride it. One day, I got angry with myself for being afraid of something I used to love so much. I went and I got the bike out, and I rode it about a mile, petrified the whole time. I stopped at a gas station and got off and looked at it for a long time. Then I decided that I was going to ride it whether I was scared or not. So I rode it. And I rode it. And I rode it some more. I got to where I could ride without fear, but not without being a little wary. Now I ride all the time, but a different bike. I don't get on the highways much, but when I do I'm not scared, I'm alert. For me, the key wasn't my initial anger, nor even pushing through the fear to keep going. For me, the key to overcoming my fear was to breathe deep, and allow the sheer joy and deep love I have for motorcycles and riding them to displace and nullify the fear. A heart full of joy and love has no space left for fear.
