  1. Food is still going okay, but exercise is not. I'm having a really difficult time with making the time for exercise. Work and family keep crowding it out. It's very discouraging and I feel like giving up on it entirely. I know that anything is better than nothing and I should just do what I can, but being actually satisfied with that feels really impossible. I want to get on a regular routine and see some actual progress, and I feel like I can't do that right now. I really don't know what to do.
  2. Well, this one isn't off to the best start. I had to cover a class today so I was unable to go home at lunch and exercise. I'll try to get something in when I get home this evening, but we'll see. Food is good so far today though. I think over the last few weeks I've been hitting my target 4 days out of 7, give or take, which isn't bad. My weight has been stable +/- 1 lb for the last two months or so, so at least it's not going up. I think during this challenge I'd like to try to hit my target 6 days out of 7. I'll try for 7/7, but realistically I'll be pretty happy if I hit 6. I'll try to get 4 workouts each week. I think that's a reasonable, sustainable goal that has been more or less what I've been able to manage for several years now, so I'm staying with it. It will still be weightlifting for now, although I'm thinking about mixing in some walking. Happy Challenge!
  3. It's Wednesday. I have to cover a class today, so I won't be able to go home and lift weights, but I should have time tonight after work. I think we're going to have to postpone our thanksgiving plans. We were going to go to my beautiful wife's parents, but they're both coughing, so we're probably going to stay away. I hate to do it, but I think it's the best thing to do. I don't have the time or inclination to have a cold right now. Food is good-ish so far today. Protein bar and a cheap cinnamon roll, so higher cals than I like for breakfast, but it's all I had time for. Lunch and dinner will be lighter though, so I think it will even out. By the end of the day yesterday I had gone over by 600 cals, mostly on account of some almonds and cashews I got into. I regret nothing. But it did bump my weight today by a couple of pounds. Thank goodness for data smoothing.
  4. It's Tuesday. I've had the standard breakfast, and a reasonable lunch of gnocchi and some cornbread and a banana. So far I have eaten well this week. Weight is still trending down, so I'm happy with that. I got home at lunch today and did some deadlifts. 3 sets of 5 at 135, 185, 215. Just keeping my hand in. I've been reading books lately about conversation, small talk, that sort of thing. I've never been very good at it, and it occurred to me that this should be a skill that can be learned, so I've set myself to learning it. One thing I'm finding is that I'm better at it than I thought. I just lack confidence, which I am told will come with practice. So I'm determined to be talkier. The book I'm reading now is a different take than the first two. The first two were very much "get you off the ground and moving" books with very practical steps. The new one has a lot of the authors opinions and examples of good and bad conversation from historical persons, so it's more of a wandering path through the gardens of conversation. Eventually I'd like to get my hands on some of the instructional books on conversation that were written in the 1600-1800s. I'm interested in the classical forms, and seeing how they differ from what passes today. I'd love to see what's changed, and what's the same. I'm learning that being an introvert doesn't have to mean that I'm shy, withdrawn, or anti-social. It's an interesting new view.
  5. Some of it is, but they've paywalled some of the features. I haven't seen it myself but I've heard that the barcode scanner is subscription now.
  6. Yes, and the weight tracker has data smoothing too, so it gives you a running average weight with several zoom levels. The calorie tracker has all the features that MFP used to have for free - barcode scanner, build and save recipes, share recipes with friends, copy/paste items from one day to another. It's really well thought-out. I'm very happy with it, and in my opinion it has been worth the money.
  7. It was actually an omlette sammich. Fully cooked. I made it home at lunch and got bench presses done. 4x6@185, not too strenuous. I hope to get a heavier session in later this week, but then my wrists have been a bit complainy so I might just cruise at that level for a while. We'll see. Minor food dilemma today. I have not packed enough lunch, so I need to get something from the snackateria. There's a lot of junk food there, but sometimes they'll also have sammiches that aren't too bad on the calories. I'm tracking calories these days; have been for a little while. I'm using MacroFactor, which I have paid for, which is a good incentive to keep at it. I like the mechanisms of it - it self-adjusts your target based on results on a weekly basis. So far it's been steadily whittling away at my calorie target since I started. It's nice to have some validation about just how little energy I burn in a day. I'm not worried about sticking perfectly to the goal, although when I look back over the weeks, I could definitely stand to do better. I'd like to get a couple of weeks of actually meeting the target, so that the algorithm has some better data to work with, but it's supposed to be designed to make adjustment for how far you are under or over your target. At the other end of it, my weight is actually going slightly down at the moment, so that's not bad for missing the mark two or three days a week. This week I really want to do well.
  8. I had to turn it off after 30 seconds. I'll be supporting USA as long as we're in it, which might not be long, so I'm looking forward to throwing my positive energy behind England soon.
  9. That was all I did that week. Oh well. Moving on. This will be a short work week because of Thanksgiving. Not sure if that will impact lifting for better or for worse, but I have almost not been lifting at all, so it couldn't get *much* worse. There has been a lot of stuff going on lately. Big project at work starting today. Deer hunting season; I hope to go Friday and Saturday although the weather may be bad so I'll have to decide what to do about that. More stuff that I can't remember. I think I want to try to update more often and include some non-exercise oriented stuff. Just because. Yesterday we had a Friendsgiving with our friends, where instead of the traditional dinner they did a massive charcuterie that took up their whole dining room table. I think I didn't eat too badly, although I also didn't bother counting calories. Beyond that I had an egg sammich in the evening, and that was it. I have a new breakfast food routine that seems to be working well. Quest protein bar and a packet of instant oatmeal at about 10 am. So far so good; we'll see how long it goes before I get tired of it and do something else. I kind of hope to keep this one around for a while. I'm hoping to get home at lunch to lift today. I'll let you know if I do.
  10. I'm just catching up on the last month myself. The good news is, we can always improve!
  11. Hello hello. That would be odd. I can't picture it. Keep up the good work!
  12. Those are the best. keep up the good work!
  13. You'll have to post pics of the coop when it's done.
