If only we could count on others to reciprocate said compassion.

Because beating other people up is a felony.

Sitting around and being happy with how much food and children you had was counter-productive in the ancestral environment.
Not belittling other people you meet for their lack of accomplishment probably served to avoid getting your head bashed in in that same environment.

How should I ask for help in UAS if I'm behind on courses but have no good reason for it? I played computer games and generally screwed things over.

1:You haven't been playing video games, you've "been distracted by personal life". 2: You have a hard time asking anyone for help and thusly, fell behind on courses. You wouldn't ask, but you really have a drive to succeed, despite things getting in the way. Those two excuses should help.

I have no love or fun in my life, because my priorities are messed up. I’m missing all the important parts, because my time goes all to the wrong places.

Knowing this is the first step, let the second one be reflecting on the choices you made and whether they were the right ones? It's never too late to decide to turn your life around and focus on other things!

You can change, it just may take a while. Baby steps, and never lose sight of where you want to be.
