  2. Yep, finding my way around the various threads and adding where I think I can provide support and encouragement. So many people doing awesome things! Not sure if I'll teach fitness classes or work more with individuals like me, boomers who want help with lifestyle improvements to stay healthy and independant as long as possible. I've made some nutrition changes, got my blood sugar back under control so able to reduce my medication (type 2 diabetic), lost 25 lbs so far and in the best physical shape of my life. Will keep letting the weight come off, not really working at it but benefiting from the change in food choices. RHR now is 58, and HR recovery in one minute is about 34 BPM so I'm happy with that. thanks for the warm welcome!

  4. I know it's hard to do, but try not to get too caught up in numbers. Focus on making small changes in your lifestyle, maybe cut out a specific food or drink and take it a step at a time. You're working on the long term goal which is to live a healthier lifestyle and that isn't driven by losing X lbs. So often I think we get caught up in "if I just lose X amount, I'll be happier, more attractive or whatever" which is really not that effective for long term sustainment. It's hard to look in the mirror and notice change, so often our view of ourselves is impacted by other factors. Think about your clothes fitting differently, or being able to bend more, do more climb stairs, walk farther than you used to...all of those things are what really matter. Your weight is just a number. People can be unhealthy at any weight, or they can be healthy at any weight. Start from where you are today, and pick one or two things you want to change. Lots of info out there about improving nutrition. if you have a bad day, focus on not allowing it to become a bad week and bad month. Start again tomorrow. It's a journey. You got this!
  5. I bet you'll find lots of support here, my first couple of days as a member but it feels good. I'm on the weight loss journey as well, blood work wasn't great so need to make some changes. Keep in mind that slow and steady is the best route, sometimes things go sideways and you just need to come back on the trail. As my trainer said to me pretty frequently, weight loss is 80% diet and 20% what you do in the gym, so work on making good food choices and that will become a habit.
  6. Awesome!!! Way to go! So very happy for you! One thing that I do when working on weight loss is to take some body measurements - Chest, waist, hips, thighs are good points, then track how many inches I lose as I go. It helps to realize that I didn't just lose X lbs, but I've also reduced my body size by X inches which can be pretty satisfying as well. Just an idea that might help keep you focused. Plus the fun of trying on clothes and finding they are getting too big Losing weight is 80% diet and 20% physical activity, and it takes a ton of work in the kitchen to do food prep so one isn't tempted to do the fast food route because it's easier.
  7. Way to go! Having goals is fantastic. Just be careful that you progress appropriately so you don't get injured. Remember to take rest days from running. Most of the new runners I know follow the 10 minute run, 1 minute walk/recovery model, seems to work for them as they continue to add distance/speed. Being a bigger body you will amplify the pounding on your joints, so try to pick surfaces to run on that are softer - track, grass rather than concrete sidewalks. As you mentioned, be careful with situps, they put a huge strain on your back. Planking is great, work up to doing 3x 1 minute as a good interim goal. I use circuit training in the gym so have some time between each plank that I do. If you start getting bored there are lots of variations of planks you can do to work different parts of the abs/core.   9. Just signed up today, looking for somewhere to get the support and encouragement and the occasional hi five as I no longer have a trainer to provide that. Not new to fitness, I've worked out most of my life but had horrible nutrition, always been overweight. Type 2 diabetic, heading towards retirement so planning to get my personal training certification as I think there are people that I can help who have similar health and fitness issues. Start the course in a few weeks.
  10. Hey, I'm new here as well, and I'm 57. I'm fairly fit right now, although still overweight. Everyone starts somewhere, sometime. I'm focussed on trying to be healthier, have artificial hips so that limits what I can do a bit, no high impact so stuck with cardio machines rather than running. Have some health issues that I can manage through better nutrition. Guess what I'm saying is...you're not alone. Reach out if you need to for support and encouragement.
