Maybe he lives in an area like me where it's currently -35C outside, makes it hard to walk out there. Can be downright dangerous to get winded in this weather. Start breathing heavy and you can frostbite your lungs. Could the guy maybe find a work around, sure. I would.
But you really shouldn't judge the guy so harshly, he wants to better himself, who are we to rip on him.
There are always places to walk. I've been running in an arena when it is really cold (and for the last few days the windchill has been about -35). There are walking tracks there as well as the jogging one. There are always places to exercise without using machines.

My parents have one of these foam pads. I play on it sometimes, and it is quite a workout (granted it is likely beneath you, but I'm enjoying it).

Bison/Buffalo burger is so drool worthy! I wish I had a reliable source here (Fredericton NB), but it may be worth a trip to Halifax if Petes usually has it in stock. We have a local/mostly organic store here where I get the majority of my food, and an awesome farmers market. (http://realfoodsfredericton.ca) if you want to have a look.

Part of me thinks that he could get REALLY hurt doing that, and the other part of me thinks that looks like a LOT of fun...

Neither do yoga mats, sneakers, or the aforementioned sidewalks and freeweights.

You will find a balance that works for you, it may take a while, but keep trying. Again: Paleo is guidelines (and damnit, if I could find the right one, there would be a pirates of the Caribbean vid here, but I can't).
Don't stress about a little bit of rice, or a big bit of rice.

my food processor is a really good Cuisinart one, but it was found at a yard sale. Don't be afraid of buying used at a thrift store, ot yard sale, they can save you a ton of money.

I'm currently detoxing from a vacation (I went away, and couldn't always get primal foods). I came home about 2 lbs heavier than when I had left, most of that is now gone, but the wheat nightmares continue. I'll be happy when they are gone.
I'm also now unsure when I am really hungry. I'm really not enjoying that. I'll be happy when I have everything put back together, and have myself back.

Check the batteries in your scale. when mine start to go, I get all kinds of wonky readings.

ooh! the coconut water sounds like an awesome idea.
I was going to say that paleo isn't really a set of strict rules, but take them more as guidelines. I did. I have milk and cheese, but don't eat grains. Well, once in a blue moon I'll make rice when I'm making a curry or something like that. Everything else for me is veggies (and some meat).

I think that what everyone was saying about intervals/sprints for your cardio is a good suggestion.
and *drools* Dat firefighter...

I like kale or zucchini chips, raw carrots, almonds, berries, apple slices and almond butter, "paleo granola" (from Paleomg). Just a few of the things I snack on...
-
Yup. I always wear mine with toe socks. I wear smartwool ones.

coconut milk
sweet potatoes
salad stuff (lettuce/spinach, carrots, peppers, some sort of protein, whatever you want)
protein (I don't eat enough of it, because I have issues with cooking meat)
Fruits (I like frozen, better bang for my buck here)
nut butter (I like almond)
It isn't easy starting out, but you will quickly learn what your staples are. Mine are sweet potatoes, carrots, and coconut milk. Carrots are my go-to snack (or apples and almond butter when I have apples). I have some sort of soup almost every night for dinner (slow cooker sweet potato is my current favourite), and a salad almost every day for lunch. I get a bunch of my protein through nut butters, other plant sources, and milk/yogurt (Doing the primal thing right now, only way I can balance everything/not have to cook meat. I love meat, but not cooking it. I had a bad experience with food poisoning).

drink more water. It really helped me with sugar cravings. Not too sure how it works, but it did for me.

Welcome! The locals are all friendly, and will always have recipes to share if you get stuck in a rut!

That is AWESOME!! I love that goal.
(frantically adds 500 miles to my running playlist)

If you have a pasta problem, use spaghetti squash. I actually like it better than noodles with red/meat sauce.
hmmm... I should see if I have one, I might like pasta tonight.

I'm aiming for 3 workouts a week, but willing to see what my body thinks about it. I love my VFFs but today my calfs hate me. I know it will take me a while to get it all back, but I want to be able to do 5 kms on the trails by the time the snow goes. Then I can build up from there. I much prefer running outside, but the track in the rink is preferable to the thought of a treadmill. At least it still feels like I'm going somewhere.
-
I'm a self-confessed cardio junky. I love running (outside). I can't handle treadmills, but I can run inside on a track if outside isn't an option.
I always feel better after a run. Somehow everything comes to a resolution when I am out.

I love mine with toe socks. I think because they are a teeny bit too big (and I hate wearing shoes without socks). I have a few pairs of smartwool toe socks that I adore. I think that is helping keep the VFF-Funk to a minimum. Showering with them sounds like an awesome idea to keep them clean... I'll have to try it out. (or stuff them in a bucket while I shower)

I fell off the wagon a few months ago, so I want to get back into training. Simple as that. I want to be able to run like I did last year. Further if possible. I had forgotten the simple joy of being able to run (well... jog). It makes me peaceful, and hopeful, not a ball of stress.
I have found an indoor arena with a track (not my first choice, but my first choice is buried under 2' of snow). I went today and without my puffer (big mistake), I made it 1.5 miles after not having trained in about 2 months.

I sometimes make a chicken BLT salad (pick a green, add bacon, lettuce, tomato), and always top it with a herb vinagrette.
What else..
carrots, avocado, peppers, chicken, bacon (if I have it), beets... sunflower seeds, pepitas (hulled pumpkin seeds)...
I usually take a little of whatever I have kicking around in the fridge and add it to a base of lettuce.
For dressing, I always have herbs and olive oil, and vinager (pick your oil and vinager), sadly I eyeball it, so I can't really post the recipe.
I use so little greens in a salad, they are more of a teeny base for all the "stuff" on top.

The trick I have found with corded earbuds is that they have a long enough split cord to be able to slip over your head, and to use the slider to hold them at the back of your neck. (http://s3.amazonaws.com/zagg-images/images/accessories/audio/zaggbuds/smartbuds-black-back.jpg) like the pic in the link, it holds the buds in really nicely. When I was running today, it made all the difference in the world. I really miss my zagg buds, but they had a good life. I broke them in the metals studio.
Deodorant troubles

Do you have Lush nearby? their products are usually good, and made with no chemicals. I have lots of experience with their lotions, bathbombs, bodywash, body powder, but haven't tried their deodorant before.
