  1. I went on an adventure today, looking for winter running clothes. I stopped at a bunch of places a few hours from where I live, because the stores here suck.

I went into old navy. I was looking for tights/compression pants, and I found a decent looking pair, really comfy (I haven't really worn tights before), so I tried them on. The because I hate "the jiggle" (on my thighs and bum) when I run, I spent a few minutes giggling in the change room as I was jumping around trying to see if they stopped "the jiggle". They did. So I bought 2 pairs. I hope that they wear well, they weren't really expensive (about $30), but I don't want to have to replace them once a month...

  2. Do you guys have a farmers market nearby? We have one here, and I can get meat for about 1/2 the price as it is at the grocery store. It is what is saving me... if I know I can get cheap meat (hehehe).

When I started paleo, I was hungry a LOT, and I ate more, but then everything leveled out, and I'm not as hungry as often, nor do I eat as much as I used to. It just takes some time to get used to.

  3. I went on a long winter running gear shopping spree today, and bought 2 pairs of compression tights from Old Navy (they feel awesome, and were fairly cheap), a new tech shirt (long sleeved), and a running jacket (compression fit). I ended up spending about $150, but that is a heck of a lot less than I was expecting to. I'm hoping that it all wears fairly well, but I'm looking forward to trying it all out.

I have an icebreaker hat that I've had for years (nice and light), I'll dig it out when it hits below 0, and I just need to find a pair of gloves. I'm thinking the "one size fits most" from the dollar store. That way if I lose one, it won't really matter.

  4. So tonight I was trying to fix the dryer timer at Mum and Dad's place tonight, and my Mum looked at me as I hoisted myself from out behind the dryer, and said "holy crap are you ever scrawny".

So I guess there is a parental woot, and a hoisting/getting out of a tight space woot to be had!

My Mum isn't totally supportive of my diet/lifestyle, working out, or running, so for her to say anything about my change is huge. She is somewhat paleo (not in those words) already, so when I go home for supper (not very often), it isn't ever pasta, or bread-based, so I can at least eat there. My running scares her, but tonight she's really acknowledged that I have made a huge change in the last few months.

  5. There's something I'm going to have to get used to is running with my phone. I love that I don't take it with me now, it is my time to "unplug". I run with my iPod nano (which has nikeplus), and my door keys and that's it. Then again I don't wear too much when I run in the summer (lululemon capris, and a cheap tanktop), but once I get into hoodie season, I'll have more pockets.

  6. Welcome!

I struggled with the beginner bodyweight workout, it took me weeks to get up to the "base" that Steve posted. Then I discovered my love of running, and haven't looked back. Fencing is awesome, keep up with your squats, and lunges, and you'll be in great shape for it (fenced for about 5 years, coached for 2).

This challenge is ending soon, so I'd wait, and start fresh with the new one (if you want to do the challenges), there is usually a write up on it come time for the next one, but basically you pick 3 fitness goals (could be anything), and one life goal (read more, study more, save money, pay down debt etc) that you think you can do in 6 weeks.

  7. for your feets sake, I would recommend them, but it is entirely up to you. Besides, merino just plain feels good to wear. (I have merino tanktops, yoga pants, hoodies... you name it, I probably have it. I'm a bit of a natural fibre junkie (except for my lululemon running pants)

Another upside is that it is naturally anti-microbial, so they won't smell, and seem to keep my shoes from getting too stinky too...

  8. Totally WD-40... lol

My honest suggestion would be for you to get your feet "done" by a aesthetician. Not in the pink polish way, but they also scrape down callouses, and that sort of thing. If you are wearing white cotton socks (or cotton of any kind on your feet) please stop. Look into merino socks (my favourite brands are Smartwool and Icebreaker). They wick moisture away from your feet instead of it just sticking there, and aggravating them. NO MORE COTTON.

If you can handle it, I would also suggest that you vaseline your callouses every night before bed (now is a good time for cotton socks), grease them up good, and slap on a pair of socks. One of my army friends swears by foot powder, he says it saved him on his rucksack marches, because there is a drying agent in it. If you use your egg-thingy, don't forget to moisturize after, because you are exposing new skin.

  9. If you don't like C25K (I don't either), is just go out an run till you're tired, and the next time, go and try to stay out a little longer.

What I did was run till I was out of breath, then walked until i had just about caught my breath, and repeated that a few times. Every time I went out, I could run a little further, and the walks became shorter and shorter. Then I decided that I didn't feel like walking anymore, so I just ran.

  10. Think of how many bees that would be. According to Google it is over 3 million. Now, think of all your enemies. You can mail them jars of live bees. Or, for the more conventionally minded, think of how much honey you could get from 3 million bees. (By the way, the answer is 120 pounds of honey a day, granted there are enough flowers nearby) http://easthillhoney.com/2011/11/05/how-many-bees-does-it-take-to/

I'd never though about mailing jars of live bees to my enemies, but you make a really good point. Much like the Spanish Inquisition, no one ever expects bees.

  11. Sorry for the double post, I thought of something to add.

I totally understand where you are coming from Kat, I'm sitting here trying my damndest to not go out for a run tonight, because in my new training plan, I have a long run tomorrow, and I actually have to take 2-3 days off a week from running, and it just feels wrong. It is so nice out right now, so I will probably try and go for a walk after supper, if I still feel like I need to go out.

  12. You have to get your body ready to run, as dumb as it sounds. At least I did. When I started (back in May, so I'm hardly an expert), I ran 3 days a week, and did the beginner bodyweight routine 3x a week, and rested the extra day. That way, I worked out almost every day, but it wasn't always the same thing. I tried to rush c25k and burned out about week 6 last year. I was running every 36 hours, instead of every 2 days like it suggests, and never allowed myself any time for proper recovery, and just totally burned out. If you have the urge to do something on your non-run days, then go for a walk, do bodyweight/weight exercises, do something, but don't run every day yet.

Now I run 5-6 days a week (I'm trying to increase my milage and cut back on workouts), and do bodyweight stuff (never enough, but I like running better) 2 days a week.

  13. I really want to do a half marathon... and I too have been looking up training plans (mine is 4 months away, in the dead of winter). My longest run to date is 11 kms. I figure if I aim to increase my furthest distance by 5 kms a month, I will be ready in plenty of time.

The only part that scares me about a half marathon in Feb is the fact that we get a lot of snow, and it gets really cold. I'll do a 5K in january (for the running jacket that comes in the kit). Then at least I may have slightly more proper running clothes. I have to be registered by Dec 1 for the half (hyopthermic half marathon), so I should know by then if I stand a chance of making the distance.

  14. I've only been at this 3 months, but in a year, I'll come back and see... I want implants to put my boobs back to where they were... I know that, and I'm hoping that my hard work will be able to deal with my tummy and thighs.

Apart from that, I would never get LASIK, because my glasses give me something to hide behind (I've tried contacts, and I can't hide in them), I don't really have to worry about excess hair anywhere, so really a boob job is all I really want.

  15. I wish I could say that my body was fighting back like that. I don't eat at fast food very often (twice a month), I've given up pasta and pizza, but this morning all I can think about is a mocha or a chai frappe from Starbucks. It is all I want. It has been a year since I had one, and usually I'd go for it, but I have to go to a wedding tonight, and i have no idea what kind of food will be there (I'm actually really worried about that). I'll have my salad for lunch, and it will have to do.

The only side effect of my eating crap is a bit of bloat for a few days... I almost wish that it did make me sick, then it would be easier to kick.

  16. Every time I see this topic, I know I can't wait to be a skinny bitch. I'm going towards it, slowly but surely. I want to be a strong skinny bitch and kick some ass.

...except for the odd wrinkles on my tummy, they could go, like yesterday, and I'd be happier.

  17. I want to go as Carmen Sandiego... I've been trying to source the needed bits and pieces for a while, but nothing has quite met my standards yet.

I have no where to go, and no job to dress up for, but I love costume planning. Almost more than the actual going out part...
