hey guys!
i found nerd fitness when i was just googling "how to have a healthy diet" one day when i felt motivated to eat a little healthier. ever since then, i've been lurking around nerd fitness's blog posts for a while, trying out some various ideas to get healthier and lose weight. since the articles always hype up the nerd fitness forums, and everything is crazy due to covid-19, i thought i'd finally get involved! this is my first time (and i know that a new nf quest hasn't been announced yet) so i hope i'm doing this right, but i figured i'd set myself up this weekend for a quest.
as a child of the 2000s, i am loving the renaissance of avatar the last airbender and percy jackson (though i'm pretty skeptical of how good the disney+ show is gonna be... still scarred from the movies tbh). i'm generally a science nerd (biology for the win!). i'm a bio major in college and watch a lot of forensic science, though it's probably too squeamish for me in real life (in terms of job prospects, so I'm not thinking of that as a career choice). did you know that a company named parabon nanolabs can take your dna and come up with a rough computer-generated sketch of what you look like, including eye color, hair color, race, and rough face shape?? both cool and real scary...
i also really like to swing dance (lindy hop, specifically). i was hoping to start doing some footwork drills to improve my social dancing, but unfortunately it seems like it's going to be a long time before dancing happens again. other than that, i play viola and have resurrected my metaphorically dusty minecraft iphone app. i made a cute little world in survival with a farm, some bees, and i just got the material to start crafting potions!! it's very relaxing and fun to play around with after a hard day of sitting in zoom lecture all day :///
to be completely honest, i've been trying for a few years to lose weight. recently, i feel like i've been making significant changes in my health habits and diet (following the nf diet cheat sheet, working out, counting calories), but i haven't been seeing that progress on the scale. i'm trying not to let it get to me, because i know that a healthy lifestyle is about your habits, not just your weight (and i'm only a little overweight - probably only need to lose ~20 pounds). it's just frustrating, because according to the math, i should be seeing results, but unfortunately nothing is happening. i'm hoping that by getting involved in challenges and community and starting to level up my fitness alongside my diet, i'll start to see some results
my current main quest is to lose weight. the supporting goals to achieve this main quest are
1) I want to eat less than 150 g of carbohydrates for 6 out of 7 days for the 4 weeks of the quest
2) I want to eat protein and veggies with every meal for 6 out of 7 days for the 4 weeks of the quest
3) I want to do a basic pilates program (we have a workout book I'm planning on using) T, Th, and Sat/Sun for the 4 weeks of the quest
my "level up my life" quest is to improve my mental health. specifically, i want to meditate every day for the 4 weeks of the quest (using the Headspace app).
I hope I organized the whole "main quest and 2-3 subquests" bit correctly. if there's any tips y'all have for organizing this better, let me know
thanks guys! let me know if i did everything okay or if there's anything y'all usually do that i can add (or be in the know for next time). really excited to start connecting and joining the rebellion with all y'all!
