  1. Your problems sound unfun.

I bet you know someone who's good at auto mechanics who could help you out with your scooter (I bet this because it seems like there's always one guy/girl like that in every circle of acquaintances). Don't be afraid to ask them. While life may be difficult, you'd be surprised at what you can overcome with patience, perseverance, and a lot of help from other people because seriously human beings are not physiologically or psychologically designed to handle life all on their own.

  2. After seeing the way the gym is stocked at this camp I'm definitely going to have to research some workouts to do with no equipment what-so-ever.

Well, I can't imagine where you would start. For that kind of thing, you'd have to find some sort of fitness group which was practically entirely focused on developing strength and agility with minimal to no equipment. But, seriously, where are you going to find that?

(Seriously, bro, we're here for you, and we have so many tips that we all love to share. Don't hesitate to ask about ANYTHING, especially in the Bodyweight Strength Training forum)

  3. Welcome! A tip with the goals that involve "every day" or "every meal": if you miss a day (and hopefully you won't), then forgive yourself and start right back up the next day. A guy who misses a day halfway through and gives up makes his goal for 20 days. A guy who misses a day halfway through and keeps going makes his goal for 41 days.

    Kick butt, sir!

  4. Yes. I'm going to do my best to somehow prepare myself for getting wet so that I can try things that may be beyond my level. Step 1 is not taking my phone alone. Step 2 is...Idunno. I can't get new shoes here, and barefoot running here is decidedly unsafe for beginners. I'll work on it.

Also, my wordcount is going to jump up considerably tomorrow when I get my chapter finished. Seriously, the suspended wordcount is already at 2000+.

  5. Another thing to help you with pistol squats: plyometric squats, or "squat jumps". Basically, they're just a bridge between regular squats and one-legged squats. And, if you want to add some fun to it, make them burpees.

  6. COMPLETE

    Level: Mosquito River 1

Mission: Last 30 minutes without losing any sync

FAILED - Full Sync Condition: Don't get wet!

So, uh, translation, today I went to practice jumps/momentum down by the rocky river. It was...difficult. I ran out of steam about ten minutes in, so I slowed down a lot. The beginning part was easy, but a ways down, most of the rocks are very loose. I basically couldn't even walk without causing them to come tumbling down, much less run and jump. Anyway, it was 20 minutes in when I finally slipped off a small rock after a precision jump. I stayed on my feet, but in the river they went. And, let me tell you, slippery shoes that don't have good grip in the first place absolutely SUCK for this sort of thing.

But I stuck out the 30 minutes, even though I had to take up the last 60 seconds or so with pure jogging. So, that's one out of three for this week!

    Blugh post-workout crash bluuuuuuh

EDIT: First post now contains weekly logs so YOU can watch me succeed (there is no 'or fail').

  7. The gymnasium that's part of the place I'm staying in has climbing ropes. I can't quite climb them yet (getting really close!), but they're great for helping my balance when I hold onto them. I don't always need them anymore, but when I do, they're there.

Lots of people use rings. You can use anything though. A window ledge, the back of a couch. NerdFitness Steve uses poles a lot. Anything to hold onto to keep you steady, and maybe add a little extra push (make every effort to wean yourself off that ASAP, though).

  8. "Half-gnome" implies a very awkward home situation, one way or another.

Also, if you're looking for a new hobby, allow yourself to buy new chainmail with the caveat that you can only buy the rings, and you have to weave the chainmail yourself. Some of my friends find it very rewarding! Of course, I balk in horror at it, so YMMV.

  9. The assassin strolled down a quiet street. The village was intact, but devastated by great calamity. There were many walls of stone, some intact, and some destroyed. The river was half stopped-up with rocks. Many places of the forest were littered with fallen trees sticking out at all angles. The assassin took to high perches, surveying the land, and mapping it in his mind. His skills would be useful here indeed. And, as he saw the fear on the faces of the villagers as he passed by, he wondered how soon he would need to use them.

    ---------------------

    Today's workout:

    Warmup:

10 burpees (okay, actually, it's more: I kept losing count!)

    10 inverted rows, plus 1 rope pull-up

20 second planche-arm plank (those are so much harder than I thought!)

    90 second jog

    Exercises:

2 sets of 5 pistol squats + 1 set of 5 plyo pistol squats (very sad ones, but proper form at least)

    2 sets of 3 incline one-arm pushups + 1 set of four

3 sets of 5 2-ft box jumps (actually, I think it's more than 2 feet...gotta measure those stairs)

    1 set 2 pull-ups + 4 sets 1 pull-up

    3 hollow holds, 30, 25, and 20 seconds

Also, today I went parkour-scouting, though I didn't do any parkour (hoping to do it tomorrow, but I'll just run if it's too dark by the time I get back). I found some great bouldering walls, and this really cool rock field with a fallen tree that leads to some weird rock valley and I have to see it it looks so cool.

I can't believe I haven't made my way here yet. I really like your goals; solid and no nonsense, only ass kicking. One of my friends did NaNoWriMo a few years back; it looked like an incredibly intense, yet incredibly rewarding endeavor. We are all rooting for you here!

Sweet character sheet, by the way... did you envision this as a webcomic or a print comic?

The comic is sort of both. Whatever you may think of his writing, I admire Aaron Diaz as an artist, and his ability to use infinite canvas and still create a for-print comic is something I plan (not want; PLAN) to have in the future. But, basically, I want to stick to enough conventions of the superhero comic industry that it's somewhat recognizable as a superhero comic. It will be a webcomic if it ever ends up existing.

[EDIT]: Your writing reminds me of Tom Stoppard :-D

  10. It took me over a month to go from 0 pull-ups to one, and that was after I started targeting them specifically. I second the recommendation to lower your goal. Setting achievable goals is better for you than anything else.

A good thing to do for pull-ups is negatives. Start at the top, then lower yourself as slowly as possible. If you're like me, the first time you do it, you'll be halfway down before you even begin to slow your descent. Just keep at it.

Who knows? It's possible that you'll go from 0 to 5 in six weeks, if your diet is amazing and you train like a boss. But 'possible' and 'reasonable' aren't exactly the same thing.

  11. re Full Lotus: being able to get into full lotus is an awesome thing! However, the gap from getting into it and being able to do it without pain is a big one. If it causes knee stress, don't do it for extended periods of time. Keep opening up those hips. If you overreach, you can end up injuring your knees. I bet you like your knees. It would be a shame if something happened to them.

(*considers renaming lotus pose "the tire iron"*)
