  1.

I wonder how he was worshipping...

The gods of gains are fickle beasts.

Tested both today. Got the heaviest I have since April, so that's good. Time to work toward my next meet in October.

    Snatch: 70, 75x, 75x

    Clean and jerk: 95, 100, 105x

  2. My training cycle was terrible this last round with sickness and a nagging injury.  I literally started squatting again three weeks ago after a month off completely and another month and a half of workouts with no squats.

That being said, I've felt better this week.  And my gym decided to test maxes this Saturday.  And it's Singlet Saturday.

So I guess I'm in.  Not expecting spectacular, but it'll be nice to get heavy.  :)

Thanks for the compliment (and Seth Rollins Crossfit Jesus gif) Wolfie, but much as I'd like to let it sink in, there's Crossfitting badasses like @Rurik Harrgath and @Niccolo who put my performance and consistency to shame.

    I'm flattered, Mr. RaideR.

However, the last few months have been...rebuilding for me.  I've had sickness and injury to overcome.  Hopefully, things will get better soon, since I just caught bronchitis.  /ugh

  4. Do you want me to post the dandelion wine recipe as well? Dandelion and burdock is also popular but usually only fermented to about 0.5% although I see no reason you couldn't go further.

Other interesting (pre hop) english ingredients include stuff like nettles, bog myrtle, sage and rosemary (both of which may have a similar preservative effect to hops). Oh and parsnips which is apparently pretty good! My mother in law has tried parsnip wine.

I've also heard you can (in the US) add sassafras(sp?) like with rootbeer to get a beer with the same flavour.

I found several recipes for dandelion wine online, but I would love to see yours too.

I've never thought to make herb wines before, but I definitely want to try those.

Sassafras isn't native to my part of the country (northwest), but I may be able to track some down. It would be interesting to brew with.

  5. From my experience, using baking yeast is not ideal, but works well for first brews.  The flavor will be a bit different than you'd expect if you used wine-specific yeast.  Also, it may not go after all of the sugars and fully digest them into alcohol.  Nothing bad, but may not end up exactly as the recipe ordered.

One thing to watch out for is, as I mentioned above, you may not get a full fermentation because the mixture may have too little nutrients in it.  If the yeast doesn't have enough nutrients, they can start to cannibalize the dead yeast, which can create a soapy flavor.  Many wine fermentations need to add yeast nutrients in order to ensure that the little buggers don't start eating each other.

I'd recommend going to a homebrew store (if your local regulations allow them) and picking up some wine yeast (looks like white wine yeast and yeast nutrient would work well from a recipe I found) from them next time.  Also, the owners of the stores are super knowledgeable and super helpful, so spending some time picking their brains could help out.  If you don't have stores, you can probably find the yeast and nutrients online somewhere.

Either way, good luck and have fun!  Oh, I also found out that gorse is an invasive species where I live.  Could you share the recipe?  If I can do my part for the environment and help control this species by making it into wine, I will consider it my civic duty!

  6. Ermagherd I placed better than @Niccolo because he was a sicky peg on the last workout!

Now I need to know where @Rurik Harrgath placed....I might even take NFCrossfit Open winner!

Suuure. Take advantage of my sickness to beat me. 2018 will come sooner than you think!

I'll get you next time, Endor Ranger!!!

  7. Well, I came down with the plague this week, so I can't do the last workout in time for it to count. :( I can barely stand for more than a few minutes, so a workout like this is certainly out of the question. Oh well. Health is more important than the Open. I'll come back next year, hopefully healthy for the entire 5 weeks.

    Good job everyone!

  8. 2 cal PR, nice job!

Damn it now I regret taking too much rest on the wall balls!! [emoji14] I really need to improve those.

How long did the deadlifts take you?

My back is shot to shit this morning.

The deadlifts were about 3-4 minutes. I did sets of 5 with 5-8 seconds rest between. Wall balls were sets of 8ish. Just didn't have my usual strength on the row.

  9. I'm excited for the repeat!  Looking forward to trying to beat my score from last year. :)

I really enjoy my box's Friday Night Lights setup.  They run heats all afternoon from about 3 to 9 pm with big crowds watching and cheering the entire time.  They also bring in a DJ and have party lighting going on the entire time.  It's a trip working out there. :D

Seriously though, I remember you doing really well in the Open last year, at least compared to me so I've had my eye on your scores. It's fun to have someone to chase even if you know you're unlikely to hunt them down! I'm pleased to have caught you up a bit this year but I think the workouts have favoured me and you've not been on top form. Your lifts are a lot heavier than I can manage at this stage too but "I'll get you next time Gadget"!

    Dude.

You have no idea how much your post means to me.  I seriously had to take a moment after reading it, because it sounds so much like me.

I’ve spent years chasing my rabbits, trying to catch them.  I’ve managed to beat them on a few workouts that favored me, but as I got better, so did they.  It’s pushed me to find precision (which I still don’t have), find strength, and find speed that I didn’t know I had just to keep up.

I never thought that I could be that person for someone else.

So, thank you, sincerely, for saying this.  It means so much, especially with how beaten down I’ve been feel during the Open this year.

Well, c’mon and I’ll lead you on a merry chase.

  11. I kept it RX, but I haven't done many pull ups over the last few months, and it really showed.  It feels like that's what killed me in 17.3.  The 95 lb snatches were pretty easy, even if I missed a few due to depth (stupid stiff hips).  But, as the pull-ups went on, I wasn't able to keep them controlled and started swinging wildly.  I need to work on that, since it cut my sets down to 3-4 reps.

I was able to get a few reps into the 135 lb snatches, but not much beyond that.  Just completely ran out of time.

    Still had fun though.  :)

They're busy with their re-do's to try to beat me!! :P  I'm sure @Niccolo is crushing it ;)

HA!   Haha!  Hahaha!  You funny guy.

Yeah, I've been doing okay, considering I'm coming back from sickness.  I barely got to the MUs in 17.2 with 30 seconds left.  I didn't hit either of the two attempts I was able to get on it.  I would have liked to get more time to rest, but lunges hate me.

Oh well.  I'm hoping for something heavy, something oly for 17.3. :)

  13. The singlet is a "space armor" one from Lift Big Eat Big. It fits pretty well and looks awesome so I like it. :)

The knee sleeves are from Hookgrip. $12-15 a pair and they provide a bit of compression and warmth. My knees had some issues and these helped get past that.

It's in February at some point. I'll schedule it toward the second half so people can plan around when they're doing it since I've been out of touch. Ignore this post if it's been taken care of already, this is the first thing I ended up clicking on today on my first day back.

Hope it's not too late, I just had a meet last weekend that I'd hope would count.... :)

    And congrats on the offspring!!!!
