  1. Hey guys, I wanted to tap into the collective Assassin Brain here and ask for your input. I'm planning on building an iPhone app [eventually android too] for parkour workouts. It's going to be free, and I'm hoping really fun. I havn't even built my first iphone app yet, so this is a ways off [although this is what I am planning to do for work eventually]. But I'm in the planning stage, and I've always found that having a fun project makes learning a new programming language a lot faster. I really like the format of the Gain Fitness app as far as the way it walks you through it, and for customizing your workout plan, but I wanted to build something parkour-specific, similar to the WOD from APK. I was also toying with the idea of making some sort of storyline aspect like Zombies, Run. [but obviously not zombies, becuase that is already taken.] So my question is this: What would YOU like to see as a feature of an iPhone parkour app? in addition to workouts, something like a mapping feature for user-imputed jam sites? I'm open to any ideas, i'm in the brainstorming phase!
  2. Hi everyone. I'm in the process of indexing my bookshelf and wanted to make a little poll what everyone is using to keep a list of their books. Currently i'm trying out some apps on android but most are lackign an export to html feature.
  3. Greetings! I'm interested in doing some Maffetone inspired aerobic training. This means cardio that maxes out at 180 - age (143 for me this year). I got a fancy new bluetooth heart rate monitor. I've not yet found an Android app that will allow me to set an alarm at a certain heart rate and have it notify me either via vibration or audible alert. Does anyone have an app they can point me to? I have the Polar App but I don't see a way to set alarms I have a couple HRV apps but none will track exercise I have Track My Fitness but it says it will import Polar data but it doesn't look kike it connects directly

  5. I'm slightly fed up with pen & paper, so I'd like to switch to an android app for logging my workouts, in the hope that it will be more efficient. However, I've checked out several so far, and none have met my needs: Ability to log lifting sessions AND conditioning workouts in the same app.No ads (I'm perfectly willing to pay for the app, though).Quick, straightforward interface.Ability for me to plan workouts ahead, then check off things as I do them (editing on the fly to reflect what I actually did if I go off plan).Ability to change the date/time of a pre-planned workout without re-entering the workout I plan to do.Doesn't require integration with my smartwatch, social media accounts, etc.Doesn't require location to be on during my workout (even if I were to do a hike or trail run, I'll enter it manually kthx)The level of permissions requested by the app must be reasonable and un-creepy.Bonus points if it has a 1rm calculator or other useful tools like that.Any suggestions?
  6. ... do you use an app? What one would you recommend? When I was tracking calories, I used loseit.com, but it's not really set up for easy macro viewing (and it doesn't have an Android version that's usable outside the US). Going to try tracking macros as well as I realised my protein intake still sucks and I'd prefer to make that my primary goal, with calories secondary, for a while.
  7. So I hated my arm band and I now have a DROID Turbo with a lifeproof case so it is rather large. I recently bought this: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1061140280/fitholster-lose-the-armband-weight-lifting-running It's a good idea, but my phone is so heavy that it pulls my pants down when I run. I've seen those waist bands but none of them look big enough to hold my phone. Any recommendations?
  8. Does anyone use any phone apps for interval training? Any suggestions? I'd like something that, in addition to acting as a timer/stopwatch, would track each interval too. Thanks!
  9. Fit Intro: As a kid, I sucked at everything sport related and was known at my school for failing almost every time on P.E. The last couple of years I have discovered that I actually do love to push my body, but that I'm not a fan of team sports. I love dancing, yoga and strength training(free weights and body weight). Nerd Life Intro: I recently graduated as an Android and Java Developer, but still taking on extra courses like JavaScript. Programming is computers + puzzles and therefor awesome. I love reading fantasy and scifi and playing RPG's like WoW and Divinity (it's Belgian!). Civ V is another favorite (and The Sims, but sssh). My gaming skills are not nearly what I want them to be but I enjoy myself. I also love drawing, painting (both mostly nudes) and spending way too much time on Tumblr. Main quest: A nicer face I have always had pretty problematic skin and it is mostly my own fault. I have troubles sitting still and one of the things I do is touch my face all of the time, this causes my skin to break out and off course I can't stay away from those spots either... The circle continues. count: 2 for CHA for progress Missions: Clean: Every morning I will clean my face with water and apply tonic and day cream. Every evening I will clean my face with coconut oil. count: 2 for STA for doing this every day Don't touch: I am only allowed to touch my skin when I'm doing one of the above routines. count: 3 for CON More new faces: Last New Year I got a large easel from my parents and although I choose this present myself it still hasn't left its' box. I love painting but I don't do it often enough and it's a shame. Therefor I challenge myself to make at least 3 new paintings on my easel in the next 6 weeks. count: 3 for WIS Life quest: Get a job and move out First job, then move out, so this mostly means applying for a lot of jobs, creating stuff to add to my resume and improving my skills count: 3 for CHA, 2 for looking for jobs, 1 if I actually get one Side quest: Create my own android app and publish it in the store I didn't finish it last challenge, so I'm doing this again. count: 2 point for WIS Motivation: I want to be amazed by what my body is capable of, what I am capable of. I want to proof that I am not lazy and that I can do anything if I put my mind to it. This will be a serious challenge of persistence but I like challenges! Why be less when you can be more? Important notes: "You tag this with fatloss but I see no fatloss related missions?" I am continuing this pvp and will post progress on that here as well."What about your flexibility? No more scary gifs?" I love training my flexibility but it is has become a habit instead of a challenge. When I post about what I did that day a report on my human snake progress and some gifs might still be included.
  10. Hey everyone! I've been playing Ingress for the past few months, and it's great. It's put out by NiaticLabs, an internal startup at Google. Basically it's a location based augmented reality game, kind of like a giant global capture the flag between the Enlightened and the Resistance. You try to capture portals, create fields, and destroy portals of the other team. The best part of this game is that it is GPS based, so you actually have to go to the place. Already it has motivated me to take a more winding path or go out for an extra walk to get to that one portal the other team has claimed. I always find that game or achievement based motivations work better for me than just telling myself to go out for a walk. I wanted to see if anyone else on the site is playing. If it sounds cool to you, and you have an Android device (tough luck iphone users), I'm happy to send you an invite to join. I currently have eight available. And you should join the Enlightened, because we're awesome.
  11. Rebels! I know that there are a fair share of us Geeks and Programmers out there! I am rallying you together to help take this forum to the next level! Software Engineers get your mobile platform engines up and running! Let's take the REBELLION MOBILE! Let's make this an online collaboration so that we can all openly contribute! What better way to strengthen the Rebellion than by using our strengths? Some Key Features to start with: Shopping List Forum Picture Posting using Mobile Camera Check your Messages (not IM) Track progress/goals on your Challenges Workout plans Stretching/Exercise Demos (either illustrations or videos) Metrics Tracker (input your weight, measurements and have a BMI/BF output feature) I am sure that there are millions more ideas but these seem the most pertinent to me. I travel a lot for my job (going to remote sites to do server inspections and check on port security) so having this all available on my phone would be great! That way, I don't have to pull out my computer every morning and log my weight/measurements and track my meals. Fellow Rebels, let me know what you all think! I can design some cool UI concept drawings if it will help at all, but my programming skills are very limited! I am rallying you all to help! Help me Rebel Engineer-kenobis, you're my only hope! (self kudos for proper use of you're) This is a very basic idea for the app: http://ibuildapp.com/projects.php?action=info&projectid=660110
  12. The throw-for-height, a classic of the Highland Games, now on your phone. Wait, what? It's called Send Me To Heaven and Apple banned it for being frakking stupid. So if you've got a rugged Android in an Otterbox on a soft beach, and no common sense at all, this is for you. http://www.engadget.com/2013/08/06/send-me-to-heaven-kill-your-phone-for-points/ It has to be a good clean throw and you have to catch it. Aspiring Heavy Gamers could lash their phones to a cinderblock or beer keg for verisimilitude... (I have no entries yet, but I did dent the ceiling)
  13. Hey there, my hubby and I both have Samsung Galaxy phones (3 for him 4 for me). I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good app for weight training? Like a virtual trainer and log in one. But customizable. Hubby works 7 days on 7 days off at his job with 12 hour shifts so every other week I will be going it alone at the gym. I don't mind paying for a good app. Is JeFit worth the $6.99 or is there another one worth checking out? I'm asking here because ALL the apps seem to be rated nearly 5 stars. So there's nothing to really differentiate between them for me.
  14. With a new 6 week challenge on the horizon and Steve mentioning one of his goals is to work on meditation, I thought I'd introduce a tool that's been helpful in my practice. Let me preface this by saying I am in no way affiliated with the following app and receive no monitory compensation. This is simply something I have found useful, that I hope can help improve your practice and bring us all a little closer. It can also be had completely free of charge. I'd been meditating for a good long time, and had my head all jumbled up with one too many techniques. So much so that I found my practice too active, lacking focus and basically diverging from the very meditative experience I was going for. I longed for simplification and guidance. Committing to daily meditation, a fan of metrics and appreciating the value sites like RunKeeper have had on my training, I got to looking for an app that would track my meditation sessions, keep a log and gently manage timing. After experimenting with a few apps I settled on Insight Timer, an app that has exceeded my expectations. Originally a free app, and now available in both a free and paid versions, Insight Timer does all the basics and then some: Keeps a log (also recorded to an online profile you create)Times your sessionsTracks your progress with charts and statisticsCan provide meditation remindersShows worldwide meditation activity of Insight Timer usersAllows you to join/create meditation groupsHelps you make meditation friends, follow their progress and get notified if they are meditating as wellMy experience is with the paid native iOS app, but I understand the free version (cloud based/requiring an internet connection) is very similar. The free iPhone version also requires iOS 6 or higher, which I'm not running due to being a moron and not jailbreaking in time. Please share your experience with the free version if you have a chance to play with it. Here's a video showing how the native application works on an iPhone. With the introduction of Groups to the app, I thought this would be helpful for NF members to extend the community into the meditation realm. Thus I've set up an Insight Timer "Nerd Fitness" Group. Feel free to search "Nerd Fitness" from the groups tab of the app and join. Also in my journey to focus my practice I stumbled upon the Insight Meditation Center (ICM). ICM offers audio beginner courses in Insight, or Vipassana meditation, as well as biannual online courses. In addition last I checked there was a pretty active community that I found helpful to participate in while I did the online course. Hope you find this info helpful and I look forward to seeing fellow Nerd Fitness meditators on Insight Timer!
  15. OK I HATE that NONE of the example code on the Android developers site actually works. So... Can someone who really understands Android Service/binding/messaging help an ancient programmer out whose last real programming job was in Fortran with some Pascal who is trying to get a Java Android system up and running in time for a demo by the first of July? I have 2 working programs, an EID reader that uses bluetooth to read an electronic ear tag on a sheep. And a LambTracker program that queries a SQLite database using an ear tag number and pulls up lambing data and health records. I need to get the EID reader to send to the LambTracker an EID tag and have the LambTracker automatically pull up the data as the ear tags are read. I've been tearing my hair out on this because none of the examples work and I'm just getting lost in the differences between services, binding, broadcast etc. etc. etc.
