  1. This discrete and select social club serves to not only promote illumination with regard to the eclectic, obscure and esoteric but also endeavors to promote the development of physical skills required of adventurers. We have skill development workshops that range from true torch making (in case one find themselves in a cave) to LandNav (for Orienteering events) to grappling hook use. Think Teddy Roosevelt meets Edward Gorey meets Indiana Jones meets Sherlock Holmes meet Amelia Earhart. Feel free to respond if interested. J.P. 2. Hey all, I've signed up for the Spartan Sprint at Fenway Park in Boston on 11/13 but none of my friends who said they were going to signed up ended up signing up for the team so I'd like to open this up to other rebels who might be interested. Link to the race: http://www.spartan.com/en/race/detail/1641/overview I've signed up for the morning run on 11/13 and created a team. Here's the team information: Team Name: Scuderia 603 Password: bmrs2016 I'd love to get a group together for this event so I don't have to do it by myself. We can also change the team name if more rebels sign up. Questions? Just post them here or hit me up on Snapchat (golfcart34). Happy Running!
  3. For those that thought I might have been derezzed, I've pulled myself up out of the depths and am training for Boston again! I missed the secondary cutoff last year by twelve seconds, which was a kick in the teeth, but have been putting in the miles and dropping weight, so I feel like I'm on the right path again. Yes! Goal #1 Continue to put the miles in. I'm on week 6 of this plan and so far it hasn't beat me up too badly. The last ten weeks before the Lehigh marathon on 9/11/16 will look like this. This is a new approach for me with splitting my miles up between morning and evening runs. On the other side of the screen, it all looks so easy! Goal #2 Continue to track my food. I might slack a little on the weekends, but during the week, I need to keep tracking. I'm not terribly focused on the quality per se, but I need to make sure I'm eating enough to fuel all the miles, but also continue my downward weight trend, which has been going well. Food before my evening runs is key. It is my power source after all. Goal #3 Continue to lift weights twice a week. I started with the spouse back in November and have really enjoyed it. Once the current marathon program started, I dropped down to the Tactical Barbell fighter program from Stonglifts 5x5. As Jaymul correctly predicted, even that had me burning out, so now I'm following his recommendation, which is twice a week at various percentages of my one rep max. I'm eager to see how lifting will help my race performance, which is why it's part of my Master (Control) Program. LUYL I seriously slacked last year on house projects and the big one right now is completing the build of a new shed/home gym. The spouse is super excited to get it completed and has been using her new muscles to help haul around sheets of flooring. My goal is to get this done ASAP so those new muscles aren't looking to beat me up.
  4. Hey Nerds. I posted about this in the Big Ass Boston Thread, but thought I'd make a new one. I'll be in the area Oct 8-13 and would love to see/meet some nerds. So, uh, let's maybe try to plan something. It's been a really long time since I've been up there so help me with ideas for hangouts. I'll be staying in NH, but driving to the Boston area is not a problem.
  5. Hey dudes. Coming in last minute because I struggled to think up a goal since I'm kind of over the last one. Then I remembered that I publicly declared the following goal at Boston Social Athletes last week (I approved that photo, and it looked way better when it was tiny on the camera display). Complete the 2015 BAA Distance Medley The BAA (Boston Athletic Association) Distance Medley is the 5K, 10K, and half marathon that they do throughout the year, only you get an extra medal and commit to it all at once. The 5K is in April, the 10K is in June, and the half is in October. How I'm getting there: Distance run 2-3 times per week. My company soccer league is starting up, which might mess things up, but I'd still be active, so I'm lowering the requirement. Also dreadmill season sucks.Continue going to Wednesday November Project. The only allowable reason I'll stop doing this is if it gets unsafe to ride my bike there in icy darkness. Or I injure myself/get sick, which applies to any physically active goal.Go to bed before midnight every day. It's tangentially related, but good sleep is important and I couldn't think of a 3rd thing. I'm allowing exceptions for when I spend time with others because I need to get out more. The purpose is more that I don't stay up late for no reason. By go to bed, I mean attempting to sleep, not in bed playing with my phone.Life Quest: Up my flossing game. I suck at flossing so the plan is to floss 3-4 times a week (~every other day). I'm letting this happen gradually, so the first week needs to be at least once, the second twice, and then the next 4 weeks can be 3-4+ times. I'm not doing a 3rd side quest because I feel like I'd be doing it because I have to and not because I want to. Maybe that will change later in the challenge.
  6. Battlescars: Exodus This is it! I move across the country during this challenge. I’m pumped for the new adventure, but also terrified to give up the comfort and security that I’ve established here. It’ll be exciting, ridiculous, and probably frustrating as hell. But honestly, I’m too pumped to care. Los Angeles, I’m coming for ya. Brace yourself. Goals: 1. Post (at minimum) three times a week. (+3 WIS) This is a huge problem for me. I’m so bad at posting and keeping track of what I’m doing. I feel like posting more will give me an extra boost with the rest of my goals as well. This is a great community, and I want to be more active within it. 2. Go to the gym at least three times a week. (+2 CON) I can hear you now, “But battlescars! You go to the gym like, every day!†True, imaginary conversation partner, but things will definitely be different when I move. I’m afraid that I’ll stop seeing exercise as a priority when I get out west, so I’m making sure I stick to the habits I’ve made at home. Exception: August 10th-16th. I will be en route to LA. During this time, three alternative methods of exercise must be found. 3. Run an 8 minute mile. (+3 STA) I’ve bee making great progress with my running. I started out last challenge with about a 13:20 mile, and just yesterday I ran a mile in 10:37. I’d like to continue this progress, and hopefully make it to 8:00 within the next six weeks. 4. Assisted Pull up with 45lb counterbalance. (+3 STR) Started last challenge at 118lbs on the counterbalance, and I’m down to 85lbs. Six weeks to get down to 45lbs? Crazy talk! But let’s give it a shot. 5. Pitch a film for production. (+2 CHA) So I'm going to LA for a film studies program. I know I'm going to get the chance to pitch a film that I want to direct for production. I just need to do it. It's a confidence thing. I'll be okay if it doesn't get chosen. I just want to have enough confidence in myself and my work to put myself out there, and sell myself to others. Let’s rock this challenge, friends! Woo!
  7. In conjunction with the GoRuck Challenge that many Nerd Fitness members will be participating in or spectating on May 23, I'll be hosting a cookout on Sunday, May 25th at my house in Somerville. The cookout is open to any and all NF members, friends, significant others, beers, and pets. We'll probably have two grills going and a wide array of grilled meats, veggies, veg-based salads, grain-based salads, and a stupid number of desserts, I'm sure. I'm hoping for nice weather so that this will mostly be an outdoor event, as we have a yard and a hot tub out there. Details: Who~ NFers and beloved comrades What~ Cookout to celebrate surviving (hopefully) the Ruck, Memorial Day, and Nerd Life When~ 1:30 PM on Sunday, 5/25 Where~ Somerville, MA -- PM me for an address if you are coming Why~ Just because <3 I am currently planning on providing a wide variety of foods to suit any dietary needs, but I'd love for those who decide to come to let me know if they have any particular allergies or serious restrictions. P.S. -- There may or may not already be plans for goodie bags.
  8. Hiya, all. I thought I'd reintroduce myself again. I was here for one challenge in the fall that I ended up doing really good with. Got a late start on the following challenge and didn't follow through. Once that happened I lost my steam and disappeared until now. I have plenty of excuses as to why, but it really doesn't matter. I stopped making my health a priority and as a result I don't feel as good as I did. I'm not coming back in full until it comes time for the next challenge. But I'm will be working on myself until then. And even though I have completed a challenge, I'll be joining the first timers. I think I need that again. So, what is it that finally got me to come back? I have a big life change coming in a year and a half and it is motivating me to make a better me. In June 2015 my brother and I will be moving from Panama City, FL to Boston, MA. We are super excited and while we've realized that we need to make changes financially, we also need to change our health. Boston is a walking city. So I need to get my endurance up. Which will also help with my dog. I won't have a back yard anymore. He'll need many walks. I will be car-less and taking the subway a lot, my recent visit convinced me that I need to work on my balance and my ability to run up and down steps. Boston is full of amazing food. Amazing to taste, not always so good on the body. I need to teach myself discipline when it comes to food. I tend to go over board on good/bad stuff. And then there is the lifestyle stuff I need to work on. I will be moving to a small apartment (most likely), I will have to decrease my possessions. I also need to get better habits in relation to cleaning and organizing. I'm not some giant slob, but I could use some work. I need to work on financial things, too. Boston has a much higher cost of living. I need to save to go and work on making myself hireable (is that a word) in a more competative market. All of this may seem like a lot to do. But luckily, NF has this great idea of breaking it all down into manageable chunks. All hail Steve! tl;dr: My life is going to change in some huge ways. I need to change to be ready. So, I'm back! Here for the community, support, and resources. Hello, again, my fellow nerds!
  9. Fellow rebels! Next month I'll be in NYC for a weekend and then in Boston for a few days after that... this will be my fifth visit to NYC and I've lived for a couple of months in Boston, so I can skip stuff like the Empire State and the Old North Church, but I still want to be a tourist I like museums, the weirder the better, and most outdoorsy things (weather dependent). (I'm already lining up my NYC tradition - trapeze lesson at TSNY) So I'd love to know - where do you bring your friends in NYC and Boston? What's your favourite thing to do there? All suggestions welcome!
  10. Is anyone signed up for the BAA Halfie in October? In a couple weeks I'd love some buds for the long runs :-) I'm actually near Jamaica Pond and parts of the actual route, so it'd be cool to meet up and train!
