  1. The forum keeps timing out - this is my third try to post this.. http://www.pbs.org/video/2365635287/
  2. Good day and welcome! I'm Andrea, science nerd at heart (astrophysics, as you probably read) and I'm on a journey to getting into real good shape! The cliché says theoretical scientists are not at all sporty or active and I'm here to disprove that! Using the scientific method! And bringing out a paper on it! Kidding. I'm just gonna work out and kick some ass. My ultimate goal is to be in damn good shape by the time I graduate (June 2015). I'm currently 138 lbs, 5"2. It's on the edge of ''official overweight'', when relying on BMI, but we all know that's a bit biased, as I work out 4-5 times a week (sometimes more, depending on whether I feel like it) and I'm on a paleo-inspired diet. I still eat dairy for example, but only from goats and sheep as I can't tolerate cow milk D: (I love mozzarella though, damn shame). I have a few minor conditions that make my progress slower, but I'm not going to let those keep me from reaching my goal. To sum them up: hypoglycemia, hypotension, hypothyroidism. You see, everything is 'hypo', except for my weight I slowly try to lose weight, but even a 1200 kcal diet (+ low-carb, high protein) and 4 days of exercise doesn't make me lose any weight, so I might see a doctor for my thyroid again, as this deeply frustrates me. I just want to lose betwee, 7-12 lbs (of fat, I'd love some nice, big round glutes), is that really too much to ask? Anyway, here I'll post what I ate/did daily and how I felt! If you have tips and tricks or know how to handle hypothyroidism, don't hesitate to post it here!! Astronomical kisses PS: Don't forget to kick ass today!
  3. I know you have to eat a surplus of quality calories to build muscle, but can those calories be drawn from the fat around my middle? Can I be eating to lose weight, while still doing push ups and training for a 5K? Also, I was doing Atkins for fat loss, but I'm thinking of switching to Paleo because if I mis-eat one day on Atkins I have to start over, but not so for Paleo. (Is this correct?) Also because I can eat fruit in Paleo. ;-) My question in two part: 1) can I eat dairy in Paleo and still lose weight? Will it slow weight loss? and 2) why is dairy not Paleo?
  4. Hi all, My family recently decided to go on the Atkins diet, and I was wondering how this compares to Paleo. I've always loved fruit and potatoes and having to leave that out is hitting me the hardest, so does anybody know of any comparisons done or anything? Does one have a significant advantage over the other? Could I mix them (I love dairy too)? Which one gives me the fastest and best results? If you can, please include a source for your information (personal experience included). Thank you so much!!
  5. I can't stand milk by itself. But i love chocolate milk! One thing i noticed is that the chocolate milk in the dairy aisle is partly skimmed. Should i instead use whole milk (homogenized) milk+Nesquick chocolate powder or should i just stick to partly skimmed chocolate milk?
  6. Hey guys, So I'm thinking about incorporating the paleo diet into my lifestyle, but I really don't want to become gluten or lactose intolerant so I can still enjoy some of my favorite foods when I cheat. Has anyone had any luck with a semi paleo diet? Any tips?
  7. So, I've tried a new "diet" regimen to jumpstart my progress. I've stalled in my motivation, and needed a kick in the tush. Mon/Tues, Thurs/Fri = Strict-ish paleo. No dairy, no grains. Sugars from fruit/veg only. I will eat peanuts, though. (Not peanut butter, unsalted peanuts in a nut mix for example). Sat/Sun and Wed = Free, healthy eating. A little pasta is okay, as are things like cheese and milk in my coffee Here's my reasoning: I don't believe in setting myself up for failure. Committing to 24/7 paleo is currently not realistic for the state of my willpower. I literally lasted SIX HOURS last time. 6. Hours. My parents are big cookers, and the weekend is when we do big family meals. They've been great at choosing healthier options, but no rice/pasta/etc would be too much to ask. Also, on Wednesdays my company orders in lunch for everyone. Free food. And it's always amazing. I can make healthier options, and there's no way I would be able to resist. I would smell that curry and totally fold. The result, week 1 - I dropped two pounds. Keep in mind, I did not work out at all this week (my play is in tech week and I literally have no extra time). So, I am dancing a little in rehearsals, but not much. And I dropped 2 pounds! That's awesome. What are your thoughts? Does anyone here do intermittent paleo?
  8. Just found this: http://www.organicvalley.coop/newsroom/press-releases/details/article/organic-valley-presents-lactose-free-whole-milk-and-lactose-free-half-half/ Ive been on paleo for several months and the only dairy I eat is greek yogurt. I have a slight lactose intolerance that I can really tell after drinking full lactose milk. I am having a little trouble getting enough calories so If I were to go primal to include milk, would this be an ok substitute for regular organic whole milk?
  9. I got up and did my 20 bodyweight squats, and 10 pushups (still working on them), got some walking in, and going to a kids birthday party at a bounce house later, so getting a workout then! I have been cutting out dairy and grains over the last week. Yesterday I was completly dairy free, today I only had a greek yougurt (they are my favorite and the hardest to give up) for dairy, and have had no grains at all. Now I have a HUGE migraine. Wondering if it's related. Either way gonna keep at it and see how it goes. Working on getting down to having limited (very small) portions of dairy and grain only 2 days a week by they end of the 6 week challenge. Did I mention there will be pizza, cake and ice cream at this party? Going to be a true test tonight for sure, will post back later about how I did.
