    Gum

Hey guys! Influenced to try intermittent fasting by Steve's recent blog, I gave it a go and WOW, I had no idea I was so adhered to breakfast. I did it for two days in a row, and I believe its a matter of time to get used to wake up at 5am and not eat until 12pm (doing almost 18hrs of fasting as I take discomfort in sleeping with a full stomach). During the 2nd day, a co-worker offered me a gum. Me, starving, took it without thinking. I was surprised that my appetite drastically reduced. It's almost like I'm not actually hungry, I just want to chew and taste something in my mouth. To suppress hunger, I've been drinking a lot of water, and while it helps, the hunger still persists heavily. My question is, is it ok to chew gum (any gum) while fasting? Does chewing gum has any impact?
  2. I'm going on this one month no spending kick. Part of that is not eating out at restaurants anymore. I was eating out about four to five times a week and it was killing my wallet; so I stopped for a month in order to get my finances under control. BUT when I complete that month I want to celebrate with my boyfriend by trying someplace new. I live over in the East Michigan Area. Does anyone know of any good restuarants in that area or perhaps any good chains?? Anywhere with variety, but not crazay expensive.
  3. This question has been seriously bugging me like the plague and I was wondering if you's guys could tell me the health significance of rusks. Are they good? Can I eat them instead of bread? If I can't what should I eat instead because an egg for breakfast for me is a must! (Withoutbreadiamlostsee?)
  4. Hello, my name is Rebecca and I'm 22. I like being fat. I've been dreaming about taking up parkour for years and I finally made it my New Years resolution so here's to learning another skill! I've been starting out with basic strength training and running. I'm currently obsessed with parkour so anyone who loves it, does it, or just knows about it - come talk to me!
  5. I just discovered this magical place called Nerd Fitness about 2 weeks ago and love all the information I've received so far, however I am very new to Paleo and have some questions... I'm about 2 weeks into cleaning up my diet, gradually going Paleo (still eat sweet potato, dairy, oatmeal and sweetened tea/coffee). I used to eat TONS of carbs; at every meal and most snacks. The carb/sugar withdrawal has been difficult, because I've been feeling more hungry than ever before. I never had a sweet tooth before, and now just seeing a picture of a piece of cake makes my mouth water. Being hungry all the time makes me want to eat more, and I find that my portion sizes at dinner are bigger (although all protein and vegetables and some starch). My weight has always been okay (5'5", 120lbs, but only working out 2-3x/week), however I'm terribly worried that all the increased portions of veggies and protein (~50-70g/day) are going to make me gain. I mean, I've steered clear of real bacon, ground beef and egg yolks for the past decade, and I feel so guilty eating it!!!! Has anyone else had issues with gaining weight unintentionally? Especially because they are eating larger portions compared to pre-paleo? Or do I need to be strict with portion control and eat cashews or something after dinner? Also, on a different note, I need breakfast vegetable ideas (besides sweet potato). I can't have just bacon and eggs every day. Or would a fiber supplement be adequate/beneficial?
  6. Hey guys, So this is my very first post here. I've been looking at this website on and off for quite a while, as I've gone down various weightloss ventures in the past. I've yoyo-d a lot with my weight, doing all different things from calorie counting, to GF SF DF, the failsafe diet, and have gained it all back due to emotional stressors/binge eating problems, and probably the biggest one - medications I'm finally on the right track with the binge eating, I feel like I have it under control and haven't binged in a while. I've come around to embracing the paleo way of life, and it's my second day eating 100% paleo, but I've been incorporating these changes slowly for a while. A large part of my weight gain has been the insatiable hunger I experience on two different drugs I'm on for various reasons - prednisone and seroquel. I am weaning completely off the prednisone but have been on as high as 25mg/day, and have halved my seroquel dose from 200mg to 100mg/day. All the reading I've done about paleo seems to suggest that it isn't necessary to count calories, but with the increased hunger from these drugs, I'm just not sure how much to trust my body. I've put on 16 kilos in the last six months due to the drugs and binge eating. I'm a chronic calorie-counter, and use myfitnesspal to check all of my macros and total calories. I'm 200lbs, (my heaviest ever), 20 years old, and 171cm tall. I'm currently netting around 1600 calories a day tracked through myfitnesspal, but finding myself very hungry even with an increased intake of fat and protein (my ratios are about 40% fat, 40% protein, 20% or less carbs). I'm also very tired, and wondering if anyone else has experienced this when taking the plunge to full paleo. Finally, although I am undertaking this diet and lifestyle change to become healthier, and look after my body and myself better, weightloss is still a large concern for me. Even when I was a healthier weight, I've always been at the heavy end of the scales for my size and my goal weight is around 140lbs. I'm looking for advice on the calorie intake I'm currently at and whether this will be enough to see a shift in my weight, if I'm eating too much or too little, and if the calories are even that important. Currently for exercise I am just walking, at least 30 mins a day. I used to run a lot and have got the rebel running guide which is excellent, and something I want to start, but for now I'm just concentrating on cleaning up my diet and losing a bit of weight, and getting out each day for a walk. I have been diagnosed with OCPD so doing things slowly and one at a time and giving myself lenience and flexibility is incredibly difficult (it also makes not weighing myself three times a day difficult and contributes to the obsessive calorie counting), but something I am aiming to do, to make this a permanent shift and not one of the many weightloss fads I've done. Thanks in advance guys, Verit
  7. Ok lately Ive been getting a strong urge to midnight snack. I admit before I decided to change i was a heavy snack eater, I ate like a pig but lately these urges are coming back . I would suddenly woke up in the middle of the night (2-3am) feeling hungry. I tried ignoring it, but im the kind of guy who just cant sleep on an empty stomach. Whenever this happens I would just drink warm milk but still it is losing it's touch. Im starting to eat heavy like sandwiches and such and its getting outta hand. Help?
