  1. I have a younger brother who is tall and strong, but overweight and rather sedentary. He is 19 years old, 6’3", and over 240 lbs. He was always a chubby kid with a tendency to overload with junk food, but I guess my parents never decided to take his bad habits seriously enough, despite my father’s efforts to encourage him to lose weight (which, to this day, consist mostly of him yelling at my brother about how tight his clothes have gotten and why the hell he won’t do anything about it). A doctor’s visit from several years ago revealed that he was pre-diabetic, and I’m assuming he still is. He doesn’t really care about things like simple vs. complex carbs, portion control, or high- vs low-glycemic index foods. And with all this news about young people dying from COVID-19 due to preexisting conditions like obesity and diabetes, I’m really starting to get worried. I (24F) have always cared a lot about my own physical health — I’m actually studying to become a doctor. I try to limit my intake of processed foods, I rarely eat out these days, and I exercise regularly. My BMI has always been in the healthy zone, and over the years I’ve discovered ways to make exercise more fun for myself. I’m actually a huge nerd who loves video games and pretty much all things medieval fantasy, but hobbies like martial arts and LARP have helped me to stay fit over the years. My brother has also always been a bit of a geek. Like...we both like to play Smash Bros and Dragon Ball Z games together, for instance, but I’ve found more satisfaction from learning to fight like those characters in real life than to just be good at button mashing combinations. Unfortunately, my brother does not share those interests. TL;DR I don’t know how to encourage my brother to improve his diet and start a regular exercise routine. I don’t think he’s as willing to suspend his disbelief as I am and use his fictional role models to motivate him to get in better shape. I remember not too long ago that he mentioned he was interested in taking boxing classes, as he is physically very strong and boxing would seem cathartic for him. However, that wouldn’t be possible right now, due to the closure of all non-essential businesses. What would you suggest I do?

Will update with my info and current plan. Want to post yesterday's food log and start there.
  3. Hey guys, I'm a 32-year-old male and was wondering is it fine to take testosterone specifically for when I work out?. Hope to hear from someone soon Thanks in advance
  4. Where to begin. I'm obviously new here. I am very excited to find this site, however. I've always been comfortable pursuing and enjoying whatever interests me (I guess that's called being a "nerd" now) and I've been mindful of health and fitness my whole life as well. This site seems like a really great mix place for support, community, encouragement, and education. Let's get the stat-dump out of the way. Species: Human Age: 29 Sex: Male Height: 5'11 Weight: 165 lbs. Recent Picture: Here's me, looking tired, after helping a friend move As this community is the fusion of Nerdiness and Fitness, I'll introduce the two sides of me: Nerd: I've always loved Fantasy and SciFi. I've been a Dungeons and Dragons player since I was in high school (Thorin, level 1 Fighter) and I started playing PC games on our old 386 when I was about 6. I have played many (admittedly, too many) video games since then. Lots of Diablo II and Vanilla World of Warcraft as a teen. Favorites have been . . . opens Steam account Fallout 3, BF2142, Left4Dead, and DayZ, among many others. #1 spot goes to LoZ: Ocarina of Time. I love the Zelda series and OOT will always hold a very special place in my heart. Other "nerdy" interests, aside from the tabletop gaming that I don't think I'll ever give up, have been PC tinkering and recently quadcopters. Fitness: I am fortunate that I have grown up in a family that was generally healthy. As a result, for most of my life I have been rather conscious of health and fitness. I feel like I was also lucky to get pretty good "base stats." Good immune system, no significant medical problems, and a metabolism I can barely keep fed. I wrestled in High School for 3 years, and in my adult life I have lifted weights on-and-off with wildly varying regularity, focus, and intensity. I've been eating between 75% and 95% Paleo for longer than I know exactly. Over a year. I really believe in the principles of the lifestyle and it was already pretty close to what I was eating. I don't drink soda at all. Sugar truly is white death. Exercise aside, I feel fantastic on Paleo, my parents tried it for about 6 months and lost quite a bit of weight (not a goal for me) and had much more energy. My dad, for example, went from about 215 to 185. I am trying to convince myself to like running. I sit a desk all day (IT work) and I know I'm not doing my heart any favors just letting it sit around, so occasionally I'll put on shorts and run 3-4 miles. So, why am I here? -Lots of reasons. So far, this community seems really cool. I struggle with motivation sometimes (bed feels so good) and I think by connecting with other people, I'll challenge myself to stick with the plans I make for myself. So "making friends" is on the list. aww -Achievements! I know we "work out to improve ourselves" and all that, but the idea of getting EXP and leveling up for being healthy is just too cool to pass up. -Track my progress. Scribbling weights down on a paper in my gym shorts isn't nearly as cool as recording my progress on a forum. -Motivation. Lately, I'd started a new lifting schedule and was really enjoying it. Going pretty regularly, putting on some weight and really starting to feel a strength difference over a few months. I was cooking well, eating well, even running a fair bit (ok, like once a week maybe). Then I got dumped. It really took the wind out of my sails. My gym bag just sits there. My running shoes do the same. My "95%" Paleo diet has turned into "Paleo + Beer, donuts, and pizza." Beer for dinner, drinking coffee again, back to a terrible sleep schedule - the works. The whole ordeal really took the wind out of my sails, and while breaking up is always hard mentally, I know its been bad for me physically as well. Geez, I feel like I should have been laying on a couch for that sob story. Nothing like getting it all out, huh? So anyway, that's me. I'm going to poke around the forums and read about the guilds, check out some profiles, and hopefully start up my own little progress thread. If you made it this far, thanks for reading all this! Feel free to say hi! - Dash
  5. I am a complete beginner to all kinds of weight training, and recently got my first gym membership. I have been doing a plan that I found online, which is below. I am gravitating toward the machines because I am scared of using free weights and hurting myself. My legs are relatively average for a beginner, but my arms are tiny, to the point where I can barely do 1 pushup. I want help designing a workout to stay healthy and build a little muscle. I don't need advice for cardio as I have been jogging for some time. Thanks! 2x8 Machine Military Press 3x8 Machine Chest Press 3x8 Lat Pulldown 2x8 Tricep Pulldown - Rope Attachment 2x8 Bicep Curls 2x8 Standing Calf Raise 3x8 Leg Presses 3x8 Leg Curls 2x8 Crunch Machine
  6. Hi Crossfiters I'm looking for some information on what would generally be regarded as the minimum capabilities for males mid 30s, not sure if such a thing exists but it would be good to find out either way. Cheers in advance
  7. Hi everyone. I'm new to the forums. This looks like a nice place to start my fitness career. First of all, I want an opinion, I have looked into fitness programs such as P90X and Kyle Leon's Somanabolic Muscle Maximizer... Have these worked for anyone here? Are these worth trying? I'm usually super skeptical about these things, but I'm getting desperate. I need a simple guide to get myself into shape, I have a gym membership, I just never go... I've learned so far about eating healthy, I need a good nutrition plan (this is said to be the most important thing and I think that's true). I think I can handle this part. I don't know what to do at the gym... What do I work out? How long do I work out? When do I work out? What areas are best to train? I'm really trying to lower my belly and love-handles, that's my biggest issue. Could anyone help me build a workout plan, point me the in the right direction or give advice? I'm 18-years-old (I meet the website regulations!), about 171cm tall and 180 pounds if that helps. I would like to start fresh. Thanks.
  8. About me: My name is Stephen. I am a 28 year old male - father of 2 - Married - Working on my Bachelors in Network Administration I live in Pennsylvania I am about 220lbs at 6'1 (This Pic is a few months back when I was training - I put on maybe 8-10lbs since then : / ) I recently stopped working out and I of course regret it I made huge strides - 250lbs to 212lbs - almost doubling my lifting abilities in every area The issue is, I lost my motivation. I was working towards becoming a police officer but due to me being a juvenile diabetic, I realized it would be a liability. I love computers and I know I can be successful in this field, diabetic or not. The issue is, working with computers requires no fitness specifics. I want to do this for me. I am a nerd at heart and I stumbled across this forum and saw it as a sign : ) I am going to Florida in 4 months and I want my goal to be a reality: Main Quest – Build enough muscle and lose enough fat that I am comfortable without a shirt on in public 3 Goals each week Work out at least 3 times a week including 1 dropset Get 8 hours of sleep Cut out junk food – Focus on Protein based meals I hope I can join a team where people who have similar goals want to encourage each other Please message me and I will provide a cell number or email address or w/e so we can become accountability partners or even better accountability teammates : ) Thank you God Bless
