  1. Here is what I have picked for my first challenge... Diet Swap out one soda per day with water Eat a vegetable with one meal every day Fitness Walk every day Level Up Your Life Have a 5 minute dance party each day Go to bed 10 minutes earlier each week
  2. I love the game Witcher 3 and am just starting to get into Andrzej Sapkowski's books, so I thought that I'd use Geralt of Rivia as my character, even though I'm a lady. I could have gone with Ciri, I guess, but if I were going to cosplay anyone from the game it would be a lady version of Geralt. I've built a mini backstory for my character on my profile page. Check it out, if you feel like it! I just heard about Nerd Fitness from my husband. This is just the thing that I need! I had a wake up call this past week while I was helping my mom move into her new property in Oregon. I helped take down barbed wire fencing surrounding the property, hauled wood and heavy fence posts, and did some demolition work on the garage. The "wake up" part of all of this was that I thought that I was a lot stronger than I proved to be. I saw a bunch of photographs of myself working and saw that I was fluffier than I've ever been in my life. I stepped on two different scales and confirmed that indeed, I am the heaviest that I've ever been in my life. I am 5'6" and 214.2 pounds. EEEEEEEEP. My First Challenge: Strength Complete the "Ultimate 30 Day Squat Challenge" from Fitness Magazine. (I'll have to start that one a couple of days early - see the image for the challenge calendar.) Endurance Work up to completing four fifteen minute kettlebell circuits in week four of the challenge, using 15 pound bells. Powers Stick to healthy meal plans every day for a month with one "oops" day allowance per week. Submit one short story to a literary magazine and track it.
  3. Hello! I am new to NF! Any who, what is this four week challenge? How does one sign up or do it? And how do you choose which class you are and such? Thank you!
  4. Well hello there ! 5 weeks into the Rebellion and it finally hits me that there is more community to this than the Facebook groups! Today over at the Academy site, I read the article about self-limiting believes and realized how much of my obstacles are inside of my head, tied to the fact that I am not just impressed with myself and my ability to change. Sad as it is, I also happen to know that it's simply NOT true. I managed several big life changes just fine (like finishing grad school or converting my daily commute to a bicycle) but somehow I am just not the type of person who gets up at 6 AM to work out !??! I am calling my own BS and setting on the following quests. As a planner, I also am going to lay out the actions to get to the goal ( not sure if I will use all of the "How" points under each quest, but it makes it easier for me to see specific actions that will lead me to victory.) 1) Nutrition - I will track and drink my prescribed water amount daily, dammit. How will I do that? - I will start and end the day with a glass of water - A one-for-one rule will be in place for each caffeinated beverage ( e. g. cup of water for each cup of coffee or tea) - My water bottle is not allowed to leave my side - violators will be punished by being found and drunk out of. - I'll add a water tracker to my journal 2) Nutrition - wine will be limited to the social occasions on the weekends How will I do that? - No purchasing or drinking of wine by myself at home, either on the weekends or during the week - For mid-week social occasions, I will fess up to my friends/co-workers about this quest - A one-for-one rule will apply for wine/water consumption just like with caffeine - I will schedule in the allowed wine-drinking occasions in the calendar today + add one more non-anticipated wine day 3) Fitness - I will do two of the NFA workouts per week in the mornings. ( BONUS - 3 workouts per week! I really want the latter to be my Quest but this is me setting up for success right :-) ?) How will I do that? - I will identify the days of my work-outs and put them down in my calendar + set up email reminders - The night before the workout, I will clear out the spot in the house where I exercise - I will go to to bed no later than 10:30 PM the night before - On the morning of the workout, I JUST DO IT, no excuses - ( But if the morning workout didn't happen - evening workout is better than no workout at all) 4) EXTRA SPECIAL LIFE QUEST - I will make an awesome light-up at night custom horned head-piece for Burning Man. How will I do that? - get all the supplies from Amazon and the costume store (done!) - dedicate 2 evenings a week and mark them on the calendar as my "crafts" nights - I promise to post the picture of it right here at the end of 4 weeks - please demand it if I go quiet on this one LOOT - That sweet-sweet Thai Massage and steam room combo at my local spa.
  5. I just recently joined Nerd Fitness, and I started off really well! But then, I fell right back in to my laziness. I am great at taking the first step, but I have a very difficult time sticking to new habits. They say that you should set realistic goals, so with that in mind, here are my four goals for this challenge: Diet -I will drink 64 ounces of water every day. -I will not consume added sugar Fitness -I will be able to do the Beginner's Bodyweight Workout for three circuits by August 13th. Level-Up My Life -I will implement a daily chore routine to make life at home more enjoyable. May the force be with me.
  6. In my quest to go from honey bun to honey badger, my first quest is to establish a couple of good habits that I can then build on. The first big one is diet. I've been logging all of my food for about two weeks now, and it is so helpful. Even without really trying to alter what I eat, just becoming mindful and paying attention to what I am putting in my body has helped me regulate and make better decisions. So big goal number one is to keep logging for the whole month. I'm hesitant to set specific calorie or macro goals too soon so for now just logging is enough. I'm going through some life transitions right now including a big move across the country and getting a new life started up. It's important to me both to be healthy through the actual transition (eating well and working out can be tough on a 3000 mile road trip), and also to get off on the right foot. I've quit my job and I'm going back to grad school for a while, so I have the opportunity to find balance and work on improving my overall health and wellness. When I moved to my present location 2 years ago, I didn't do that and I never was able to get any momentum to make positive changes. Goals: Nutrition: Log all food & drink on MFP All the water Fitness 3 workouts per week: C25K + bodyweight. For some reason I've never gotten the hang of integrating cardio and strength workouts. By going light-ish on both I hope to be more successful. Level Up Your Life (Pick One) Walk the puppy every day at least 20 minutes, because his life needs leveling up too!
  7. Whoops! Totally first placed this in the wrong forum at first. Can you say n00b? XD Hey there! My name is Becca, and this is my first challenge! I'm really looking forward to being a part of this community. As I list my goals, I'm going to place an asterisk next to my non-negotiable goals. I have started several times to begin developing healthier habits, but I think where I fall short is the "All or Nothing" mentality. I'm trying to show myself more grace this time around. I'm going to strive to do more than just the basics, but I understand for me to make lasting changes, baby steps are the way. So I'll have a plan, but if things get tough / busy / stressful, I will fall back on the basics, indicated by asterisks. Diet: Eat veggies with 2 meals a day* Track all meals on MyFitnessPal* Go three days in a row each week without sweets (ice cream, chocolate, dessert, etc..) Stay below daily calorie goal Try one new NF / paleo recipe each week. Fitness (will adjust as necessary): Mon - Wed - Friday: NF Level 3 Gym workouts Wednesdays and Saturdays: Cardio workout (run, spin class) Tuesdays and Thursdays: NF Yoga session 2 NF workouts / week* Life: Read two books* Write in journal once/week Write two blogs Plan intentional one-on-one time with husband once a week Will be updating probably around weekly!
  8. *Copied from my Battle Chapters aka Daily Log* I have been apart of the Nerd Fitness rebellion now for about a month! Woot! As such I wanted to show my June progress: I want to do the splits all ways, but have been focusing on front ways. In the beginning of the month I didn't measure but now I am less than 6 inches from the ground!! Woot!!! I want to get down to 18% body fat. Therefore I bought a measurer and measured myself at 22.1% body fat last month and today I am 20.3%! Woot!! I want to eat healthier. The month of June, I have been cooking just about everyday (or having leftovers) from paleo or paleo-ish recipes that I find online. I hardly eat out and keep cookies/desserts to a minimum when I can. I have been reading labels and eating the appropriate servings. Counting calories and trying to keep my protein high. Usually averaging ~50 grams a day. But I want to boost that to ~75 grams.
  9. Hi and whats up everyone? I registered far earlier on this forum but kind of busy with life and totally forgot about this awesome community. I couldn't think of a cool nickname either than using my own name with a number at the end of it. I know I'm boring.Bleehhk. Anyway, Yup, me name is Zaid from Singapore. I'm like living half way around the world and I believe it is the only Island that is recognized as a developed country. In fact it is the only island city-state. With only two seasons, Rain or Shine, those living here can't possibly have any excuses not to keep fit all year round isn't it? But I guess not. Lifestyle here is like so fast paced and you are expected to work long hours just to make ends meet. I'm currently a chemical process technician working for a German company called Evonik, the one who is sponsoring BVB Dortmund. Been working in shift for almost three years now and I would agree that shift work is hard on the body in addition to the physical labor job we need to do. We value our off days so much as we need them to recover from the workload and inconsistent sleeping time. To think about improving our fitness level would need a lot of motivation, hard work and proper strategy to prevent burning out. Luckily I'm single without many commitments to begin with. If my off days falls on a weekday, I would spend most of the time, working out, reading, studying and probably lazing off with my cat. If my off days falls on weekends, then that is when my schedule will start to get packed. When it comes to fitness, I used to be skinny and underweight, but now I'm having problems with tummy fats with small arms and legs. Probably due to irregular sleeping time affecting my weight now. It's very confusing for me. It's like I want to grow stronger and bigger but my tummy is the only thing that grows faster and easily. Annooyyyiing:/..haha I have just joined membership with Anytime Fitness, hopefully I can start with a beginner workout regime and see results..CANT WAIT.. Anyway if anyone is on shift too and hitting the gym, do beep me Id love to hear your advice. Also,if anyone coming to Singapore for vacation you can beep me for some tips going around here!:D Here are some awesome place to go!
  10. Hello fellow Rebels! This is my first challenge, and my first real look into NF. I've been a member for about a month or so, have done a few zombie runs and a few yoga classes, but haven't been tracking anything or setting any real goals. A bit about me - I'm a stay at home mum, with two young children (3 and 1) who keep me busy most of the time. I generally watch what we eat, as I'm well aware of the effects of dairy/wheat on my body, but I need to up my game when it comes to eating veggies and losing the carbs and sugar (I looooove da cake). So onto my goals... Am just picking some from the suggestions as I don't really know how to set them otherwise. How do you choose your goals? LEVEL 1 REBEL CHALLENGE: Diet Eat a vegetable with one meal every day Take one processed snack you have each day and replace it with a healthy protein, fruit, or vegetable Fitness Complete the NF bodyweight workout at least 1x a week Run twice a week Yoga three times a week Level Up Your Life Say one positive thing to yourself each morning when you look in the mirror Thanks for reading! Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated
  11. I loved the challenge set up by Annyshay so I'm going to piggy back off of that and include some of my heroes! Team RWBY. If you haven't seen this show. It's amazing. Please check it out. The art style if very different but the story, characters, and weapons are creative and amazing. It's on Netflix, Crunchyroll, or Rooster Teeth. Ruby Rose - Fun Continue to enjoy gaming... when everything else is done Weiss Schnee - Agility Stretch and practice the splits (front ways, each leg) Blake Belladona - Escape Read for at least 30 minutes a day, everyday Yang Xiao Long - Strength Continue the Beginner's Bodyweight Circuit until I can complete it Well that's it! This is my first challenge but I look forward to training with you all! :o) -Lilmissbri (Assassin in training)
  12. Hey my name is Matt i'm a mechanic by trade & love the outdoors. Turning 16 was the end of my fitness, because I stopped riding a bike and I bought my first jeep. I joined NF with my wifey to get back into shape and get stronger while building up my endurance. This site is a great way to inspire each other to do more with our goals as well as be each others "accountability buddies." It's to late to post much just wanted to introduce myself . I'm off to bed before I pass out on the couch; hope to talk to some people that can give me a few pointers as well as being able to stay on track using the battle logs. Night everyone.
  13. Hi! I'm new to the site and the whole regular workouts thing (right now my exercise is fairly sporadic). I'm 16, female, 43 kg (94 pounds - I'm short and Asian), strength wise moderately strong. Though I'm blessed to be genetically thin I'm definitely skinnyfat - there's fat in areas like my stomach, thighs and calves that I would rather be muscle, and overall I want to become stronger and have better stamina (my endurance is basically zero hah). Diet-wise I eat healthyish, am trying to cut down on sugar and eat more protein. I've been trying to build a comprehensive weekly routine involving strength training, Pilates for flexibility and core strength, and cardio (goodness knows I need it - my timing for 1.5 miles was 18 minutes!), however every plan I've made leads to me overtraining and I give up. What's a good schedule to follow weekly? I'm currently starting Couch to 5K, 3 times a week - should I do strength training on those days too? 3-4x/week full body strength training sounds like a reasonable amount to me. I'm also trying to get in an hour of Pilates 2x/wk. I did read somewhere that you should aim for 30 min of cardio activity each day - is this true? i.e. How do I work all these into a weekly plan that doesn't take more than 1h/day? And that has rest days heh P.s. I also don't have access to a gym or weight equipment so anything I do has to be outdoors or in a 4metre x 2 metre living room space with bodyweight. Any ideas for a quiet at-home cardio workout? thanks in advance for any advice
  14. Hello folks, Let me introduce myself. My name is Daniel, I'm 19 years old and I'm from Mexico. I'm glad to be here because I'd really like to add some kind of excercise to my daily life. I spend most of my time in a chair and I have some diseases because of that. So, it's time to move my ass and and I need your help and advices for that. Therefore, my principal question is simple, Which kind of work out should I do? Bearing in mind that I've never done excercise and I don't want to obtain a sculptural body or an extraordinary super-strenght, I only want to be healthy and feel good about myself, and for that reason I think that I won't need to pay and spend 30 hours in a gym. I've been watching some rutines/excercises/fitness videos on YouTube but I don't know how to start. I hope that you can help me with your experience and your point of view. An apology If my text have grammar mistakes, as I said, English isn't my native language. Regards!
  15. Hi everBODY. I'm Jade Pint and I'm not all that new to NerdFitness but I am still learning my way around the academy. I've just been kind of lurking in the background for a while. I'm a 31 year old mom of 3, who is a giant child and likes to watch cartoons (MLP FTW). I used to lift regularly but I quit back in late Feb to mid March?? when I injured my shoulder, tearing my bicep tendon and spraining my rotator cuff. I'm angry with myself for letting things get as bad as they have. Since my PT told me no lifting at all, I used that as an excuse to eat...and eat...I had only gained about 10 pounds but my muscle quality has clearly gone down considerably and my size has increased quite a bit. I'm ready to start moving my aft again. So, NF to the rescue. I have big dreams that I would love to accomplish someday (preferably sooner than later) but for now, I'll just take baby steps and work on my food intake and inactivity. I am an eater. I eat when I'm stressed and I eat when I'm bored. I am not eating absentmindedly either. I know full well what I'm doing. I weigh the consequences, realize that it's a huge step back from what I want, then I eat it anyways cuz food. I want to get back to tracking my macros and meal prepping to keep me from just stuffing whatever into my face. Anywho, this isn't an All About Me or anything but it's my starter goals for getting back to my fit life!
  16. I started losing weight before I'd ever even heard of Nerd Fitness, but it wasn't on purpose, and it wasn't healthily. I lost about 15 pounds by just... not... eating. And throwing up any time I tried to. No, I didn't have an eating disorder, although there's nothing shameful about that. What I had was Trauma. And Major Depression, but I'm pretty sure it was the t r a u m a that was putting me off my food. Also didn't sleep for like a month, did I mention that? The bright side is I looked great afterwards. Hopefully, I can be actually healthy next. A five-month struggle and some new scars later, and I'm finally in the later stages of recovery. Which is nice. The early stages involved dropping out of college and moving to a completely new state, which, in hindsight, was 300% the right decision and I regret nothing. Except maybe not doing that sooner. But it does leave me with the question of, well, okay, ehat should I do next, now that I've got myself something close to a blank slate? Now that my daily goal isn't just "keep breathing", what now? Now I have to, like, make decisions about my future and stuff. That's when I heard about Nerd Fitness, and Level Up Your Life. And by heard I mean I remembered an article I'd seen on lifehack.org like a year ago and was like "huh". I'd already been using Habitica, and other gamified types of organizational thingies, so I knew the basic drill. I used some Audible credits to buy the book. Listening to it, and browsing the website, I realized that while Nerd Fitness was kinda like the programs I'd been using, it wasn't just another extra fun to-do list. It was, like... Well, it was like a step-by-step built your own adventure workshop. And something about doing exciting things in a very organized manner appeals to my Ravendore soul. My vague goals are to be as mentally and physically healthy as possible, and avoid another depressive episode. Forever. My less vague goals are to finally go to Korea and visit my best friend from high school, get to a competitive level in Tai Chi, meditate every single day for however many years. At least one. Finally be able to do a decent pushup, and lose another 15 pounds. Healthily, this time. I'm posting on here because I'd love to be a part of the community, but don't have a facebook and refuse to get a facebook. So, hi. I'm new here.
  17. (I don't play very often, but I hope you read the title in the StarCraft SCV voice if you recognized it.) Hi there! After a few days deliberation (probably motivated by the price jump of NF Academy), and a few years of regularly reading the NF newsletter, I figured I may as well get off my butt and attempt to take the advice I've been reading about for so long. Here is a spiel about who I am and why I'm here: I'm 21, just graduated college, working at the moment, moving for graduate school (PhD program... hardcore nerd here ) come August, and you'd probably think just from my age I'd be in fantastic shape. But nah, far from it. I've always felt like my heart is an untrained weakling and my lungs are too small for my body, and no physical activity yet has seemed to change that. I did gymnastics as a kid, dance classes and whatnots on occasion as a preteen, but then high school hit and all non-nerd extracurriculars kind of just stopped. (I went to math club and science club. Because priorities. :D) I suppose that's mainly due to my inability to get anywhere to do those extracurriculars (working parents), but probably also because I was in the typical overachiever high school kid preppin' fo' college mode of all-books-no-play (and I liked it that way). This continued through college, where I continued to overwork myself beyond belief(no surprise for attending an Ivy...) , and will probably continue to do so for as long as I am in academia. But I've realized more and more lately that I've definitely gained weight throughout undergrad, and am definitely DEFINITELY addicted to sugar, and my body is not where I'd like it to be... especially compared to those around me. Whether or not my weight gain is my fault or medication-induced (or both), and whether or not my lungs are actually abnormally tiny... I would like to do something about moving in a positive direction. I also don't really like conventional forms of exercise, but I'm curious about trying strength training, and especially interested in figuring out the most efficient way to get where I want to be physically. Or move towards it, at least. I specified conventional forms of exercise because I think the best outdoorsy hobby I've ever discovered is technical tree climbing, and I don't think I've ever had a better workout than when scaling a giant sequoia. (Or two in one day - would not recommend. Will probably not do again unless I absolutely have to.) It takes a substantial amount of balance, coordination, strength, willpower, and endurance to go 300ft in the upwards direction. (Without stairs. Stairs would be nice. I don't think the tree would appreciate it though.) I've never felt more accomplished than I did when reaching the tops of these monster trees. I've also never felt more winded than I did from the climb. I would say my reach epic quest goal thingamabober would be to get fit enough for those climbs to get easier. I would have a more solid plan than that, but at this point I'm not sure when I'll next be heading to California... so while it must remain a tentative thing, I'm sure I'll make it happen someday, and I can certainly work towards it for now. Now that I have completed shpiel-ing, I will return to working on my NFA 'Mindset' quests. (Yay!) And see how long I can stay away from eating sugar cubes. (Yes, really. But I left the box at work. This may end well for now? but poorly later...) (Also, I like parentheses.) (A lot.) Looking forward to meeting y'all!
  18. It's my first month, so I'm going to keep it simple and set myself up for success. Which isn't to say I'm not going to challenge myself. This will be tough, especially with finals coming up. But I can do this! Starting with my Master Quest, because it guides all of my other quests. Okay, deep breath: Master Quest: Lose 87lbs Okay, that was terrifying to type, but it's out there. And now for the challenges that will get me there. Food Challenge Eating a vegetable with one meal every day Track all of my food. ALL of it. Accountability is KEY Fitness Challenge I recently joined a workout facility that offers classes as well as free weights and a pool. I've created a weekly workout guide, but for the challenge, I'm going to focus on my main goal: Complete a month of StrongLifts 5x5 Swim 2x/week Level Up Your Life I started a meditation class last week, so I want my goal here to be keeping a consistant practice. 5 minutes of meditation daily Check in to NF daily to post my progress - accountability again! READY
  19. This is my first challenge - I know it's part-way through the session but thought it would be best to get started! My story: I used to really enjoy jumping about and climbing trees, but I've been way less active recently (mild fibromyalgia combined with an abiding love for video games). I want to have a strong, healthy, androgynous body, and be powerful and agile like a wolf. And playful, too. CHALLENGES Diet: I read Steve's post on intermittent fasting, and it really resonated with me considering that I tend not to eat breakfast anyway. I'd been trying to have protein breakfasts to level up to Level 4, but IF makes so much more sense. So, my diet challenge is to only eat between 12noon and 8pm (drinking water, peppermint tea, and black coffee outwith those times). Fitness: To do the Bodyweight 1A/B workout at least 2x per week Life: This really relates to fitness too, but I'm putting it in "life" because a) I needed a "life" challenge and it isn't JUST about fitness...so my life challenge is to start playing softball again. First game is tonight!
  20. Time to get serious Life has been throwing a fair amount at me. My father passed last August, My sister got diagnosed with the early stages of heart failure a month ago (She is 22, with the years to live without a transplant), I don't have a job at the moment, and my girlfriend and I are about to break up. I have wallowed in my anxiety and depression for long enough. I need to be strong for my family. I must develop the mindset of a warrior. There can be no more failure. Quest 1: Build a solid foundation. In this quest I will abide by one rule. Work out everyday. I don't have access to a gym at the moment but I do have a kettlebell/pull-up bar. I understand that working out everyday may not be the best in the long run but it is mainly to build a warrior mindset/prepare myself physically. This workout is cumulative throughout the entire day. Workout is as follows. 50-100 push-ups 100 air squats 100 crunches 100 kettlebell rows 50-100 kettlebell swings 5-10 pull ups Walk/Run everyday Sprints once per week. Loot: Gym membership, ability to accept Starting Strength quest. Quest 2: Get your mind right In this quest I will abide by 3 rules everyday. No technology after 9pm, meditate for at least five minutes, and do some sort of cold exposure (cold shower, cold bath) the mediation is self explanatory. Technology at night keeps my mind stimulated. This can lead to more anxiety. There is a lot of talk of blue light exposure from screens disrupting circadian rhythm as well. The cold exposure is recommended by a lot of people for its hugely beneficial effects on human physiology. Doing it everyday forces me to overcome discomfort for a greater reward. This quest comes with 4 life exception points. Meaning I could have some days out with friends without full failure. Loot: New Kindle and access to the Warrior State of Mind quest. (Will be described in next challenge thread if I pass) Quest 3: Eat big, don't pig This quest is all about diet (duh) The rules are simple. NO JUNK FOOD and eat a "paleoish" diet. This will include all safe starches. (Potatoes, white rice, tubers) and beans as I tolerate them well. Shoot for 130-150 grams of protein a day, and enough carbs to support my workouts. Healthy fats will be used to a large degree as well. Body composition is not my worry at the moment. Getting through quest one, and supporting muscle/strength is all I care about. Loot: A huge expensive sushi dinner at my favorite restaurant. Access to Godzilla Mass 5000 Bulking Protocol. (Lol) (Will be fleshed out in next challenge assuming I pass) Quest 4: Maintain the castle. Due to some complications my mother has had to move back to our old family home we have been trying to sell in NC. I am living in the home she and my dad bought in CO. She has a good job there, and is able to be with my sister. She has to bear the stress of two mortgage payments though, along with the weight of my sisters illness. With my father no longer around, and medical bills starting to pile up, I have to take action. By the end of this challenge I will have a solid job, and be paying rent. eventually taking over the full mortgage payment. I will also work towards cleaning out the garage, and doing a lot of deep cleaning here. This is one goal I cannot fail. Loot: Having the satisfaction of being a good son. Prerequisite to earning any quest rewards from 1-3. Access to the quests Puppy Lovin and So You Wanna Be Self Employed? This is a lot to take on, but I have never been more ready to make a change. I would appreciate any tips and support. Best of luck to everyone else doing their on challenges. We're all gonna make it!
  21. Um... so... hi? I'm new. Very new. Super new and equally as nervous. I am also 5'5-ish, 230-ish pounds and couldn't run a mile if my life depended on it. This is bad. I currently own a failing business in a town where I have no friends. This is also bad. I have goals. Good ones, with time limits and specificity and all those things good goals are supposed to have. (My fitness goals are: short term: Lose 23 lbs by my friends' wedding in August. Mid-term: do a pull up by... I'm actually not sure about this one. I have to figure out how much my backpack, i.e. my dumbbell substitute, weighs. Long term: Become Emily Kaldwin by 2018.) I have a battle plan, even though I am 800% certain at least one part of this battle plan is dumb. (I know ramen is not good for you, okay? But, guys, I gotta eat it.) What I don't have... well, I don't have a lot of things... but what I don't have that I'd really like is accountability. I mean, I say I have to lose 23 lbs before my friends get married, but they're my friends. They won't care how much I weigh or how bad I look in my bridesmaids dress. This goal was one I created for myself, and, honestly, they don't even know about it. My family has bigger things to worry about than my fitness journey. Don't get me wrong, they'll celebrate my victories, but they won't care if I skip a workout or eat a sugar cookie. And I don't know anyone in this town period, let alone anyone who will push me. I don't finish things very well. I'm terrible at it. I have an innumerable number of knitting and crochet projects abandoned, I've started writing thousands of stories and finished exactly three, I've started trying to learn French, Italian, Spanish, German, Russian, Mandarin, Japanese, and the violin. I am proficient in none of these things. And I'm not including all the times I've stared a diet and exercise program not to finish. So... what is the best way to use this website and these forums in such a way as to make me more accountable for my actions?
  22. Hello, all! I am Rhinsari, a 24-year-old private school administrative assistant in a moderately big city in the Midwestern United States. Call me Sari for short. I love all things Star Wars and have slowly been dipping my toes into the world of comic books. I've been lurking Nerd Fitness for a few weeks now, but this is my first time posting in the forums. I had written some long-winded post about how my slovenly lack of fitness was the fault of my upbringing, my job, health issues, where I live -- essentially, it was everyone's fault that I am an out-of-shape chubster but my own. Then I read Steve's post on sticking to your beliefs like Captain America and boy did that change my thinking drastically. I refused to stand up to myself and say, "No. I want this. I want to be better, do better for myself, and push myself." Instead, I said, "Oh, but obesity runs in my family..." or, "but my really difficult health/digestive issues make it hard to find a healthy, balanced diet to follow," and, "well, the doctor says I'm 'healthy,' maybe it's my destiny to just be fat." I placed the blame anywhere I could to make myself feel better for my lifestyle. In essence, my lifestyle is a choice. I choose to not workout. I choose to eat A LOT during the day. I choose to come home, plop myself in front of the computer and play hours of video games instead of balancing that with walking and playing with my giant Rottweiler (who ALSO needs to lose weight). I want to be better. I want to move forward in my life. And, mostly, I want to stop wallowing in pathetic self-pity. It's so warm and comfortable and familiar, but truly it's just a nasty, evil entity that is destroying any and all progress. But again, it's a choice to wallow in my self-constructed pity. (These, of course, are my personal feelings and beliefs. I know there are many who struggle in different ways. No two lifestyle changes are ever going to be the same.). I also want to go to law school. I took the law school admissions test last fall and did terribly. I am convinced that a lack of discipline (didn't study hard) and a lack of confidence (I am not as talented nor as smart as the others) torpedoed that test. ALRIGHT! Enough talking. Now for the goals. I am a 5'6" woman, 170-180 lbs (it fluctuates). This is the heaviest I have ever been. I haven't ever been fit, even when I was thinner. I want to lose about 35-40 pounds of fat and get stronger. I also want to run a 5k by this October and ultimately a 10k by next spring. And even my dog needs to lose weight! My Rottweiler, Maximus, weighs around 122 lbs. The vet would like for him to weigh between 105-110 lbs. I've already cut his food per the vet, but I really need to exercise him far more than I do. He's a weirdo that doesn't like fetch, but we do play a game that's similar to tag which he loves. When we walk it's about 1.8 miles. My diet is going to be a little bit more tricky. I have IBS (ew, I know) so that means certain fibers and fruits will make things...unpleasant. For example, I cannot eat certain fibers, whole grains, or large amounts of leafy greens. Even too much meat and veg can tear things up, so I tend to eat a lot of breads and pastas as that seems to help things run more smoothly. Clean eating is the way to go for my personal brand of IBS. As much as I'd love to go full paleo, it's just not feasible. I am a snacker, but I've been trying to train myself to drink water when I feel the urge to eat. Running is one of my favorite things to do. Unfortunately, I suck at it right now. Since I put on so much weight, it's just really uncomfortable. Everything jiggles around and clothes don't like to stay where they should. Nevertheless, I do indeed want to stick with it, most likely with a couch to 5k plan. I've done those before and they worked well. I also am starting to do yoga/body weight exercises on my off days. Overall, I want to be disciplined and confident. I am worth it. I deserve to feel good about myself, and I deserve to be my best. I'll be posting my progress, the good and the bad, in the daily battle logs forum. I think that'll do for now. I'm so glad I found Nerd Fitness. For the first time in a long time, I feel really hopeful. I'm so happy to be here.
  23. Hi, I'm Kirsten (aka Fyonha on SWTOR and related forums/podcasts/etc.). I just turned 45 and I'm super excited to find this Rebellion and its forums/fb pages (although I honestly despise FB and am not sure how often I can handle going to that Wretched Hive of Scum and Villainy.) So here I am on the forums hoping it will be more conducive to my happiness. Questions I have not found answers to: 1- How do I "shrink" my photo to <0.05mb? I'm a mac girl using a PC and I feel sort of un-nerdy with my lack of skills. 2- Has anyone created a spreadsheet that I can steal to track measurements? (Please don't make me create a spreadsheet! I'm hopeless with such things...) 3- Is it standard to create a personal thread for tracking progress, posting rants, etc.? Thanks in advance for reading this and assisting me if you can. Have a lovely day!
  24. My last two years have been extremely messy with hospitalizations and serious physical/mental health stuff... but now I'm ready to focus on getting my shit together. My goal is to develop a healthy structured life, and I'm looking to lose weight as well. I'm exercise averse, but my past attempts at staying healthy included me enjoying hula hooping, running (but in that tough discipline kind of way), or rowing machines. I've been snowboarding since I was 6, but it's clearly not the best sport to stay active year round. I see myself fitting in with the Druid class, but I'm inspired by BAMFs like Korra too. My stats so far: Age: 25 Identifies as a woman Height: 6' 1 (185 m) Weight: 240 lbs (109 kg) Biggest challenges: not eating regularly then having a junk binge, sedentary life, mental health BMI: 31.7 As for race: would I be an ogre to start? Physically I seem to build muscle quite easily.
  25. Hello all, I'm new here, currently doing my first challenge as a rebel before moving on to being a baby wolf assassin. I see people talking about protein powder on here, and I wondered if that's something to look into. I do eat meat, veg, quinoa (and eggs, sometimes - I don't really like them) but I do sometimes find it hard to eat enough protein. I'm currently doing IF (16-8) and being paleo-ish. I'm based in the UK. Since I'm dairy- and soy- intolerant, I was thinking of something like this. I know there must be other posts on here about this, but my searching didn't come up with them - so I'd love your advice, or links to other threads. TL;DR: Should I use protein powder? What kind is good that doesn't have dairy/soy? Thanks!
