  1. Hey guys so I'm once again trying to get in shape and figured I would ask for some advice since this site seems to be full of more like-minded people than others I've looked into. I figured I should give a little info first. I was just recently diagnosed with GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) and it was heavily implied that losing weight would help with my symptoms or its just going to get worse. My weight has always fluctuated and I'm currently at my heaviest. I've had periods where I lost a lot of weight but always gained it back because of work or school or something I used as an excuse. I'm also a bit of a picky eater and I really want to change that as well. I'm currently about to start back to college in a few days and I just know that my weight is going to get worse from stress eating and stuff so I've considered doing meal preps so that I don't just give into temptation but that whole thing is still new to me so I'm trying to wrap my head around how I might do it. With the whole GERD thing, its restricted a lot of foods that I can or can't eat (mostly tomato based food). When it comes to exercise, I have an exercise bike that I can use at home since money is going towards college and things might be hectic for a while with the schedule and work, So with all of this being said, I was wondering if you guys have any advice that might help me out? I'm open to anything like home work outs, examples of meal preps, meal prep containers, good recipes, or any advice. I hope this is the right area and I'm open to offering any other information that I may not have included.
  2. So here's my issue - My husband started this journey with me and has only agreed to eat a select few veggies (broccoli, lettuce, and cucumbers) - to be honest, I think that there are a lot of options that he is missing out on because of this unwillingness to try something new. I want to add more flavorful veggies to our diet, but I don't want to make more than one meal to accommodate what I feel like is someone being stubborn. It was kind of funny, the first day we started this, he sent me a picture of his salad he had for lunch that was half eaten to prove he did, in fact, eat a vegetable. I know that he's trying to change, and I know that it is and will be slow going, but I feel like I'm missing out on positive experiences that we could have with foods that are healthy, and I want to experiment with. We've agreed on a few things but it's been kinda difficult when it comes to healthy food. Our definitions of healthy are vastly different, and can cause a clash when it comes to dinner. He's someone who grew up with unhealthy choices in the home (I did too, but mine was interspersed with the occasional healthy food) and it definitely bled over into his adult eating habits. If he could he'd completely live on fried chicken, hamburger helper, pizza, mac and cheese and soda - and never have to look at a vegetable. Which I can't do, because I have always known to add veggies to my diet and honestly feel a slight twinge of guilt each time I actively choose not to add them, but I just never took the time to make it a point to have them at every meal, and it got easier and easier to eat like crap. It would be nice to be able to hide veggies in the foods that we do eat, but I can't even be seen preparing them for dinner or there'll be an argument over me making him try something he doesn't want to. So, for now, I feel like I'm stuck, and I'm a little worried that all this work that I've put into this will fail because I am going to get frustrated and give up. TL:DR - If anyone has a way to make veggies not so scary to my picky husband, I'd be grateful.
  3. I asked this same question on the MDA forums, and it went over surprisingly badly... So, Nerds, I come to you for help. Maybe it's more common among people who are so thoughtful about things, but have any of you overcome pickiness as an adult? My boyfriend is super picky, but wants to eat better. He's about halfway there, loves salmon and spinach, but only raw, undressed spinach and we can't afford salmon for every meal. He doesn't eat fat, but has realized that ODing on Toast Um Pop Ups makes him feel terrible. He also doesn't eat breakfast or lunch, and his athleticism and energy levels are suffering. How did you inspire yourself to eat better and be less picky?
  4. I'm looking for some resources to start building a menu for me and my 3 year old son. Good ideas for pantry staples. Chicken is my sons and I's favorite protein. We do eat other meats on occasion. My son is a picky eater just as I am, he likes veggies. I'm not a fan of them. Thanks in advance guys.
  5. I am horrible about eating vegetables. I really don't want to or refuse to eat most of them. Right now, I'll eat lettuce for salads, carrots, corn, peas (though I'd rather not), potatoes, and celery (only if I have to). I know I need to do better about eating more vegetables, but I'm having a hard time finding "good" suggestions online. Everything almost always ends up being "You're an adult. Suck it up." and doesn't give any practical advice for where to start beyond roasting everything. I'm rather leery of cooked vegetables outside of potatoes. I don't know if I had a bad experience when I was younger that I'm blocking out or seeing stereotypical reactions to cooked veggies on tv is altering my opinion or what. So anyway, my question is this: Does anyone have any suggestions for what kind of vegetables I should start with to increase my palate? I've heard that jicama, if you can find it, can be a good start because it's sweeter and has an apple-like texture. I'm also going to try sweet potato chips. I don't think I'll ever get to eating them mashed - something about the texture (ironic, I know) of mashed potatoes bothers me. I'm also considering cucumber because I don't mind watermelon, even though it's not something I would regularly eat.
