  2. Hello! This is my second challenge, but I only got to do four weeks of the last challenge because I started late. So, I'm here to try again from the beginning. Some of my goals and motivations are the same as those from the last challenge, but I also changed some. Main Quest My main quest is to continue to improve my overall health and fitness, and to reduce stress by exercising and meditating. Missions 1. Run 3x per week with the Zombies Run app. Grading: A - No missed days B - 1-2 missed days in a week C - 3-4 missed days in 2 weeks D - 5-6 missed days in 2 weeks F - 7-8 missed days in 3 weeks 2. Do bodyweight exercises 3x per week. Grading: A - No missed days B - 1-2 missed days in a week C - 3-4 missed days in 2 weeks D - 5-6 missed days in 2 weeks F - 7 or more missed days in 3 weeks 3. Meditate for at least 10 minutes per day. Grading: A - No missed days B - 1 missed day in a week C - 2 missed days in a week D - 3 missed days in a week F - 4 or more missed days in a week Life Quest I must study for my final exams. Grading: A - Studied at least 2 hours per day B - Studied at least 1.5 hours per day C - Studied at least 1 hour per day D - Studied at least half an hour per day F - Studied less than half an hour per day Motivation My motivation for exercising is to get stronger and healthier, so it takes less effort for me to do everyday activities such as carrying groceries from the supermarket. Also, with final exams right around the corner, I am motivated to exercise and meditate to reduce stress. Making sure I study for my final exams will also help to reduce stress and guarantee that I get good grades in all of my classes.
  3. Hey everyone, my name is Stacey and I'm brand new to the Rebellion! Literally, just purchase the Fitness Guide this morning and rather excited to get started. My main quest is definitely to lose weight, but I know at that point I'll want to tone up. I'd love to participate in Tough Mudder and hit the top 5% for time, but I've got a ways to go! Currently, I do workout throughout the week, but I'd like to get into a more routine .. well, routine. Actually designate days for muscle groups instead of doing whatever doesn't hurt on my body that day from the previous day's workout. Diet wise - needs improvement. I don't drink pop or any carbonated, sugar beverage. I eat red meat at least twice a week, and probably too many carbs. I've always wanted to try a gluten-free or Paleo approach, so this may help. I haven't had the chance to read the guide yet, as I'm at work on break and writing this immediately, but I've got high hopes that this'll be a great way to achieve my goals. Not sure where to start, what guild to consider, know little about the challenges, so any and all help would be fantastic! S.
  4. Some people say they are their own worst critic... And I'm starting to think that I take this so far to the extreme, it is probably my biggest hurdle on my journey to get fit.... Let me give you a few examples: 1) the women's fitness forum had a topic about how you perceive your body shape vs what it actually looks like... Most responses from other women were between 5-12.5% smaller than their perception... Me? I am 22.5% smaller than how I percieve myself... And even though that website told me...I still am thinking, "oh, they probably made a mistake, it's a UK website, it has to be a misconversion from cm to in." 2) I'm a teacher, I work 12 hour days preparing for a class with over half my students not meeting standard for their grade level. I have some challenging kids, but when a lesson doesn't go well, or a student does something naughty during an observation... I blame myself. Like, a lot. When my principal talks to me about different things she's noticed that weren't perfect... I honestly cry, then I get angry with myself for crying... Which leads to more crying lol ugh I'm crazy!!! 3) working out... I don't go on hikes or journeys with friends that involve exercise because I don't want to be last... I've been last my whole life... It revolves around people even in middle school trying to get me to hurry up and finish the mile so we can go... I haven't been to a gym in months, because when I go, I can never find a weight bench or treadmill next to someone who isn't training for a marathon or lifting competition... I know my self confidence de-rails my journey, I just don't know what to do about it! Can anyone help or is this going to remain in my quest log for the rest of my life?
  5. Hello, I'm Victoria. And this is my first ever challenge thread. You have probably assumed this from the title, but I am a HUGE Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit/Tolkien fan. I am a part of many fandoms, but The Lord of the Rings will always hold a very special place in my heart that cannot ever be erased. That being said, I must say that I am a hobbit through and through. I love gardening. I love reading my books. I love tea. I love rivers and trees and peace. I love good company and a cozy home. And perhaps most of all, I love food. Selecting it, cooking it, eating it, I love it all. The only downside is, I don't really love exercise. And therein lies my problem. My lifestyle has started to catch up with me, and I've gained a lot of weight over the years. I've tried so many different diets and eating plans, it's enough to make my head spin. I would get quick results, no maintainability, and I ended up in the same place that I started; and, sometimes I would end up gaining more weight than I had started with. I gave up for a little while, but eventually it got to a point that I said to myself, "This has got to stop." This is negatively affecting my health, my energy, my mood, and basically my entire life. Happiness is a choice, and I want to be happy with myself and my life. I heard about nerdfitness through a friend, and my immediate thought was, "Where has this been all my life?" I have read so many inspirational stories and positive messages, I was immediately eager to get started. Luckily, I joined at a good time since it's the beginning of a new challenge. So, without much further ado, I'm going to declare my quest to the world! Main Quest I want to lose some weight and implement healthy eating and exercise habits. Goals Try a variety of different exercises/fitness classes/dvds/whatever and find something that works for me. Cut out processed, fatty, and sugary foods/drinks from my daily diet and replace them with healthy whole foods. Take measures to decrease stress and increase energy and positive thinking. Side Quests Life Side Quest Make efforts to be neater and more organized in life (and in my apartment). Get accepted into Graduate School so that I can do good things for the earth. Fitness Side Quest Jog a mile without stopping to walk. (Train using the Walk to Mordor nerdfitness walk) Here's my motivation note to myself: Cheesy? Probably. But it works for me. I'm really just starting out, so my goals are a little broad. But, I think Samwise said it best when he said, "It's the job that's never started as takes longest to finish.†So, here I go! I look forward to beginning this journey with everyone. See you on the road! Also, if anyone else is interested in forming a fellowship, definitely let me know!
  6. My main goal: Quest My overall goal in this is to drop my body fat by 12%. I'm not really bothered by weight or size as these will work with it. I know 12% is a huge difference so it's not going to happen in 6 weeks but I can at least make a start! For this challenge I want to aim for the first 3%. I will do that by: 1) Running at least once a week even if it's just around the block (I hate running!) 2) Weight training at least twice a week for at least 30 minutes (I love weight training) 3) Going full paleo and cutting out the junk Life Quest Quit Smoking Motivation I want to smile when I look in the mirror or stand on the scales and I want my father (avid cyclist) to be proud of my weight loss accomplishments. Scoring Running: No run = 0 1 run = 1 2 + = 2 Weights: No weights = 0 1 session = 1/2 2 sessions = 1 3+ = 2 Note: Any other exercise (e.g. Game of squash) adds +1 bonus point Paleo: Tons of grains and bad carbs = 0 Half Paleo week = 1/2 Full week of Paleo = 1 Smoking: I can't even grade this, if anyone can help me that would be appreciated! Basically, if I quit I'm a hero and a legend and win everything because THIS IS MY BIGGEST DEMON. Overall Grades: A: 19+ B: 16-18 C: 12-15 D: 6-11 E: 3-5 F: 0-3 I will upload my starting images when I get back to my flat. Starting stats: Weight: 112kg Body fat: 27% Lean Mass: 81.76kg
  7. As soon as I discovered NF I knew I would be a warrior...why? Because lifting weird heavy stuff is fun! Lifting traditional weights is fun too. But this year had not been my best..the first 4 months were spent in PT rehabbing a tear to my labrum and rotator cuff in order to avoid surgery...then two good months, then the last month working through some ligament damage in my hip. So...my first challenge is simple...regain my once Samsonian strength through careful and planned lifting of less odd objects until I can once again lift said odd objects. OK maybe not quite like Samson but I am naturally strong, and discovered I had pretty decent maxes as a beginning lifter...I want to get back to them, and hopefully surpass them at the end of the year. How I am going to lift the cedars of Lebanon: (i.e sub challenge) 1. Paleo - I slacked off while I was injured...clean eating = better lifting...so goodbye grains, dairy, legumes. 2. Specific training plan - my normal routine plus a lil extra M/W - yoga T/TH/F - lift (oly/pl) & metcon S - yoga & endurance wod SN - tennis 10 - 20 minute bodyweight drill every AM (this is new, and how I am easing back into bench and squats since those are the two things that are hardest for me right now) 3. Accountability / Encouragement This is where I could use some serious help! I have a great support group here, but since my injury I am not as competitive as I used to be so I feel a little out of place. I'm not lifting my usual weights so I can't just rotate in. I have tried to use it as an opportunity to try to get to know some of the newer girls in the group...but I still get discouraged. I think a part of regaining my strength will be to branch out and meet new people. To share my love of lifting with people new to it, and we can encourage one another to do our best. And to cheer on my friends that are competing and doing well! I hope I can join them in December! I hope by the end if this six weeks I will be ready to start lifting strongman again...I miss kegs, logs and heavy ropes...I wish I could hug an atlas stone. :/

  11. In our last challenge, we watched as Chris-Tien struggled to recover from grievous wounds inflicted by a multitude of enemies. At the end of one of the coldest, longest winters on record, Ranger Chris had been abandoned by her companions and set upon by an ogre, a princess, and a two-headed hydra in rapid succession. Stretched beyond her limits, the Ranger prevailed but was very badly wounded. Looking for a place to hide and heal, she took a mis-step and fell into a deep, deep cave. Bleeding and bruised, she tried unsuccessfully for days to find a way out. Missing her pack, her weapons, and any means of creating a light source, she finally curled into a ball, exhausted, no longer caring if she lived or died. She didn't die. When Chris awoke after a long refreshing sleep, she realized to her amazement that she could see. And not only could she see, she saw an endless cave of wonders and treasure!! She explored the cave, noting valuable items and mounds of gold and silver. Her injuries and an odd clumsiness bothered her slightly, but she hardly noticed as she explored. As she passed by a huge mirror, she whirled around awkwardly to face the dragon whose reflection she spyed, ready to take on the beast despite her lack of armor or weapons. But there was nothing behind her. Curious, she looked again …. and realized that the reflection of a young, silver wyrm was her very own. As she neared the glass to gain a better look at herself, her breath frosted over the reflection. She realized what she'd been turning into - a northern variant of the silver dragons of the mountains - an ice dragon! It took some experimentation, but gradually Chris-Tien realized that she could shift between human and dragon form, and that she could only see in the dark in the draconian stage. Being a practical person, she put aside of mystery of HOW she could do this until after she had gotten out of the cave. After all, she had spent years in the Tower of Wizards and knew that the answers existed somewhere in that massive structure. And she had spent some months as an ogre while traveling through a cursed swamp. She knew she could figure this out. But first, she had to get out of her current predicament. -------------- At Nerd Fitness we don't care about past mistakes - so I'm not going to dwell on the past year's lack of success but rather learn from it. I didn't lose weight or develop much strength, but I did graduate, find a job, move, buy a house (and sell one!), and get promoted to being the college's IT Director (which was not a job I sought out, but someone had to do it…..). The only life change that we haven't accomplished yet is to get my husband a job near our home. But all of that change was stressful. And I fell back on old, bad habits of emotional eating and drinking too much. I did work out - mostly cardio with some strength training - and so I ended up maintaining my weight. A minor victory. This coming year, I am going to PWN my challenges and totally embrace being an ice dragon. (Stats are here: http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/SRD:Silver_Dragon) They are strong, healthy, smart, wise, and very charismatic. They are also armored, can fly, They are also impassive and intimidating, but they are lawful good … which means that they know the rules and follow them. As a director - I need to set and enforce policy. And convince people to follow my direction. It's not something I'm good at - and I need to develop the appearance and presence that will aid me rather than hold me back. Since we have about 7 challenges per year, that's about 28 habit changes to adopt gradually. Rough goals for the year: I am going to lose weight and get back down to my ideal, fighting weight range: 127 - 135 lbs. That's about a pound per week - so I have to stick with this part of the plan even between challenges! 1)Eat a rainbow of fruits and vegetables daily. I'm terrible at this and generally prefer to eat a lot of unhealthy processed foods. 2) Stick to my calories budget on myfitnesspal.com 3) Cardio every day: 10,000 steps or equivalent as measured by my Jawbone Up. Dragons are strong. 4)Get a personal trainer and follow his/her advice 5) Weight train - Bowflex 6) Weight train - machines at Anytime Fitness 7) Weight train - free weights 8) CrossFit training classes Dragons have amazing constitutions 9) Visit medical professionals: doctor, dental cleaning, optometrist, orthodontist 10) Get enough sleep (7.5 hours per night) Dragons are charismatic 11) Look the part - hair, makeup, and accessories 12) Decorate office 13) Meet all faculty members in the college 14) Have a lunch weekly with a peer 15) Stop picking at my chin!!!! Dragons are armored 16) Suit up! Buy and wear professional clothing (one outfit per challenge) Dragons fly 17) Stop drinking 18) Ankle exercises 19) Train for and run 5Ks Dragons are impassive 20) Meditate daily Dragons are intimidating 21) Martial arts classes Dragons are lawfully good 22) Set policies for online program Dragons are both smart and wise 23) Financial Literacy article 24) Financial Literacy book 25) Possibility spaces article Dragons love treasure 26) Save money for daughter's wedding 27) Retirement savings 28) Vacation savings 29) Good jewelry Next challenge - starting July 29th - in which Chris-Tien gets off her butt, climbs out of the cave, eats a rainbow, and shines in the sun!!! Gets off her butt - 10,000 steps per day (1 STR & 1 STA & 2 DEX) Climbs out of the cave - stop drinking and do ankle exercises (2 CON & 1 WIS & 2 DEX) Eats a rainbow - 6 servings of fruit and veggies (one each color) (2 CON) And shines! Dress professionally and set up office (4 CHA)
  12. Honored Grand Maester of the Adventurer's Guild, Today I sit at my table, quill in my hand whilst writing this letter to you. I hope it finds you in good health and even better spirits. With this letter I wish to officially submit my entry into the challenge. I think it's time to go out into this world and taste some adventure. Maybe I'll find strange creatures of all sorts on my path; wargs, gnomes, fairies and maybe even a unicorn. The gods may only know what lies ahead but I'm intent on finding that knowledge as well. For my quest I will travel north to the city of kings, Essentia. I shall take my place in the warriors guild as an apprentice. There I will rigorously train with the fighters of old and new to strengthen my body. I remember much from my time spent at the local armory so I will have heed in the knowledge that I am not going an utter novice. Goal (+3 STRENGTH) Train with the Warrior Guild 3 times a week. They have agreed to let me enroll into the first round of the Starting Strength challenge. Only 1 out of 10 apprentices make it to the next round, they say. I am determined to be that one. -Train 3 times a week strength training. The warriors guild recruiter took one look at me and told me that it would do me some good to train with the Scout Guild under the Adventurer's banner (I promise to bring honor to our guild). Goal (+1 ENDURANCE) The Scout Guild's recruiter agreed to recommend me to the Birds of the Night, a great faction of the guild who train only the fastest and most experienced of the scouts. There I will participate in only a part of the novice practices. Too much would surely be the end of my life he assured me. -One High Intensity Interval Training of twenty minutes (either sprints, rowing or cycling) a week. The noblest of guilds ask nothing but curiosity from their subjects. Such is the case with the Adventurer's. Any other guild however value dexterity more than any other trait found in a man. For conviction is what makes the impossible possible, the unthinkable true and the weak strong. Those were the words the party leader of the recruiters said. Goal (+3 dexterity) Those in my region eat what is known as 'brown bricks' and drink the 'poison of the fruits'. These are known to poison a man's heart and body and cloud his mind. To show our strength of will we must abstain from these substances like it was the Forsaken One's own gift. -Cut out all chocolate and soft drinks from my diet. A wise man once said that bravery can only shown in the face of fear. If that is true than this is my chance to be brave because I have never been more afraid in my life. But fear shall never stop me on my path. It is one foe that shall always be slain. I begin my journey with hope. Hope shall soon turn to regret and regret to joy. To use your words: 'Leaves may change colour and wither away but the tree still stands. Strong and proud against the wind.' Awaiting to serve, Rippley, Adventurer Subject to the: Guild of the Adventurer-Dark paths, long roads, bright hopes.
