  1. I’m a huge fan of Orphan Black. Can we say holy awesome kick ass women!? So for this challenge I will be drawing from the show, as well as doing a rewatch of the series. I hope I've done this first post right. Season 1 (Sarah) Quest 1: Run a 5K and 5 miles in order to escape Prolethean dirt bags. Couch to 5K (run 3 times a week) Drink 3 glasses of water a day Vegetable with every meal (breakfast isn’t necessarily necessary) Season 2 (Helena/Alison) Quest 2: Make a meal worthy of Helena’s appetite with Alison’s homemaking skills twice a week. Find cookbooks Make a meal plan for the month Do not waste food! Leftovers are your friend Season 3 (Felix) Quest 3: Strength train 3 times a week to get a hot clubbin’ bod. Drink a recovery smoothie after each strength training sesh Do a 30 plank every morning and every night Do 5 pushups every morning and every night Season 4 (Cosima) Quest 4: Find an apartment in Seattle and activate full geek monkey mode. Go to 2 viewings a week Start Tuesday and Wednesday mornings by looking for apartments for 10 minutes Spend time in Seattle having one little adventure a week And as far as the Academy goes, I would like to make it to Level 4 by the end of the challenge. So there it is...Welcome to the trip, man.
  2. I had second thoughts about this post of mine looking for a fitness buddy. I think I'm "drinking the koolade" a little by completing a NF quest that asks me to partner up with people for accountability and motivation. I don't REALLY need this part. I figure if I naturally run into somebody that seems like a good person to team up with, then maybe I'll do it. But actually I've tried it already and it was a pain in the ass to get anybody to meet on a regular basis, or commit to much of anything at all. We had 3 gym meet-ups and it sorta petered off. In the end, I feel like I'm expending more energy that I get back from it. So I'm not going to push to co-mingle my fitness goals with other peoples'. Original "ad" content below deleted. No sadness about it.
  3. Remember how Frodo was so weak-willed that Sam had to drag him kicking and screaming up Mount Doom? I need that. I actually need more than a workout buddy, since I got into this through the Level Up Your Life Book and not through NerdFitness directly. I need a fellow adventurer to help me transform my life into an epic saga. Don't worry, I have plan. I just need someone to help me go through with it, and maybe join me on my adventures. Must want to travel, love of music preferred. Mount Doom awaits!
  4. Hello! I'm a Seattle resident and am looking for anyone interested in going on hikes. I come from Florida where hiking is nonexistent, therefore making me a bit of a novice to this really fun way to exercise. Any other outdoor geeks out there?
  5. Hello! Let's open with the classic flashback sequence... Once, I studied Okinawan Karate (shorin-ryu) and played active racquetball. 5'10", a healthy 170-ish pounds. That was the mid-90s. After an ankle injury, I eventually took up Tai Chi and light weight training. Then it was a rotator cuff injury. Then a divorce. Then a move from Ohio to Seattle. Then a re-marriage. A house. A son. A new office-based job with less movement. A new house. A lot of stress in the office job, too much beer, and a decade of playing World of Warcraft... Today? 47 year old male (48 in November). 5'10". 207 lbs. Decent blood pressure, recently down from "pre-hypertension", no worries on cholesterol and such. According to the motion tracker in my iPhone, I average 2 1/4 miles a day (taking the dog for walks, mostly), and 14 flights of stairs. Still do occasional day-hikes - the outdoors is why I moved to the PacNW. Recently laid off, and pretty damn happy about it (why do you think my blood pressure has come down?) I just did my first Beginner's Bodyweight Workout (15 lb dumbbell for the rows) first thing this morning after stretches and some water - and 2 circuits blew me out. Sitting down with some water to recover, honestly felt for a few moments like I was going to throw up (30 minutes later, fully recovered). Goals? I'd like to get back down around 190 and bring my waistline down from the 40" I just measured (jean-makers lie!). Doable. Oh, yeah, new job wouldn't be bad, either. But I think that's outside the scope here - let's focus on the fitness. --Jim
  6. I'm planning on doing the Run Scared 5K on October 26th in Seattle. It will be the first 5K and I plan on running the full thing. If anyone is planning to go or thinking about it, maybe it would be fun to meet up or plan a costume idea. It's $35 to register and here is the link to the website: http://www.runscared5k.com
  7. I am just curious if anyone is going to PAX Prime in a week and a half. I am going Saturday and Sunday. Maybe we can set up a meet up or video game battle
  8. Hey all, I have a membership to 24 hr Fitness and am looking for a workout buddy. I prefer the Northgate gym as it's nicer. I can workout in the mornings or evenings. I would love someone who prefers to split their workouts 1/2 cardio, 1/2 weights/strength training. I would also like someone who's focused on eating healthy as I really need some accountability with that. I'm a 32 yr old female. I don't care if my sidekick is male or female.
  9. Hey Rebels - I've been lurking around these forums for the last week and it's time to get down to business. Main Quest: My main quest is to lose weight and gain some consistency in life in regards to diet and exercise. My weight has been in constant flux for the last 4 years ranging from 190 - 246 lbs (currently at 229 lbs). I want to have the most fun possible in life and this Challenge is another step in that direction. Mission Goals: Cardio -- Run a mile in under 7:30 (currently 8:50) Body weight -- 4 unassisted pullups in a row (currenty at 1) Diet-- bring a packed lunch to work (success > 90%)Prize for completing all goals: New pair of jeans. Life Quest: Put away $750 for a vacation next year. My plan is to update this thread as often as possible with my updated progress.
  10. Hey all - Been reading the forums and such for the last week and decided to sign up today and join the forums / Challenge. I'm a 27 year male working as an auditor for a CPA firm in Seattle. Over the last 4 years I've seen my weight range from 190 to 246 pounds, I'm currently at 229 lbs and 5'9". My biggest issue is consistency. I typically diet/exercise well for a month or two and then fall off the wagon, hence the fluctuations in my weight. I need to start making habitual changes in order for the diet/exercise to become more a part of my lifestyle. My main goal in life is to have as much fun as possible. While I think I do pretty well, I know there is more fun to be had for a fitter, slimmer me. Looking forward to taking advantage of everything NF had offer!!
  11. Helloooo fellow Rebellians! So, for an introduction, I felt I should take the RPG IRL article as inspiration and create and actual character sheet. I haven't set my physical and mental goals yet, but I will be soon and I felt that creating this character sheet is really going to help me achieve this. Feel ABSOLUTELY FREE to take this idea and run with it if you think it might work. I know its effectiveness is highly subjective, so no worries if you don't want to. That said, thank you for taking the time to check it out! I hope to be a good part of this community, offering help where I can, and getting the support that we all need from each other. To me, the base stats can mean whatever you want, such as perception. It might mean something completely different to me than to you. Also, my way of measuring the base points has no real math basis, They are just what I feel I have to work with on my personal scale. Make sense? This was an interesting experiment for me. I think when someone tells me to really sit create goals, this is what I should have thought to do first. I feel that it really helped me take a second and figure out what I am working with, which will help me identify where I can begin to change, mark progress, and get things going. I think one of the key things I discovered writing this out were the character perks. I often don't think about the good things that I have, and now I have them written out. I have many more things that i can use for tools now that I think about it (parents, friends, etc.) but I felt that those were more external resources than immediately available perks. I don't know, but without further adieu, here is my personal Character Sheet. Race: Human Permanent Physical Attributes: Sort of Tall, scar on face, a few tattoos, curly hair, blue eyes, a few lipomas here and there. Current Adjustable Physical Attributes: Slight beer gut, average muscle definition, not strong, but not weak. Base Stats: (out of 20) Strength: 10 Intellect: 13 Agility: 8 Stamina: 10 Charisma: 9 Perception: 5 Luck: 8 Confidence: 6 Speed: 9 Special Trait: Emotional Stability Emotional Stability affects the character’s ability to handle life situations. It can be influenced by almost everything. Emotional Stability follows a 7 point chart. Whenever you are rolling to add or subtract to emotional stability, start at 4. Emotional Stability will only reach 0 if a traumatic experience happens. See the “Charts†Section for a breakdown of the Emotional Stability Chart Profession: Artist Artists are an interesting bunch. They use their ability to dream and relate their life experiences to create the aesthetics of the realm. They can work hand in hand with almost any industry. They are similar to musicians, using visual representations to create emotional reactions and convey thoughts or feelings.. Character Perks: Pets: Constant Companions. Pets provide the owner with the ability to deal with social problems in a small way, add 1 to Emotional Stability when interacting with character. Must be fed and cleaned up after on a regular basis. They will occasionally piss off the character. Roll a D6 every so often. Even numbers mean nothing. Odd numbers subtract 1 from emotional stability. However, if you roll the same number more than 6 times in a row, something dire has happened. Emotional Stability is at 0 for an undetermined amount of time. Job: Source of income. Job provides the character with an ability to support themselves in the economic world. Perk special attribute: Job can boost or lower certain attributes. Tinkerer: Based on intellect. The character enjoys finding out how mechanical things work. Add.5 for each 2 points of Base intellect to skills related to mechanical know-how. Nerd: This perk is a side effect of Interests. Usually based off of intellect, but there are many exceptions. Provides the character with a large number of ways to connect with random other characters in the world. Can be the basis for Friendship. Technological Hobbyist: The character likes technological advancements and tends to try and keep up with them in the world. Not a profession. Adds .5 for each 2 points of base intellect to skills having to do with electronic devices. Allows for easy access to the internet for research purposes. Sympathetic: The character has great passion for the well-being of other living beings, be that sentient or not. Moral alignment +1 Randomizers: Empathetic: Character feeds off of other character and animals emotions. Roll a D6 whenever the character is interacting or near another character. 1-3: Subtract from Emotional Stability the number the D6 reads. 4-6: Subtract 3 from the number the D6 reads, add the difference to Emotional Stability. ex: Character rolls a 2, subtract two from Emotional Stability. Character rolls a 6, add 3 to emotional stability.(6-3=3) Character Flaws: Character flaws can be changed for better or for worse depending the characters perception and willpower. Root Flaws take quite a bit longer to identify, heal, and overcome than minor flaws. Selfless to a Fault: Root Flaw Though the character has the ability carry great passion for all other living beings and their troubles, he hardly spends any time thinking about himself. He has covered his other character flaws with a blanket, only covering up his ability to identify and stop the growing flaws he carries. This character flaw leaves him unbalanced and in a constant state of emotional instability, resulting in good highs, but very low, lows. Subtract one more point from emotional stability if it ever is below the median of 4. If this results in a 0, the character has lost his ability to cope with the situation, and goes into a state of complete vulnerability. Porn Addict: Root Flaw The character has ingrained in his mind a “feel-good†neural pathway related to pornography. This addiction flows out into his everyday life causing mental strife and confusion. Certain situations can heighten the response. Women in revealing armor cause a slight effect. TV shows and films containing overtly sexual, sensual, and softcore scenes cause a higher effect. If the character is attempting to destroy this flaw, he will become irratible, sad, and full of despair randomly throughout the recovery process. This will consume a high amount of energy to keep willpower from falling too low. While the character is attempting to remove the Porn Addiction Flaw, all Emotional Stability rolls related to situations relating to Porn Addiction take an additional 25 points of energy from the energy bar. If this drops his energy level below 25 points, he will need to sleep. If it drops his energy level below 0, he will not sleep, and the thoughts will consume him for a short time. Roll D6 in this case. 1-5, he will make it through without a relapse, though he will start the next day with 25 points less on the energy bar. If a 6 is rolled, he has relapsed, and suffers a -2 to willpower for the next day. Smoker: Character habitually smokes cigarettes. -2 from base stamina and -15 from the health bar while this Character Flaw is in effect. This means that the maximum stamina that can be achieved is only 18/20 points until this flaw is removed from play. There is one benefit to smoking, It does allow the character to “take five†in almost any situation, giving him a second to level out Emotional Stability one point. note: There is an item out in the world that is rumored to reduce the stamina and health deductions by half, and helps the character quit smoking in the long run. Keep your eyes peeled for such items. They are not permanent, but for a short time they will help until the character quits for good. Procrastinator: This flaw puts the character in a perpetual state of “i can do it tomorrowâ€. Waiting until the last minute to finish certain things. This can be anything from Chores, to school work, and assignments from a Job. 100% of projects related to Job, Career, and Living will be finished, but not necessarily to the best result. Hobbies and side projects suffer the most from this flaw, resulting in almost 90% of hobby projects done outside of work, school, and chores, unfinished. Energy Potions: Different from coffee. These alchemical concoctions will boost the character’s energy 10 points whenever consumed, but at the expense of an equal amount of health points. The effects last about 4 hours, after which, subtract 15 from the energy bar. Use sparingly if at all. Items: Bicycle: Saves money on gas. Requires energy to use. As the user gets used to using the bicycle, the energy consumed will drop at a slow rate. energy consumption is variable depending on a whole host of situations ranging from distance ridden, hills, weather, starting energy, clothing, etc. Car: Consumes Gas, costs a variable amount for upkeep. Car provides transportation faster and greater distances than Bicycle. It also allows the user to carry more items. Add 4 slots to inventory if driving Car. Car also saves energy provided it is working properly. Computer: Used for a great many things. Can be a problem for the porn addiction flaw if the character has not taken steps to attempt to remove Porn Addiction. The computer is non-negotiable, and must be used. Avoiding its use altogether affects the characters ability to function in the current technological world he lives in. Cell Phone: Variable Upkeep. cell phone allows the character to communicate with other characters when not at home. Provides a vital lifeline in some situations, and a problematic distraction in others. Character must learn to balance use of this technological advancement. Clothes: They are clothes! All characters must have some form of clothes! Even nudists have some clothing here and there. they offer protection, and provide unique styles to the user, creating a sense of security, humility, and individuality. Some clothes protect the physical form better than others. Be sure to check the armor rating depending on what the character is doing. Watch: Allows the user to tell time and keep appointments. Journal: Extremely useful tool to help with removing Root Flaws. Use whenever necessary to help return Emotional Stability to a manageable level. Can be used even when ES is at 0.
  12. Hello Fellow Rebels (that's fun to say =P) Smilen here with a pre 3 week update and some pictures! I had started a 3 week challenge to change my diet and work out every day because I had joined in the festivities of Nerd Fitness halfway through the current challenge period. Instead of waiting, I decided to take some action and get some habits going (21 days toward habit creation right?) So, come this Friday 7/12, I will have 3 weeks of consistently eating Paleo (with 1 or 2 slips ups that left me feeling pretty sick) and doing the body weight workout along with Intervals every other day (weight lifting one day, interval the next, repeat). I am incredibly pleased, not only with my consistent effort, but my results as well! I now have muscles popping up in places that never really had before, and am more confident with my body then I have ever been. I feel healthier and my skin has been clearing up (I had pretty bad and self-esteem lowering acne on my face for the past 3 months). I am now speaking the magic of Paleo and working out to anyone who will listen and I know I am making an impact on my friends mindset and lifestyle as well. Attached are Pictures of the beginning of my venture and then a 2 week after shot of my improvements. The quality is so-so and the lightning got crazy in the second set (WOAH GREEN), but I kind of like it. I cropped the pictures so that I could fit all of them. I will be taking more pictures this Friday and then start my new challenge!
  13. Hello There Community! Because this is the second time I am writing this(omg Back button I hate you), it will be slightly condensed and will lack some of my personality (which may or may not be a good thing) QUICK BACKROUND! -Born and raised in Renton! (it's like a mini, very boring Seattle) -Closet Nerd: Loved my time with FF3, WoW, LoL, Bioshock, MTG, but I refuse to begin a conversation with them, and will change the topic to something else as soon as I can (I don't enjoy the nerdy limelight much) -Ex-Cross Country Runner - Future Parkour Traceur: The long grind of 6-10 miles never really sat well with me although I was gifted with natural endurance. After watching the opening credits for 'Tempest Freerunning Academy' long ago, a new desire to jump and crawl over everything emerged. -Never excelled in anything due to a 'Jack of All Trades' (master of none) mentality, complete with a hint of laziness and a dash of apathy. I'm here to change that. Because I missed the date for the 6-week challenge, I issued myself a 3-week challenge (starting 6/21) that will go to the end of the 6-week in which I will reevaluate and redirect my goals as they need to be. Goals are as such: Workout DailyBody Weight WorkoutLoving this workout. It's quick, simple and ultimately, effective (so far at least) I am using the Perfect Pushups to add a bit of variety and it is working splendidlyInterval Running WorkoutAwhh.... Reminiscing in my days of interval cross country workouts. We would do 'Little Indians", where 10-15 of us would jog in a straight line, and the rear runner would sprint to the front and set the pace (I would always push it haha) and the next rear runner would sprint up.........*memories*Eat ALL the PaleoI have been able to replace every meal with a Paleo alternative and I am greatly enjoying it. Morning: Paleo Oatmeal (omg look it up it's soooo good) and then I usually vary between Chicken or Pork with a Kale Salad. I'll be picking up a cookbook to add some more variety to my life (variety is the spice of life!)PS. I just discovered 'Paleo Pizza' is a thing (You can make crust out of Cauliflower! WTF MATE?!)Talk to a New Person Every DayThis is something I've been working on doing for a while, though now I am really stressing it. Don't worry, I'm not desperate about it (You! Please talk to meeee, I have GOALS TO COMPLETE)I usually just say something (almost anything) that the target and I can observe (ok target was a terrible word for this) and then before I think too hard, I say it (First though best thought). And then I ask a question or say something off of what they said (otherwise they would get all confused and I'd have to start all over again)Read and Apply 'The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth' by John MaxwellIf you haven't heard of John Maxwell, or read one of his books, I highly suggest this to every person looking to improve their life. The title above or 'Failing Forward' are some great places to start. He is the leading authority on Leadership and Development using his organization "Equip" to train and develop leaders across the world. If anything, just look up some of his talks on Youtube. This is the beginning of my accountability to stay consistent with the items I have stated above (even if no one sat through to read this). I will begin to record my process soon (probably tomorrow) and I'll take some pictures to compare with later so we can see some results. I am really enjoying Nerd Fitness for it's mission to include everyone they can inspire on their quest for widespread leveling (not the "OMG A SEA CREATURE FROM SPACE IS DESTROYING EVERYTHING" kind of leveling). Also love the fact that NF touches on health, diet, social integrity and general awesome. Again, very excited to embark on this journey. Thank you Steve for starting this community, and thank everyone who is a lively part of it and continues to encourage. Keep it Real =D
