  1. I am returning to Nerd Fitness after being away since February 2017 (A Journey of a 1000 Stairs) where I attempted to do 1000 stair climbs and lose weight accumulated and maintained post the birth of my 2nd son. I succeeded in getting down to about 180lbs from about 200 lbs. I did not reach my dreamed of 165lbs. Instead, I got pregnant with my third and final child (a dreamed of daughter) and my weight bounced right back up to 220lbs at the height of the pregnancy. For the first time I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes - which made for interesting self experimentation with a blood glucose reader and many meals. I had my baby girl in May of 2018. Recovery was better than it had been with number 2 - at least I did not have drop foot! AND I was super active before and after the birth. However, something about turning 40 and having gained all this pregnancy weight - my weight went down to 190 and then did a massive up turn back to 110. I have been hovering between 202 and 206 lbs ever since. So - given my NF experience... and I signed up to Mutu Mamas and had a physio as well in the early days post pregnancy (diastis rectii). So here I am thinking, I am crossing the T's and dotting the i's and yet.. not a single budge of my weight. This is the least stressed I have been in eons. I am not working, I have the time and ability to go to the gym at max 2 hours per day... I spent a lot of time in an active upright state. I eat wholesome healthy home made food. I work out at least three times a week and I get a decent (if not enough) amount of sleep. I haven't eaten my children yet. I have a weakness for sweets and baked goods but I am not as glutton as I have been in the past. I practice a great deal of restraint. Breastfeeding may play a part and be a factor with regards to hormones that are involved in retaining weight. So bringing it down to basic things that affect my weight - I will make an effort to drink more - I will make an effort to sleep more - I am aware breastfeeding hormones are a thing As far as diet goes, I have started Intermittent Fasting as of last week - too soon to see any difference - and last week I went to the gym for a two cardio box classes, one aquafit class, one yoga, and one anti-gravity restorative class. That's four times! This week I've already gone in for a 20-20-20 class (step meets weights). Plan is to go to the gym at least three times a week. At least one time for a yoga/restorative session. That leaves food - Granted with three kids and a bunch of carb eating junkies... I am pretty good at keeping things home made and nutritious. I started baking my own bread! So given that I started regime above only last week - too soon to tweak anything here. (I did a MFP check and my daily calories are around the 1650 mark.. so not terrible).
  2. This is the beginning of my journey, and I need your help. My name is Lindley. I am an ICU nurse with a really shitty night schedule. I am 5'1" and the heaviest I have ever been at 163 pounds. I was in a very unhealthy five year relationship, had two sons with the individual, and am now a single mom. I struggle with Borderline Personality Disorder, depression, anxiety, binge/purge, and PTSD. Now for the thing that sent me over the edge... June 12, 2016, I woke up and discovered my 5 week old son (Ronin August) had died from SIDS during a nap. Needless to say, it was the single most traumatic experience of my life and it's left me with an overwhelming feeling of hopelessness and apathy. Any kind of will to live just went out the window, let alone any king of will to get healthy and back in to shape. Now, just waking up and doing day-to-day things is a struggle. I live in Oklahoma and have a very limited support system (one friend within physical proximity, and my mom and aunt available via telephone). I'm maxed out on my antidepressants and I go to hypnotherapy 4 times a month (which is not cheap!). Also, I'm now hypertensive and I just FEEL the toll this is taking on my body. I don't feel good. I used to be very in shape. I loved being active and eating clean. But now, the smallest things are a challenge. I don't want to live like this, but the sadness overwhelms me. I am reaching out to this community because there is still a sliver of something inside of me that wants me to "get better". I'm searching for support. I've tried to be mentally healthy, thinking my body would follow suit, but that obviously didn't work. And now I need a different approach. I want to be healthy for my remaining son (Olin Anthony). We all have struggles. We all have our crosses to bear. I would love to hear what others have overcome and how they did it. Tell me your story.
  3. Welcome back doodlies! And what shell we do this time? A battle between the waffles and the pancakes? Or something with the whole group? Let us know your ideas. Even the bad ones, because they can inspire someone else
  4. Hello all, As a sufferer of chronic pain linked to migraines and fibromyalgia, I personally would like a group that is primarily focused on getting past the pain in order to become more fit. Does anyone know where we Nerds may find a group like this? Or will this suffice to begin one of those groups? I know I am not alone in my struggle against chronic pain and I know others are out here looking for support. Perhaps those that have been in this longer may have some suggestions for getting past the pain and pushing through at the gym. Many of us are looking to meet our fitness goals but aside from the usual roadblocks, we are faced with seemingly insurmountable pain. Any ideas, suggestions, advice, or information is greatly appreciated. Thanks
  5. I'm pretty much a newb who has been dabbling at this for a bit. I am also making my way down this path of fitness and I'd be happy to offer encouragement and support. Sometimes I need a push in the direction of a little more structure, but I like advice and I'm open to it. I have fitness goals - namely get strong enough to do pull ups, deadlift my body weight, and lose 60lbs this year. That being said, most of my support is long distance (family in another state) while the people close, namely my husband is doing his best to be encouraging. His family (in state) is my biggest group of haters. He is remodeling the house with his father who is very unsupportive and dismissive of me. It's been a long haul for this introverted homebody to watch the guys tear my house to studs and redo pipes and electric. I was pregnant for 8 months of it and now they're still going strong and my baby is a 9-month old. I hope that doesn't sound like I am too whiny to be an encourager. I guess what I mean is that I think it makes me tenacious. I dig deep to ground and encourage myself and my husband, but I am looking for someone to talk fitness shop and encouragement and goals with away from the rest of things. I'm 29 and working my way back from 210lbs to a weight I can't remember being (150lbs.) I work full time and then have the little one, but I squeeze in workouts wherever I can. It's not easy and it's not my dream (which is to have my space and some peace n quiet with a home gym and fancy equipment of course!) but it's a damn sight better than it could be and I am proud of myself. And all I'm going to worry about is moving forward. So if you're looking for an online partner or someone to touch base with from time to time, let me know. If you're good or I don't sound like a match to where you're headed, that's cool too. Thanks for reading. Keep being awesome!
  6. I have decided to set up several sets of long-term goals. They center around recovering from a back injury, the desire to improve my health and overall fitness and to get my finances in order to buy my dream home. (This is currently a work in progress that will improve over the next couple of weeks) I have decided to start a Battle Log to keep track of my progress and to catch areas in need of improvement. The biggest change I plan to make is in the creation of my Builder Goals. In my reflections of my challenges this past year I have found that I can nail my goals in the short term, but after the challenge is over, I slide back into old habits. To prevent this I will create builder goals for physical fitness, healthy eating, water intake and generally good habits, that I want to maintain. I have decided that these will start out and primary goals during a challenge, but for the next challenge they will be moved into the builder goal. This goal won't earn more than 1 wisdom point, but I will also lose points if I don’t complete them. (I know this isn’t standard, but I’m not a standard rebel so bring it!) By the end of 2017 I want to… I want to improve my mind/body connection through the following goals... Explore several forms of traditional meditation Explore several forms of movement based practices (yoga, qi-gong, tai chi) and decide which one I can best incorporate into my daily life. Practice journal writing 3 times a week Write 2 letters a month Read 1 book every other week (This means starting a new book no later than every 3 weeks) Work on limiting my TV time to 2 TV shows or 1 movie a day I want to improve my hygiene and grooming practices. Brush twice a day, floss & rinse once a day (God! I hate rinsing) Set up a regular schedule for threading my eyebrows Set up 2 more treatments for laser hair removal I want to learn 3 nice hair styles for different activities (One professional, one active one sexy) I want to take “Makeup 101” class and get some good makeup I want to continue improving my eating habits and water intake Develop healthier eating habits for workday vegetarian diet (less processed and junk foods, more fresh prepared meals) Learn to prepare 3 Afghan dishes, 3 Turkish dishes and to try 4 different cultural dishes I want to make it habit to log my food and water intake daily and my weight weekly. (I will be using fitbit) To improve my finances I will work on these goals... I want to set up a “working” budget and practice following it. (I have a budget, but not super functional) I want to have $1000 set aside for emergencies by the end of the year I will either be in Grad School or a better apartment and job by the fall. I want to improve my physical fitness through the following methods… Weight no more than 270lbs by the end of the year Making my physical therapy a daily habit Start a simple strength training regiment Swim weekly (This is open to change if I get a new job where I don’t have access to a pool) Explore 3 different forms of self defense or martial arts (Plan on starting one full time in 2018) Start exploring Parkour Become proficient in Florentine flogging I also want to meet the following physical goals by the end of 2018 Run 3 miles in 18:00 or less 80 sit-ups in 2:00 80 push-ups in 2:00 12 pull-ups Finally I want to have a healthy social life so I will meet the following goals… Attend tango twice a month Cuddle/movies twice a month 1 group outing a month 1 class or club outing a month
  7. In school? Studying for an exam? Super-huge thing coming up that you need to prepare for? Need support? Someone to hold you accountable? Then this is for you Trying to be healthy (work out, eat right, get enough sleep) juggle schoolwork, and work/family/social stress is tough...we can't promise to help you pass advanced accounting, but at least you're among others that understand what you're going through, and maybe pick up a few tips along the way
  8. Revenge of The Loft It has been a while! Welcome back to The Loft! A simple a humble space for all those rebels out there who wish to level up their creative side! This group is here to offer inspiration and support for all the writers, musicians, and artists out there. In the past threads I have been blown away with all the interaction, advice and sharing that has gone on and I hope to have that continue this time around. For myself I will admit that life has thrown some curveballs along the way that I have been pleasantly surprised with or completely overwhelmed. I am happy to be back and to bring this group back for some awesome fun times! I'm not sure about doing weekly topics since I have had a hard time tracking and keep those up, but any and all suggestions are welcomed and nothing wrong with a few creative exercises to get those imagination juices flowing :). Anywho, hope to see ya'll around these parts! Let's share some art!
  9. I joined NF in January of 2015. Since then I've failed to keep up on anything I "wanted" to do, NF related or not. This past month, I was diagnosed with depression, which, apparently, presents with some different symptoms in men than women. Looking back, my wife and I could see that I had been presenting with symptoms for about 6 months. Part of my issues is that I've been over-weight for as long as I can remember. I was picked on throughout school and it really had an effect on my self image. I'm getting older and realizing that something needs to change. That's why I'm going to try and be open about what I'm doing here and how it's going. I actually started on Friday of last week. My wife and I have been struggling to find yoga videos that we can do and like; we weren't finding anything, so I got NF Yoga. So far (it's only been a few days) we really like it. I especially like the mini-mobility videos that can be done in 6 to 10 minutes. They are great for the mornings before work. This is something I think we can get into. I guess if I am going to be honest, maybe I started on May 26th. That is the day I began hiking. I go for a hike on my days off (Thurs/Fri) and have done so consistently since then for the past few weeks. I've purchased some chicken breasts, kale, and rice for meal preps; something that I fail at often. I also have protein and a blender bottle. So far, I'm feeling pretty good, but we will see. I want to live up to my potential, I want to grind the earth with my epicness!

  11. Hello everyone. I just signed up for the Academy and I just started Crossfit a month ago here in Fort Myers, FL. All my recent reading has lead me to believe that Crossfit is a great way to start back on the road to getting into excellent overall physical condition but that it can sometimes be unbalanced as well as using what could be some dangerous workouts and/or combinations of workouts. I would like to see if anyone live in or near Fort Myers that would like to start a small Nerd Fitness group to help keep each other accountable and talk about fitness, etc. in an effort to keep each other balanced and on track.

  14. Hello, everyone! I've been in and out of the NerdFitness arena for a few months now. I'm a nursing student and have had a lot of trouble keeping motivated, finding time, and just keeping my sanity in general. I just recently have found my inspiration and motivation to forge ahead. I was excited to come across this forum so I could connect, support, and compete with my fellow rebels. I look forward to getting to know and working with you guys! -Neeko
  15. I walk away for a few weeks.... what the hell happened to my forge?!? Ohhh yeah.... kind of didn't put anything away and left things to fester Time to clean this up!!! So, I ghosted out right after the start of the last challenge, didn't have anything to contribute, left you all high and dry, and for all that I'm sorry Time to get back on track. The last month has been a considerable change for me and now it's time to get things organized, get things cleaned up, and get things better around here. Goal One: Heating Things Up In The Smelter I need to get the home fires burning hot and strong again!! I think with the adjustments that I've made to my life that I've let the fires burn down (more specifically my metabolism) and it's time to get that going again. Best way to do that.... get that exercise going again. I'm looking to do three workouts throughout the week. Whether they be walking the neighborhood (weather permitting), using the Xbox for exercise, or getting to bodyweight workouts, things must be done to stoke the fire and get them burning strong! Goal Two: Sharpening Things On The Grindstone I need to get things more refined, sharpened to a razor point. What better to sharpen than my cooking? Now that I'm in a situation where I am at home more often and less actively going towards fast food places for meals, it's time to start working on more things that I can make that will be both healthy and fulfilling for my body. Going to shoot for one recipe a week, something that I've worked on, made, and tested. Extra credit for making something that can be batch cooked. Goal Three: Hammering Things Out On The Anvil Once pulled from the fire, an object isn't shaped until it's been hammered out over the anvil. No, this isn't a goal for getting hammered every weekend (I'm too damn old for that crap ) but it's for building better habits for myself. This goal is still a bit of a work in progress, more soon. Life Goal: Stretching Things Out On The Skinning Rack This goal is a little more outside the box but none the less just as necessary. After the chaos, I've had to go through quite a few things and I have realized that I've got a lot of crap, physical, not so much emotional anymore. So what I plan with this goal is two-fold: One, to rid myself of some of the items in my life that I don't need and Two, to clothe myself in things that are more supportive to me (both physically and emotionally). Now, it's time to use some elbow grease and get this place cleaned up!!

  18. Welcome to the Doodlie Head Quarters We are the Nerd Fitness special forces. To be a doodlie is to succeed! We offer support and friendship. We are your drill sergeant, your shoulder to cry on, your cheer leaders. We love smut, we love perkele party's, we are awesome If you want to know more about us, and learn our language, read the doodlie newsletters. We have our own pvp. This challenge it will be a scavenger hunt. We have two universes: the griddle and the nuthouse. We separated because we grew too big. And we just want to follow everyone and support everyone, and that can't be done when we have to many doodlies. You can sign up here. If you are new to the doodlies, Team Peanutbutter is the place for you. This thread is ment for all doodlies. We post doodlie announcements here, new newsletters and we discuss the current pvp. We are often found in the Yak's Head. This is a line chatroom. If you want in, pleace add me as a friend in line and send me a message, I'll add you to the right line groups. My username is terah_nf Scoresheets: Griddle Nuthouse Update your scores every week, so we can see who's winning Rules for the pvp: Update your scores in the scoresheet before Tuesday, otherwise your score will be "0".Unless specifically mentioned: all items can be collected during the whole challenge, and don't have to be consecutive. So for example drinking just coffee/water/tea for 7 days can be 1 day in week 1, 3 days in week 2 and 3 days in week 4.An other example: you walk 2,5 km on Monday and 2,5 on Friday. Now you can cross off the "walk 5 km's"Everything you do counts for one of the items. So if you walked 10 km's, you can just cross off the 10 km's, not also the 5 km's. If you bike 15 km's it only counts for the biking challenge, not also for the cardio one. But if you, for example, are reading a book during your biking session you hit the biking goal AND the reading goal. Every challenge can be completed 4 times maximum per team. Each time you complete one of the challenges you'll get one point. And most importantly: HAVE FUN

  20. Hi everyone This accountabilibuddies group is a bit different. We're not here to set goals or keep each other on track. All we're here to do is prize each other, and ourselves. And other people in our lives. And post about it, often. Wait, what? Prizing - it's like praising, but different, and more effective! Praising focuses on the result of an action - a race won, a skill mastered, a piece of work finished well. Prizing focuses on who you had to be, to achieve that result - consistent, brave, reliable, hard-working, kind, thoughtful. An example: "I'm the kind of woman who makes her bed every day. I'm consistent, I'm neat and tidy, a real go-getter!" If that sounds weird, it's only because we're not used to doing it. It sounds awkward. But it has a powerful impact on our non-cognitive minds (subconscious, unconscious, whatever you want to call it) - the more we prize ourselves, the more we trust ourselves, and the more likely we are to do things that are good for us. It's like winning by running backwards, suddenly you cross a finish line you didn't even know you were heading for. There's science-y stuff behind it all (growth vs fixed mindset, strengthening neural pathways etc), which I am so not qualified to go into, but for this challenge I simply invite you to join me and give it a try. 1. Try to prize yourself, or someone in your life, daily then post about it here - what you did, and what kind of person that makes you. 2. Prize other people in this thread for their achievements 3. Prize people all over Nerd Fitness; see how many people you can get on board. Instead of saying only "Great job finishing that race", try "You are a reliable person because you followed through on your commitment to race; you are consistent, you trained every week. You rock!" That's it! Hope to see you here during the challenge!
  21. Where to begin? I'll start by saying I am a 24 year-old Canadian girl. I'm 5'3", weighing ????? pounds (I'll get to that later), looking to really commit to getting my butt in shape!! Literally and figuratively speaking. I need to go back a bit to explain. A long time ago, in a city far far away.... For the longest time I was kept in decent shape by a physically demanding job, but then I was promoted to an office job. A financial "Yay!" but a physical "Oh no". I quickly went from weighing about 115lbs to 150lbs. Ouch. Over and over again I told myself I would get in shape, but I could never commit. Until about a couple months ago. I am doing great! I'm really trying to stick to mostly healthy eating as well as working out most days of the week. It also helped that I STOPPED weighing myself! I have no idea what I weigh right now and it's incredibly liberating. I realize that the scale is what made me stop every other time. Since your weight doesn't properly reflect how well you're doing, it was always a disappointment and very discouraging. Now that I am more determined than ever, I NEED SOME HELP. I need anything I can get ESPECIALLY support. Unfortunately my friends, and fiance, are all gaming nerds with 0 interest in being healthy, so I am on my own here. I'll tell you where I am at right now: Every Sunday and Thursday I take a 1 hour Iyengar yoga class (cutting back to one soon for financial reasons). 1-2 times a week I go to the gym with for 1-2 hours, usually focusing on either my arms or my legs (mostly machine-work for my legs). At home I switch it up quite a bit. From running on my treadmill for 20 minutes or so (attempting HIIT training), or doing awesome and short Youtube "Blogilate" workouts. As far as food goes, I am REALLY trying to eat healthy. Overeating is my weakness...and cheese...mmm...cheese (I'm never giving that up though). It's tough to find time to prep and cook dinner every night (if I don't cook, it's pizza or KD for dinner), So I'm also looking for great, healthy recipes that I can prep ahead of time, use the slow cooker and/or freeze. I also need some MAJOR support here. It's incredibly hard to eat healthy and properly living with someone that is determined to eat and buy junk all the time, as well as argues with me about what is good food and what is not. This also causes a lot of food to go to waste. If I don't eat fresh food right away, it's garbage. Did I also mention that I love playing video and computer games?!? It's true. So far I'm proud of myself for staying away from a new WoW subscription. Although I could probably resist the temptation on my own, it's nearly impossible with a certain someone I care about, begging, bribing, and reasoning with me to join him in doing some LFR (as in al of them) dungeons, daily quests etc. I also have incredibly low self-esteem. I need to stay positive and I just need someone to keep me on track! Someone I can talk to on a regular basis about healthy eating, new techniques and overall encouragement...and you know, I can also be won over with talks about Fantasy novels (esp. WoT...I have a Moiraine costume), Star Wars, Firefly, WoW, Diablo, and you know, general awesome things like that. Help me Rebels, You're my only hope!

  23. Okay. A bit of backstory: For this past six week challenge (currently in week 5) I have been participating in a program run in a gym not quite near me, but close enough to get to on public transport (I don't have a car.) The program is designed for people to be able to lose 9 kilograms (almost 20 pounds) in 6 weeks, and it coincidentally lined up with the six week challenge here on Nerd Fitness. I've been doing really well on the challenge. I've been following the prescribed nutrition plan and going to the required five fitness classes per week. I've even been going more than required because I want to get as much as I can out of the program and I know I may not be financially able to stay on at the gym after the program finishes. I'm really enjoying the classes and working out, but more than that is the community aspect. There is a facebook page for the gym that's limited to people who still go there and it's really active. It's really easy to strike up conversations with people because so many of them are on the same journey, and the nutrition plan is pretty easy to follow because there is so much support, meal prepping advice and ideas for what to eat up on the website and the facebook page. So with all of this support, why wouldn't I continue with this awesome gym and these awesome people? The number one reason is finances. I'm a student and I'm struggling a little at the moment. I'm trying to save to go overseas next year, because I feel stuck in my hometown and I want adventure and to see a whole new world. (Part of that plan also includes going to Camp Nerd Fitness!) Rent is going up in December and although I have a job, and I'm contracted to certain hours which means I do have enough to pay rent and bills and eat and go to the gym, I would have to rearrange some things to continue on with this gym. I would probably only continue on for six months, as there's a program in place for post 9in6 program goers and this includes a kind of discount, and I think I could afford it for that amount of time. The only other thing is with my boyfriend. With this intense course, uni and my job, it's been really hard to find time for us to hang out. I really want for us to have a healthy relationship, but this is eating into it and I don't know how much more it will bite into my time. I want to take care of my health and fitness, but I also love my boyfriend. He's been super supportive of me so far, but he's definitely interested in having more time for us to hang out and spend time together. I know that once uni's over I'll have a bit more time on my hands, but Christmas is coming up too and I'm just not quite sure what to do. Any advice people can give would be super helpful. Even writing it all out like this really helped. Cheers.
