  1. Hello! My name is Tyr Prys, currently I am a senior college student/research assistant who specializes in medical criminology. However, that is not why I am here today. Last month, my mother passed away due to complications of her health at the age of 57. I was currently on the path along the same road at weighing about 290 lbs and being 5'5. I often wanted to use my school work as an excuse to stress eat, ignore my friends and my family. Around 2005, I began playing World of Warcraft and I had a human warrior. There's nothing like staying up until 5AM raiding/questing/leveling/grinding just to wake up at 6AM and binge on soda and fried chicken (no Leeroy pun intended). As of 1/14/15 however, I want to change my life. I spent the last 10 years (or so) trying to level up an in-game character while almost killing myself in the process. So, therefore I say unto you al, this is my "Epic Quest of Awesome". Main Quest: To lose 50 lbs by Mid-March. Sub-Quest 1: Adopt a primarily paleo diet (bagels+dairy as I have a deficiencies and this is at the rec. of my doctor) in 30 Days Sub-Quest 2: On class days, workout at the Rec center on campus for 45 minutes before class doing bike/treadmill/eliptical. Sub-Quest 3: Learn how to meditate and adopt stress management skills. Side Quest: Manage the finances better and keep the house clean. Master Quest: Present my research successfully to local legislation at my conference this February. Motivations: to become a better person mentally, physically, and emotionally; to be a happier person; to stop taking medicines that have side effects which are sometimes worse than the actual problem that I'm taking them for Thank you all, I shall see you on the front lines. To the Monks of the Monastery, it is one day my hope to join you all. Tyr Prys, Level 0 Lycan Recruit.
  2. Hello everyone! This is my first challenge. I live and work in a number of places across the country and each time I get myself into an exercise routine, I promptly fall out of it again either after losing steam or I move on to a new routine. For the next six weeks though I am on holiday and I hope to get into the habit that I can't break my fitness routine when I move. I am generally a healthy person at the top end of my healthy weight range with a good diet, flexibility, etc. but I have pretty much zero upper body strength which limits me quite a bit. I have also been hindered in the past by injuries, so I want to be mindful of how my body feels. Main Quest: To do one full military (tricep) pushup. Quest 1: Do 3x full body strength workouts a week in support of my main quest. Already started! Quest 2: Build up my running stamina by run/walking 3-6x a week and slowly buidling up my pace. I am recovering from severe shin splints so I need to take it slow. I have been doing this for 3 weeks already and have worked up to about 15 minutes a run/walking injury free. Quest 3: Stick to proper portions. I love to cook so I am already making lots of foods from whole ingredients. I focus on healthy fats, lean proteins, and lots of vegetables. I am not paleo, but paleo inspired and still eat whole grains and dairy every day. For now though if I want seconds I want to wait ten minutes and then reevaluate. I find even though I eat fairly healthy, I still overeat! Life Quest: Get out of bed every morning and meditate 10-15mins...and get to bed early! My husband and I have been doing this most days during the week. I find it is not hard to do if we get to bed on time and I would like to make this a regular (at least 5 days a week) habit. Motivation: I am tired of excuses and tired of being on this roller coaster of fit/unfit/injured. I know that if I could just achieve a baseline level of strength (which right now would be by being able to do a proper push up....something I've NEVER been able to do) I could really start leveling up my life and feeling better. I've been coasting so far....I've never been overweight, I follow a fairly healthy diet, and I look good and feel okay, but I know this level of fitness won't carry me into old age....and it won't help me fighting off stormtroopers, or ninjas, or anything else either. Thanks everyone! At the end of the challenge, I want to be able to say I have been consistently making strength and fitness my priority!
  3. Hello fellow Nerds, This is my first challenge with the rebellion and I am excited. I am 24 and I got my B.S. in aerospace engineering at UC Davis last year in June. Since then I fell into a depression from the long arduous job search with multiple rejections. In the mean time I decided to get an online B.S. in computer science to give me something to do. i gained about 60 pounds during my depression from eating out too much and sitting at a computer writing code all day or gaming. The good news is I recently landed my dream job working for NASA and I feel so much better emotionally. Now I want to get back to feeling better physically. I love RPGs and I thought I would give this challenge a shot. I have already started eating less and have stopped drinking sodas and stick to water most of the time. My confidence is slowly coming back and I am ready to level up my life! Main Quest: To lose 60 pounds Quest 1: 3 NF Beginner Body Weight workouts each week Quest 2: 3 walking/running workouts at the track near my house Quest 3: Cook my own healthier meals each day and only go out to eat twice. Life Side-Quest: I would like to spend 15 minutes every day in meditation mode to clear my mind and de-stress. I have 8 classes to go on my CS degree and now with a full time job I have considerably less free time so I need to make meditation a priority. I found a great app called headspace to help me with this! Motivation: Most of the adults in my family are overweight and inactive. I do not want to have the same health problems as them. I want to be able to go hiking with my fit friends and not have physical limitations. I also want to get my private pilot's license next September and weight is a big factor when it comes to flying. Other than losing weight I would enjoy building muscle and endurance but one step at a time. Thank you everyone for reading, and I know its a bit late but I am going to push ahead anyway rather than make the excuse of waiting for the next challenge.
  4. Hey everybody, Captain Coleslaw here. I'm new to posting, but I've followed the Rebellion for several years now. Why start posting now? Well...I need some battle buddies I guess. And this is the first time I've felt like I needed a community. Here's my story in bullet points: • high school: athletic, fat, but strong. Played football, lifted weights, began professional wrestling career. • college: worked out 2-4 times a week, didn't really get fat during college, but didn't get any skinnier. Still wrestled until 2005, the year I "retired" • 2006-2010: I started gaining weight. Fluctuated from 225-235lbs, still working out but not as much. • 2011: hurt my shoulder (full story: high school weightlifting incident plus working at a factory during summers contributed) moving a dresser. • 2012: started jiu jitsu. Loved it. Got down to sub-220lbs. Won a gold medal at my first tournament. Also during a match I did not submit to a kimura. Bad news for the shoulder. I still trained on it but I no longer could put pressure on it. I gave up jiu jitsu because of it. Went to physical therapy, may have helped some. In November, bum shoulder and all I competed in and finished my first ever Spartan Race. • 2013-2014: figured I would lift even with a bad shoulder. Not smart. • Summer 2014: had a MRI done on my shoulder. Torn labrum. Surgery in October. • Now: 249lbs. Shoulder still aches but is better than it was. So, here I am. My breaking point was reading a blog by Timothy Ferris's. It was basically from his book "The 4 Hour Body". http://fourhourworkweek.com/2012/07/12/how-to-lose-100-pounds/(sorry if links aren't allowed) It just made sense to me. Then I got the actual book, and it talked about getting friends to do it, too, or using a fitness forum. Not having many close friends where I am, I thought it'd be the perfect time to throw myself in to the Rebellion. So here I am, reporting for duty. Starting stats - Measurements: Waist (W): 48" Hips (H): 43" Right Bicep (RB): 17.5" Left Bicep (LB): 18" Right Thigh (RT): 26" Left Thigh (LT): 26" Total: 178.5" Weight: 249lbs
  5. I'm CCCatFL - it's all new to me here. But I think I've found my people. Here's the back story: 1. Had shoulder surgery on March 30 - everything's changed (abilitity to exercise, work, type, wipe (yep it's my dominat hand!) I fatigue mid-step like a wind-up toy that runs out of rubberband. 2. If my typing has misspells, oh well, see #1 above. 3. Initial Main Quest and Missions will be modest but I'm ok with that -learning to be gentle with myself is an unspoken part of my Mission (signing up and posting this makes me feel like I'm a winner already as I've been reading this site since December.) MAIN QUEST: Rehab shoulder to 50% or better while dropping 10 lbs would be lovely. Mission/Goal #1: Walk 10 minutes or more daily. Work abs/lower body 3x/week (don't know what I can do as of now) Mission/Goal #2: Eat 1500 cal/daily Drink 8/8 oz water daily Mission/Goal #3: Get minimum7 hours sleep per night SIDE QUEST: Complete Photoreading course - because I want to be a faster reader. MOTIVATION: I want to know what it feels like to win.
  6. Hi there ! I'm french, 18years old and i'm planning to be a doctor (first year in college). I've always loved sport but until four years ago, i was really skinny. So when i entered high school, i started strenght training. I'll always remember that afternoon and my 15 poor form push ups like the beginning of... the construction of a new body at least, and maybe the beginning of a new process that would carry me during my whole life : health care, for me and for others. After 2 years of training without any knowledge i started looking for informations about training. Starting with "la méthode lafay" well known in france. Then, I read quite a lot now about musculation, calisthenics, streatching and nutrition, and i sometime read some yoga or martial arts articles. Here appear a wild nerdfitness. So where am i right now ? I use, for the most parts of my training, exercices from "convict conditionning" and fitness blender. I also run a bit (trying minimalist) and every time i can bike, swim or play any sports with my friends i do. But i lack time because of my studies (we all have good reasons for that i guess !). I train 6 days a week for about an hour and i eat as much as i can, i don't know anyone eating more than me, and i'm still 136pound for 5.6 feet. My goal are getting the planche, the handstand, and maybe get the 6 big moves of convict conditionning. So, after fitness we've nerd i guess ! So i love video games (mostly league of legends and the elder scrolls), every thing that approach fantasy (if you' re interested you should seek durzo blint on google you might understand what assassins mean). So i'm here to join the rebellion, help those i can, get as much advices as possible from you guy and maybe share good sweat in the 6 week challenge (don't know exactly what it is yet but i'll discover it quickly !). And by the way i'm a vampire assassin !!
