  1. Hey all, I've seen another thread regarding the Marcy PM3800 Pro power rack, but haven't received a response, so I was hoping to ask it here and also another question about it. I've heard Marcy/Impex is a junk brand, but I've also heard that if you're on budget and want some good bang for your buck, that this bench is actually an exception to the M/I quality rumors. This rack would be the Marcy/Impex PM3800 Pro Power Rack. I just sold my smith machine tonight as I'm done with that and want to get the most out of my free weights as I can. So I was in the market for a power rack and came across the PM3800 which seems to fit my budget, house, and needs best. I consider myself beginner/intermediate lifter. I know how and why to maintain form, eat, and have a pretty solid routine down both in and out of hockey season. My ceiling is 89" high and I know the advertised height of the rack is 84". That being said, I've tested on my old rack that I need the Pullup bar to be a maximum of 81" high. I've asked around different vendors and warehouses if they could measure it for me. I've gotten ranging answers from 80" to 85". That doesn't help much since 80 and 81 will work for me, but anything over 82 and I'll be knocking my melon on the ceiling. So my 2 questions. First, does anyone own this bench and able to tell me what the dimension from the bottom of the rack to the top of the round part of the pull up bar is? Hopefully someone who knows how to operate a tape measure. Second, If it is truly 84", I was thinking of just lowering that bar. I would have to lower it a maximum of 3", which I don't think would mess with the integrity of the rack system. I'd simply measure the factory holes diameters, then drill 4 new ones on each upright a couple inches lower to aid in lowering the pull up bar. Picture below for illustration. Does anyone see any problems with doing this or have done in the past? It's not like I'll be moving the bar a foot down, at most it'll be 3", but it could just be 1" to get the pull up rounds to the height I need. I should also say that I'll likely never have those top pegs up that high cause I'm pretty short so for squats I'll be able to snatch the bar pretty low.
  2. Hopefully this is the right area to post this. This was posted yesterday by "Buff Dudes" on their YouTube channel. It is a pretty good how to video on making your own power rack at home. It can be completed in a day and uses only basic hand and power tools. Materials cost is about $200 and will support around 400lbs on a barbell. They will be adding more DIY how to videos including a bench for presses and possibly more. If i had a basement or a room with space, I would be doing this project. POWER RACK MATERIALS NEEDED: 8 - 8 Foot 4x4 Douglas Fir or Equivalent Wood 8 - 3x5 Flat Steel Ties (Simpson's Strong Tie TP 5) 14 - 1/2x2x2 3/4 90 Degree Steel Ties (Simpson's Strong Tie A23) 1 Pound of 2 inch Star Bit Wood Screws 1/2 Pound of 3 inch Star Bit Wood Screws 1 - 1/8 inch Drill Bit For Pilot Holes 1 - 1 1/8 inch Tri Fluted Wood Boring Bit 3/4 INCH PIPE LIST: Racking Pins- 2 - Chair Flanges 2 - 1 1/2 Inch Pipes 2 - Pipe Connectors 2 - 4 1/2 Inch Pipes 2 - Caps Safety bars: 2 - 60 Inch Pipes 2 - 4 Inch Pipes 2 - 90 Degree Elbows 2 - Caps Pull Up Bar: 1 - 60 Inch Pipe 2 - Caps
  3. Looking to get a power rack for the home gym. Mainly for squats, bench press and overhead press. Looking at the Marcy PM-3800, but seems like most elitist mucleheads poo-poo it as consumer grade garbage. I think it would be fine for me as I'll never put more than 3-400lbs on it. It also has the benefit of dip bars, pull-up bars, and included bench. Can be had online for $390 no shipping or tax. Can I do better for $400 or less delivered? Thanks!
