  1. Hey all. I'm thinking about grabbing a TEFL certification and going overseas to teach English for a while to see what it's like living abroad, absorb some culture and new languages, and have some adventure. I'm thinking about starting with South Korea because it offers the best opportunity to save money while teaching. Then using that to springboard into teaching in Spain. I'm mostly interested in Spain because I also want to study Flamenco guitar. And who knows where from there. I'm also thinking about Slovenia for a bit because that's my family heritage and the country looks beautiful. I just thought I'd throw this out there to see if any body has any experience with: 1) TEFL certification 2) Living, teaching English, and/or travelling in South Korea 3) ... in Japan (an alternative to S. Korea) 4) ... in Spain 5) ... Slovenia 6) Share related experiences with other countries Etc.
  2. I'm creating a new topic because the previous topic was well over a year old and the owner of the thread no longer resides in South Korea. I didn't want to hijack or resurrect a zombie thread. I currently live in Seoul, South Korea and would love to have some friends to help me level up. Whether that's through working out, social meet-ups, or just to know who's kicking around in the ROK. I'm here for the foreseeable future (just got a new contract with my company) and should be in Seoul for quite some time now. If you're interested in meeting up, let me know. I'd love to know who else is around the area.
  3. I will be in S. Korea before the year's end, and just thought I'd throw this out there in the faint hope that maybe there were some NF Rebels who would be there or may join me. So if you are, feel free to PM me and hopefully we can catch a train to meet up someplace!
  4. Hello, I'm Betty Krypton, currently teaching abroad in South Korea and trying to get back on track with my life. The last year has been super hectic, and that has come with a 30+ lb gain and an avalanche of other issues. I've been trying to do too many things at once, and I finally had that moment where I realized I need to take small steps to a better me. My Three Goals the next six weeks: 1. Exercise 5 days a week M-F I will workout as soon as I wake up. That will get me going for the rest of the day and allow me to unwind when I come home after screaming--erm-teaching English to Korean kids all day. 2. Plan out food for the day, then stick to it. I will write up a meal plan each week, then shop according to it, that way there are no unnecessary foods that may derail me. I will also learn to say 'no' to well meaning coworkers and students who try to feed me (it happens more often than I'd like) 3. Get 8 hours of sleep a night. Lastly, I will have a bedtime routine that will begin 30 minutes before I intend to be asleep. That will signal my body to get off the internet, disconnect from everything, and sleep, dammit. I have a stressful job and am also doing my Master's degree, which leads to moments where I zone out, take comfort in food, and pretty much run on zombie mode instead of taking care of myself. I'm also involved in roller derby. In South Korea I'm not as actively involved, but I want to get back into fighting trim for when I return stateside. To be a good player, i need to have strength, flexibility, and endurance. I love doing violent things (My favorite fighting game series is Guilty Gear), quite honestly, so Roller Derby, Kickboxing, and other forms of athletic violence make me happy. I hope that I can get positive support as I shift gears and start being Betty Krypton, menace of the track and all star on 8 wheels. P.S. This is my first time-erm-challenge. I'm a little nervous.
  5. Hello everyone ! As one of my goals I want to visit South Korea "SOMEDAY" (within the next 3 years !!!). My plan is to either go on vacation (but as a student I don´t have THAT much money I guess ^^) or absolve my future Master-thesis (I think it will be something around plastics, engineering-wise or natural science-wise). So now I need advise. From April to September I will do my bachelor-related practical semester in Belgium (Diepenbeek ... HELLO MAYBE SOME OF YOU COME FROM AROUND HASSELT OR DIEPENBEEK ! ) so I will be kind of "used to" being abroad. But I think going to a country like South Korea will be kind of strange or difficult because of the incredibly different culture (is it THAT different ?) or *way of life*. O.K. I´m talking so much ..... What I actually wanted to know is if there are some of you that actually live or lived (maybe as exchange student or something ?) in South Korea to get in contact with so I can wreck your nerves with annoying questions (^^) or even learn some basic Korean language. (if there´s the time and if you just want to of course) Then: If someone had the same idea as me, what problems did you kinda have ? (like with visa and/or money [i.e. how much did it cost and so on]) and is there like a "specific" area that I should go to (like Seoul or Incheon or or or....) just to say: Even if I will be kinda working there (when I travel for the Masters-Thesis) I´d like to not just move to the "most western part or area" to not feel homesick or anything. When I go abroad I want to get to know the foreign culture and the food and anything possible to soak up. So .. yeah I hope this thread kind of belongs to this forum ^^ Hope there is someone or someone who knows someone (if not it´s not that bad either, then I just have to find out for myself) Have an awesome day everyone !!! NOTE: I will update this thread every time I get to know something more specific about "how and when I´m going to really really go to South Korea" or if anything interesting happens or smth. that others would maybe like to know as well.
