Starfleet Gonna Ranger: The Star Trek Themed Ranger Mini Challenge

Recommended Posts

Welcome aboard the U.S.S. Ranger, the finest Excelsior Class Starship in the fleet.

exkZMo6YTm26xxkmC1-i3sONu_yAVXV4hEZKJqQo

On behalf of the command staff, welcome. I’m your new Captain, Tanktimus, with me are your first Officer Commander DarK_Raider, second officer and operations officer Lt.Cdr Rurik Harragath, Chief Medical Officer Doctor (Cdr.) Darkfoxx, Chief of Security Lt. mr_willes, Chief Engineer L.Cdr Raxie, Helm Officer Lt. Xena, QuarterMaster Lt. RES, Science Officer Lt. Cdr Elastigirl, and Ship’s Counselor Lt. Cdr T2sarahconner.

This will be your first training cruise since joining the academy, and our goal is to get you as much training as possible in the four weeks we have you. Be sure to sign in on the spreadsheet letting us know your home planet and species. (For simplicity sakes your character name will be your NF username. Home planet and species are optional, as they only apply to roleplaying, the mini is open to all rebels regardless of guild) You will be sorted into squads at the end of zero week. From within your squads a leader will be selected. Each week a squad will be assigned to a specific department, Medical, Engineering, Security or Navigation. Your progress and performance in each section will be recorded, and as results come in your performance for the week will be compared to other squads performances in the following weeks. At the end of the cruise the top ranking squad will be announced.  (In order not to clutter up the Ranger Forum with extra threads, please don’t start any extra threads for your squad.)

When assigned to the Medical section you will be focusing on recovery from your workouts. We will be counting Yoga as active recovery, so you will be scored on minutes of Yoga performed throughout the week. It doesn’t matter if this is part of your normal routine or something you add in just for the mini, every minute of Yoga performed is a minute of Yoga on the spreadsheet. The first squad assigned to medical will put their results in week 1, the second squat in week two, and so on. Dr. Darkfoxx will be taking care of you during your time in Sickbay. (If you have any questions during your week in Sickbay, ask them here in the general thread and the Darkfoxx or one of the Guild leaders will answer).

When assigned to the Engineering section you will be focusing on bodyweight reps. If you’re not using weights and it can be counted as reps, it counts for the challenge. If you’re using weight, it doesn’t count. It gets too complicated trying to figure out how many points a 100lb back squat should be compared to a body-weight squat. If something is counted in time, like planks, they don’t count for the challenge, again for simplicity’s sake. Raxie is our chief engineer, she’ll be taking care of you while you’re in the Engine Room.

When assigned to Navigation you’ll be working with our Helm Officer Lt. Xena. You’ll be tracking miles this week. It doesn’t matter what you do, if it’s trackable in distance, convert it to miles and add it to the sheet. Don’t round up or down, include two decimals if you are entering anything other than complete miles. Again, it doesn’t make a difference if this is part of your normal routine or something you do just for the mini, count it.

When assigned to security you’ll be working with our head of security Lt. mr_willes. Preparation for combat is going to be your focus while at tactical. For the spreadsheet track number of reps on punches, kicks, or any other combat drill (sword strikes, etc).

This is going to be a great four weeks. You are in good hands, we expect you to work hard, work as teams, and learn a lot.

Captain’s Log

Stardate: 95218.16

We have onboarded our cadets and have sorted them into squads. They’ll be given their first assignments this week, which will be spent traveling to our destination of Archalleus III. There the cadets will be given the chance to experience away missions and learn about operations on and off a Starship.

"Alright Cadets, you've been sorted into squads, check out the Roster for your assignments. Squad leaders, introduce yourself here in this thread. You will be leading your squad, giving encouragement and helping your squadmates do their best each week. We'll be travelling most of the week to get to our destination, where you'll get a chance to experience some away missions. It gets real out here in space, no more simulations, we have to rely on each other in order for a starship to function properly. We need each of you doing your best if this mission is going to succeed. Stay on the bridge to watch us get underway, then you'll report to your training assignments for the first week. Alpha Squad, report to Lt. Cdr Raxie in Engineering. Bravo Squad, report to Lt. Mr_Willes in Security. Charlie Squad, report to Lt. Xena at the Helm for Navigation training, Delta Squad, report to Sick Bay where Dr. Darkfoxx will take you in hand."

With that, the Captain turns in his chair. "Prepare for departure. Clear all moorings and button up."

Lt Xena: All moorings clear, we are under our own power and free to navigate.

Captain: Full reverse on thrusters, take us out of space dock then set course for Archalleus III. Full Impulse till we clear the Solar System then go to Warp 6.

As the ship clears Earth's orbit, the Captain turns to the Cadets, "OK, time to get to work. Dismissed."

This week is travel, acquaint yourself with your shipmates and get those points by completing the tasks that go with your assignment for the week. Let's keep all mini challenge discussion in this thread, we don't want to have a bunch of extra threads. To make things easy, Engineering is bodyweight reps, Security is combat reps, Helm is mileage, and Sick bay is yoga. Check the inital post of this thread for more details. The sheets to log your reps, minutes and miles are part of the same document as the Roster. Command staff, chart your reps off to the side of each sheet under "Command Team." Since we're not competing we can log all four categories each week.

Captain’s Log

Stardate: 95235.26

We are approaching Archalleus III. What was supposed to be a simple supply run to give the cadets a chance to experience life on a Starship may turn out to be more educational than we thought. We have been unable to establish contact with the colony. It may be as simple as malfunctioning communication equipment but the longer we go without hearing from them the less likely it seems. We are going to go ahead and shuffle them to new departments anyway and see what happens when we get to the colony.

In the Captain’s Ready Room, The Captain is addressing the squad leaders:

Captain: Cadets, your squads have done very well and you have done an excellent job leading them. I’m going to leave you in command of your squads. I’ll let the four of you know your assignments for next week and leave it to you to inform the rest of the squad. Rhovaniel, take Alpha Squad and report to Security. Sky, take Bravo Squad to Navigation, Jon, take Charlie Squad to Sickbay, and Sloth, Take Delta Squad to Engineering. Keep up the good work cadets. Dismissed.

2 hours later in a Briefing room large enough to accomodate the assembled cadets and the command Staff the Captain stands to address the crowd.

Captain: I'm sure by now you've heard that our simple supply run is not going to be so simple. We were unable to make contact with the colony until we achieved orbit. Apparently there is some sort of atmospheric interference disrupting communications, sensors, and our ability to transport to the planet. We don't know what's causing it, but the colonists reported that at the same time as the disruption occurred they were attacked by an unidentified force. They have wounded down there, and while there are medical facilities, they have no trained staff to use them. The colonists have done their best on their own, but they need help. In addition, they need repairs to their existing facilities, new defenses to be able to protect themselves, training to use those defenses, and better maps of the surrounding areas to know how to set up those defenses. They are also going to need our people to staff their medical facilities and train them how to take care of themselves. You're going to be helping with all of that. Cdr. DarK_Raider will be leading you down on the planet, I'll turn the breifing over to him.

DarK_Raider: We can't beam directly down to the surface from the ship, but we can take a runabout down to the planet. By using pattern enhancers and the runabouts own transporters we will be able to get the rest of you down to the surface. We'll also have to route all communications between the surface and the ship through the runabout. Shadowlion will be running the link-up between the Runabout and the Ranger. I'll fly down with her, Raxie, Darkfoxx, Xena, and Willes. Once we are down, we'll rig the transport system to bring you down. Bravo Squad, you'll be working with Lt. Xena to map out the surrounding area. Shipbound sensors are useless with the atmospheric interference, but tricorders will work down there. The down side is you'll have to manually carry them over the surface to map things out. Delta Squad, you'll be working with Lt. Cdr. Raxie to repair the damages they received

Rurik: While you're down there, Lt. Cdr. Elastigirl and I will be up here figuring out what caused the interference and working on clearing it up. Lt RES will be sending down supplies to make sure you have what you need down there. The Runabout's replicator won't be working due to power diverting to the transporter and communications, and even if it were it wouldn't be able to keep all of you fed. Looks like you'll be on combat rations for a while.

Good luck this week, you have your assignments and the spreadsheet will be updated. You're all tied for first place right now, we won't have rankings change till after the results from this week are in.

Week 3

Captain’s Log

Stardate: 95252.83

Using the deflector dish, Elastigirl and Rurik were able to overcome the interference caused by the gravimetric neutrinos by flooding it with oppositely charged gravimetric neutrinos. I’m told the view from the surface during the procedure was spectacular. We now have full resolution scanning capability of the atmosphere and surface of the planet, communications have been restored, defenses were built and all the wounded colonists have been healed and put back on their feet. The colonists now have functioning shield generators, planetary phasers, and the ability to counteract the atmospheric interference. We have also been able to recover sensor logs from the planet. Analysis shows a ship entered orbit right before the atmospheric disturbance and surface attack. While planetary operations were ongoing probes were launched into the system to find the ship’s propulsion signature. As we began bringing the cadets back on board word came in from Starfleet Command that we are to locate the ship and investigate further. Our primary mission is to protect civilians in the area, then identify the attackers and if possible make peaceful contact. I’m confident in our ability to find them, our ability to make peaceful contact will depend entirely on them. As soon as the runabout returns we will be underway.

Later, in the Captain’s ready room, the Captain is addressing the squad leaders.

Once again you’ve all performed very well. You four in particular have done a fine job leading your squads. You got more than you bargained for and were up to the task. Now we have a new mission. We are going to track down this mystery ship and see what is going on. We may have to go into combat, we may have to talk our way through this. In any case, Starfleet, the Academy, and I all feel you are capable of handling this or they would have sent another ship. You’re also going to rotate as you would normally. Firestar, take Charlie squad down to Engineering and get with Lt. Cdr Raxie. We’re going to need the engines at full capacity, we have no idea how fast that ship is. Sloth, take Delta Squad to security, Lt. Willes will meet you there. Make sure your people are ready for the ship to ship weapons and to repel intruders. Rhovaniel, take your squad and meet Xena in Stellar Cartography to go over the data from the probes. We need to know where that ship is and where it came from. Elvenword, take Bravo Squad down to sickbay and get with Doctor Darkfoxx. If we go into combat we may have wounded to deal with. Dismissed.

Ensign Elennare reporting for duty!

I have a question about Navigation.  Is there a way to record an activity that could be tracked in miles, but due to the way it's done, that's not especially feasible?  Asking about roller derby practice.  Lots of roller skating, but my activity tracker obviously isn't accurate, and I"m not counting laps around the rink when I'm practicing.

If not, that's ok.  I'm planning to actually go run this challenge anyway, it would just be nice to be able to count my skating, too.
